68th Anniversary of the Republic Day Celebrated in Sahyadri

The 68th anniversary of the Republic Day was celebrated in the Campus with the hoisting of the national flag by Mr. Shrinivas Bhat, Senior Manager, Human Resources, Diya Systems, Business Value Contributor, Glow Touch Technologies, Mangaluru. He has 17+ years’ of rich experience in delivering optimal results and business value in high-growth environment in the areas of Recruitment, Human Resources Management, Compensation & Benefits, Leadership development and Performance management.

Mr. Shrinivas was humbly delighted to be part of the auspicious day. He started his speech by giving a brief history about the evolution of the Indian National Flag and how it brought about unity under the umbrella of one flag. He said that there were several flag which were designed in various periods’ post 1916 but the national flag which gained the most acceptances came into force in 1947 which has its own prominence and relevance. He also quoted that he is extremely delighted and proud of the fact that Karnataka is the only state in the country that has all the three units which supplies the material required for the National Flag.

He thanked the management for having invited him to the anniversary celebrations of the 68th Republic Day and wished each and everyone all the best in the future.

The formal flag hoisting came to an end with the recitation of Bankim Chandra’s, “Vande Mataram.” It was followed by Staff Sports Day organized by the Department of Physical Education.

Aerophilia – 2017, A National Level AeroModelling Event & Air-Show

Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management has taken the initiative to widen the innovative prospects in the field of aeronautics. Aerophilia 2017, a national level AeroModelling competition organized by Team Challengers was scheduled to be held on the 27th and 28th of January, 2017. This is the second time Team Challengers is organizing such an event. Aerophilia was initiated in 2016. Though, in the beginning the team had less number of participants, the response that they received was way beyond their expectations. With this driving force, Aerophilia - 2017 was organized on a massive scale.

The inaugural ceremony was adorned with the presence of Chief Guest - Mr. J T Radhakrishna, Director, Mangalore International Airport along with eminent delegates from various disciplines - Prof. B.R Kulkarni (Flight lieutenant Professor who is currently working in Goa Engineering college), Mr. Rajanikanth Shashtri (A former Intel Manager graduated from IIT Bombay, working at Software solution provider for FAB Labs in USA), Prof. B.N Karkera (A scientist from BARC who is a director at KGRCS, Sahyadri), Mr. M R Vasudeva (A former director in Mangalore International Airport), Ms. Padmavathi (Scientist/Engineer at Aeronautical Development Agency, Bengaluru), Dr. M S Bhatt (Former distinguished scientist VSSE, ISRO and Adjunct faculty, NITK, Suratkal).

The inaugural ceremony was carried out by launching the aircraft giving throttle. During the inaugural address, Mr. J T Radhakrishna emphasized on the complexities in aeronautical field. This was followed by AeroModelling and Drone race which was a major part of the event. This competition comprised of 2 rounds wherein the first round was conducted today. The competition was evaluated on the basis of certain tasks that the participants had to successfully complete in order to qualify for the second round. By the end of the morning session, there were 11 participants who had competed in the first round of their initial attempt. In case of Drone race, 5 participants competed in their first round out of which 2 teams qualified for the second round. Mr. Naveil Rodrigues and Mr. Ragavendra kept the crowd engaged with their mesmerized talks and stunts. P.C Pant, Wing Commander of the Indian Air Force addressed the gathering wherein he enlightened the young minds with the opportunities in Aviation industry for engineers and spoke about different ways by which they can pursue their dreams and aspirations in aviation. Air-Show, the major highlight of the event was performed by Mr. Abdullah Ghasem Salehnezhad Moarafi, A UAE resident and an employee at Dubai customs along with Mr. Essa Saeed Essa Binaynouh, an employee of Dubai Police.

