67th Anniversary of the Republic Day Celebrated in Sahyadri

The 67th anniversary of the Republic Day was celebrated in the Campus with the hoisting of the national flag by K. Kishore Alva, Executive Director, Project Development & Corporate Affairs, ADANI, Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. His professional experience spans more than 23 years, working with various industrial organizations / MNCs. Having completed his schooling from the National Public School, Bangalore, he went on to obtain a BA Honors/ MA Honors from St. Aloysius College / Mangalore University. He is a keen sportsman/University athlete who represented Mangalore University, served as President of Students Council of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore University and is the President of Post Graduate Students Council, Mangalore University, Konaje and All College Students Union for Mangalore / Dakshina Kannada & Coorg Districts, comprising of Mangalore University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Visvesvaraya Technological University.

Kishore Alva, spoke about how the constitution of India was framed and how India became a republic country. He spoke about the importance of the day and remembered all the freedom fighters. He added that the students must inculcate leadership qualities because a good student is a good citizen, a good citizen makes a good society and a good society will develop into a good nation. In his address to the gathered students, teaching and non-teaching staff and the management he said that a student is just like a good seed which grows into a good tree and a good tree will always yield good fruit and that students who are hardworking have always been successful in life.

He thanked the management for having invited him to the anniversary celebrations of the 67th Republic Day and wished each and everyone all the best in the future.

The formal flag hoisting came to an end with the recitation of Bankim Chandra’s, “Vande Mataram.” It was followed by the Staff Sports Day organized by the Department of Physical Education.

Rajashekar Hiremath, President, Flexitron Visits Sahyadri

Rajashekar Hiremath, President, Flexitron, visited Sahyadri and had a fruitful interaction with the students on social innovation. He gave insights on what is social innovation and how a social enterprise can arise. He also produced some of his own case studies on how to solve a social problem by make the society better. He also appreciated Sahyadri for the kind of support and freedom it has given to the faculties and students to innovate and learn.

Flexitron is dedicated to design, manufacture frugal innovations of products in alternative energy, aids and appliances for the physically challenged and products for use by the poorest at the bottom of the human pyramid.

Rajashekar Hiremath has over 300 plus innovations in varied fields like solar photovoltaic’s, wind energy, led lighting, empowerment equipments for the rural population, textiles, khadi, ceramics, disability aids, silk , artisan equipment and tools . He has extensive ‘hands on’ experience of over 30 years in design, development and production of aids, appliances and systems for ‘Barrier Free Access’ of the challenged population and geriatric persons. He has been conferred with four National Awards by the Government of India in the field of innovation. Of the four awards three awards are for the best innovations for the physically challenged.

The VTU results of Semester V of MCA saw an impressive percentage score in the recently held examinations in December 2015-16. Sumithra V Bhandarkar P was ranked the highest in the College with 79.90%, followed by Priya with 79.33% and Devadiga Mahesh Nagesh with 78.38%. Out of forty students who took the VTU examination, twenty-six obtained a distinction and ten students a first class, bringing the overall percentage score to 90%.

Students Undergo Internship at Various Companies

Nithin B, Akhil Menon, Jithesh Shetty and Gerald K, Semester V, Department of Electronics & Communication have successfully undergone a ten-day internship at M/s Smartlink Network Systems Limited based in Goa. The internship was facilitated by Prof. Ashwath Rao, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. The students were given hands-on training on different electronic devices. They tested, configured and diagnosed devices such as motherboards, modems, Wi-Fi routers, switches and closed circuit cameras.

Thirty-six students of Semester VI of the departments of Computer Science and Information Science Engineering attended an internship programme under the reference of Prof. Jinto Thomas, Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Prof. Rithesh Pakkala, Department of Information Science & Engineering held at DJIT Soft, PIO Mall, Kodialbail, Mangaluru. The four-week internship had two weeks of training and two weeks of project work. The training programme comprised basics of HTML, JavaScript and PHP. Prof. Sudheer Shetty, HOD, Department of Computer Science & Engineering was the chief guest at the valedictory function to mark the close of the internship programme.

All the Electronics & Communication Engineering students of third and fifth semesters attended a three-week BSNL internship at BSNL, Main office, Pandeshwar, Mangaluru. During the internship students received practical hands-on experience on devices used for Optical Fiber Communication, Digital Switching, Mobile Communication etc. Students also got an opportunity to visit BSNL work station and interact with officers working in the field. This internship was coordinated by Prof. Prasanna Kumar, Prof. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, and all the faculty members of Electronics & Communication Engineering Department under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Jose Alex, HoD, of Electronics & Communication Engineering.

Deeksha Bhandari recently had a round table meeting with Sri T.B. Jayachandra, Cabinet Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs, Higher Education, Govt. of Karnataka, and Mr. Bharat Lal Meena, Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Education Department (Higher Education), along with

Mr. Priyank Kharge, M.L.A Chittapur and Mr. Mike Nithavrianakis (Health care specialist, U.K. for India, Middle East and North Africa).

Director’s Daughter Pavithra Prabhakar Receives $446,000 CAREER Award at Kansas State University

Pavithra Prabhakar, assistant professor of computing and information sciences, has received a five-year $446,000 CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, USA, for her project "Robust Verification of Cyber-Physical Systems” to develop better transportation, health care and energy systems. She is the daughter of Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Prabhakar's main research interests include the formal analysis of cyber-physical systems, with emphasis on both theoretical and practical methods for verification and synthesis of hybrid control systems. She has served on the program committees of several conferences in the field of hybrid systems and formal verification as well as chaired several workshops and seminars. She also has received the Marie Curie Career Integration Grant from the European Union. Know more…

Members of DTlabz on Industrial Visit

Thirteen student members of DTlabz; part of the startup company Sahyadri Edu DREAMERS R&D Pvt. Ltd. visited the Biofuel Park, Hassan and Textiles Park, BIET Campus, Davangere. The intention of the company was to provide exposure to students on social innovation; one of the benefits that students receive on becoming members in the startup.

John Nikhil, Technical Trainer and Shreya M, P.R.O assisted students in the visit.

At the BioFuel Park, Hassan, theoretical and practical sessions on the production of biofuel were organized. Students witnessed demonstrations of various KSCST funded projects at Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET) and how rice bags are being manufactured at the Textiles Park, Davangere.

Dr. Vrushabendhrappa, Director, BIET was impressed by the initiatives taken by Sahyadri as well as DTlabz to bring in an innovative culture amongst students.

Global Automation Pool Campus Recruitment Drive

Global Automation conducted an online test for recruitment in the campus. 143 students of final year engineering, MCA, MBA and M.Com. of pool colleges participated in the drive. 9 students from Engineering and 11 students from MBA have been shortlisted for the next round.

Online Certification Programme by NPTEL

VTU e-learning Centre, Mysuru has set up VTU-NPTEL Local Chapter. The main objective of this Chapter is to introduce the initiatives of NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning).

NPTEL has launched the certification programmes scheduled to commence during January 2016. Courses are available in various disciplines for enrollment of staff and students of the College. Enrollment and learning from these courses are free!