Afternoon session of the Day One included Skype technical talk by Dr. Parimal Kopardekhar, Senior Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. The talk was attended by delegates and students from High school to Engineering level. Mr. Parimal spoke on the topic “Unmanned Aerial Systems Traffic Management”. He stressed on the various principles and services provided by UTM - its research, technical capabilities, challenges in vehicle technology and also opportunities for students, faculty and industry for research and technological development. During the concluding session – Mr. Parimal clarified queries; the audience had which was an intellectual discussion. Post this, AeroModelling and Drone race competition took off. Team Challengers also conducted various other events like PC games, Rubik’s cube, Treasure Hunt which kept the junior participants engaged.

Dr. S Manjappa felicitated with - Unnathi Lifetime Achievement Award at ICASE-2017, Bangkok

Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director Research & Consultancy was invited to give a technical talk on “Production Ethanol from Hemi-Cellulose Feed-Stocks by the Use of Microbes” at the International Conference on Advances in Science & Engineering (ICASE-2017) in Bangkok. During this event he was felicitated with “The Unnathi Lifetime Achievement Award” for his contribution in the field of Environment and Chemical Sciences. It is worth mentioning that this award was given first on priority among the other set of awards like Best Paper Presenter, Best Researcher, Young Scientist etc.

Fire Extinguishing Demo held for Teaching & Non-Teaching staff

As a part of the annual training for staff members, Fire & Safety training with demo was held for all the Teaching & Non Teaching Staff in the campus. Mr. Norbert Rodrigues, Chief Trainer (F&S) from Hindustan Institute of Safety and Multi Training, Mangalore was the resource person. He explained the basic fire theory which included what is fire, different class of fire, how to extinguish fire, emergency action during fire and operating procedure of different fire extinguishers. The training was assisted by Mr. Santhosh Kumar of Sri Durga Fire Fighters, Mangalore.

FUJITEC India Pvt. Ltd. pooled campus recruitment drive

FUJITEC India Pvt. Ltd. visited Sahyadri to conduct pooled campus recruitment drive for the engineering students of 2017 batch. Mr. Kishan Kumar, Talent Acquisition, FUJITEC India was at the campus to facilitate the entire recruitment process.


Internship programme for Civil Engineering students at Marian Projects, Mangaluru concluded

Internship programme at Marian Projects Pvt Ltd for two batches of twenty students from final year Civil Engineering concluded with the expertise from Er. Ujwal Dsouza, Director O&A, the resource person under the supervision of Ms. Akshitha, HR Manager, Er. Anirudh Rao, Project Head & Er. Sachith, Quantity Surveyor, Marian Projects Pvt Ltd. The internship programme had the following topics highlighted viz, Site execution and Visit, Quantity Surveying and Cost Controls, Procurement & Store Controls. This programme was co-ordinated by Prof. Sudeep Shetty, Department of Civil Engineering.

IBM Training to final year students

Seventh Sense conducted the IBM Company specific Training for the final year students. The training session covered the IBM test patterns and various other topics thus making the students industry ready.



Extensive Survey Camp YR 2016-17 concluded

Extensive Survey Camp at Siddapur for the third year Civil Engineering students concluded and a valedictory ceremony was held. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal was the Chief Guest and Dr. J V Gorbal, Dean Academics was the Guest of Honour of the valedictory ceremony. Prof. S S Balakrishna and Dr. J V Gorbal congratulated the students for successfully completing the ten-day survey camp and also appreciated Prof. Sudeep Shetty, Department of Civil Engineering, The Survey Camp Officer for the well-organised camp. Prof. Purushothama C T, HoD (UG), presided over the function and motivated the students to take up the inputs from the camp seriously and utilize the learning’s effectively. Prof. Umesh S S, HOD (PG) & Dr. Mahesh Davangere, HOD, Mechanical Department were present during the valedictory ceremony.

Dr. Navin N Bappalige invited as a Chief Guest for the Bantwala Taluk Level Republic Day function organized by Taluk administration

Dr. Navin N Bappalige, Associate Professor, Department of Physics was invited as a Chief Guest for the Bantwala Taluk Level Republic Day function organized by Taluk administration. In his speech, besides emphasizing on the greatness of the Indian constitution and the democracy, he highlighted the role of citizens in performing their duties while enjoying the rights given by the constitution. Further, he stressed that democracy will be successful only if the citizens participate actively in the process of Nation Building. Prior to the stage programme, the flag was hoisted by the Bantwal Tahashildar Sri. Purandara Hegde and there was March-Past by Police troop, NCC cadets, Scout & Guides and Bull Bull groups.

Sri. Ramakrishna Alva, Town Muncipality President, Sri. Chandrahasa Karkera, Taluk Panchayat President, Abbas Ali, Vice-President and others were present during the function.

Mr. Anurag Nair, Anglo Eastern Ship Management visits Sahyadri

Mr. Anurag Nair, Junior Marine Engineer, Anglo Eastern Ship Management visited Sahyadri and oriented the Final Year Mechanical Engineering Students regarding Merchant Navy. He encouraged the students to pursue their career in the Merchant Navy as it is unique in every aspect.

NAAC Awareness Week

The NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) which laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India. To address the issues of quality, the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Plan of Action (POA-1992) advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body. Consequently, the NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore.

Winter Training on Web Development by Flicker Infotech

Flicker Infotech conducted a Three-day workshop on web development using HTML, CSS, BOOTSTRAP and PHP. The workshop was conducted at Sahyadri College Campus. Students from various engineering colleges attended the workshop. Participants were delighted by the workshop structure and the takeaways they had in these three days and also for the immense learning outcome. Ms. Raksha Puthran, a student of St. Joseph Engineering College expressed her opinion about the workshop and regarded it as one of the best workshops held in Mangaluru.

Faculty participates in Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2017

In a recently held Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2017, Prof. Sunil C K, Department of Computer Science & Engineering participated and won prizes in Marathon early start, Full Marathon (42.2 km) time taken 3hr 09min 03 sec. He ranked 15th in Open Category and 26th in Overall.

Sahyadrians excel in Muaythai India National Championship

Anisha R. Shetty, a student of sixth semester Department of Mechanical Engineering represented Karnataka and has won Gold medal in 57 to 60 kg category & Ankush R Bhandary, a student of fourth semester Department of Civil Engineering won Bronze medal in Muaythai competition organized by Muaythai National Federation Cup 2017 held at Jaipur, Rajasthan. They have also been selected for 2nd International Thai Martial Arts Games & Festival.

MBA shares the accomplishments of the previous semester & the Road Map for the new semester

On the Day one of the new semester, the students of first year MBA were apprised on the accomplishments of the previous semester in accordance with their expectations collated during the beginning of the academic year. They were also enlightened on the plan of action with regards to value added courses adopted in the even semester which shall be mapped to their employability as an entrepreneur or as being placed in an esteemed organisation. They were re-iterated on the various programmes that shall be conducted at Sahyadri and the positive learning outcome of these events. They have various opportunities to showcase their leadership skills which shall add great value in building their profile. The session ended with a Quiz to summarise their understanding of the entire session.

Federal Bank pooled campus recruitment drive

Federal Bank visited Sahyadri to conduct pooled campus recruitment drive for the candidates from 2016 passed out batch. Results are awaited.

Workshop on “Recent trends in Manufacturing and Management”

The materials and manufacturing vertical of the department of Mechanical Engineering organized a One-Day workshop on “Recent trends in Manufacturing and Management” for second year mechanical engineering students. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, gave an insight about Total Quality Management. Further, he also stressed on the dynamics of market that has taken a paradigm shift from manufacturing-driven to customer-driven. The second session was facilitated by Prof. Ravichandra, Department of Mechanical Engineering who spoke extensively on sustainable manufacturing. Prof. SS Balakrishna, Vice-Principal and Prof. Mahesh B Davangeri, Head of the Department were also present.
