A Grand Inauguration of Sahyadri Conclave – Science, Technology & Management

Sahyadri ConclaveSwami Jitakamanandaji, President, Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru inaugurated Sahyadri Conclave – Science, Technology and Management by Lighting the Lamp in the august presence of Nobel Laureate Ada E Yonath, Nobel Laureate Serge Haroche, Shri. Basavaraj Rayareddy, Hon'ble Minister for Higher Education, Govt. of Karnataka, Shri. M. R. Seetharam, Hon'ble Minister for Planning, Statistics, Science and Technology, Govt of Karnataka, Dr. Murli Dhar Tiwari, Former Director of IIIT, Allahabad & Dr. Shashikiran Shetty, Founder & Chairman, Allcargo Logistics, Mumbai.



Sahyadri Conclave Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Swami Jithakamanandaji appreciated Sahyadri for its student-centric & knowledge-centric approaches. He said he admires Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary for his passion to impart knowledge to students. Swamiji, urged the gathering to develop one’s mind, intellect and heart to bring out the best from within. Shri. Basavaraj Rayareddy in his inaugural address congratulated the institution for bringing together under one roof of Sahyadri, the Nobel Laureates, and Internationally renowned Scientists & Management Experts. He also shared the importance of Science & Technology and how it has impacted life for better.

Sahyadri Conclave Shri. M R Seetharam while inaugurating the Project Exhibition shared the success story of Karnataka for its innovative measures to reach the students of both urban as well rural areas of the state. He mentioned of the first initiative - “Mobile Planetarium” which travels to schools & colleges of remote areas and students get an opportunity to view the Galaxy & Planets, which used to be a challenge years ago. He also highlighted the second initiative of the state - Latest 3D Digitalized Stationary Planetarium to be set up in Pilikula, Mangaluru in February this year which is the first in India and notably first in Asia.

Dr. Murli Dhar Tiwari, the Guest of Honour, in his speech, appreciated Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary on how instrumental he was to get this concept of Science Conclave executed at Sahyadri from the time it was proposed to him. He urged students to take interest in the Plenary Sessions, Panel Discussions & Technical sessions planned for the next 4 days and capitalize on the experiences shared by them at Sahyadri.

Dr. Shashikiran Shetty, the Guest of Honour, in his speech referred to the Nobel Laureates & Scientists as a Gift to mankind since the amount of time they spend to research & the passion to achieve is incredible. Apart from discovering, they also share it with the rest of the world. The industrial revolution is the contribution of theirs, yet they stay humble, simple and sincere. He stimulated students to win a Nobel Prize and encouraged them to dream BIG and discover the unique talent in them. He said that the value system is deteriorating in India hence people like the Chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary should lead and make a difference to the nation.

Ada E Yonath in her talk, expressed how delighted she was when she received an invite from India as she had great learning experiences from the Giant Scientist – Dr. G N Ramchandran an Indian physicist who was the first to propose a triple-helical model for the structure of collagen. She also shared her wonderful experiences when she visited Chennai for a Conference long ago and appreciated India for its temple. She said she loves India, she loves the science in India and she also loves the scientists of India.

Serge Haroche in his talk, mentioned that to be a scientist is a passion and not a profession. For scientists, pleasure of science is pleasure of discovering things. He urged young talented students to get into science as the challenge is to retain youngsters in science since they are attracted to other streams easily. He said the politicians and policy makers have a huge role to play in overcoming the challenges in the field of science.

Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director in his presidential address summed up the theme of the conclave as “Save our Planet”. He assured that at the end of the Sahyadri Conclave one can fine tune his/her dreams and goals.

Sahyadri Conclave Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation while addressing the gathering recollected the moment he was invited to IIITA as guest for the Science Conclave. He said it was a great opportunity to meet the Nobel Laureates at IIITA which made the moment a memorable one for him. Since then, he wanted to create such happy and worthy moments for the students of his place and hence decided to organize Sahyadri Conclave as a social initiative to assist the students of rural areas for their growth and development.

Satya Prakash Prof. Satya Prakash, Professor, Mcgill University, Canada heads the Biomedical Technology & Cell therapy research laboratory at Mcgill University, Montreal, Canada. His major Research areas include Bioengineering, Artificial Cell, Biomaterial, Drug Delivery, Microbiome, Probiotics, Regenerative Medicine, Cell Therapy, Health Food, GI model, Stem Cell, Heart Health, and Medical Device. He will be delivering a session on Microbiome next generation therapeutics.



Sanjay SahayMr. Sanjay Sahay, IPS is the Additional Director General of Police, Govt. of Karnataka. He has accomplished high degree of professionalism in wide and varied professional assignments and finally got groomed and refined into an officer who has 360 degrees experience of all policing tasks, simultaneously maintaining keen interest in all staff functions and a passion for usage of appropriate technology in policing at all levels and in all fields. Important assignments providing immense value addition to his professional persona includes – Chief of Police of three districts Raichur, Mandya and Chamrajnagar, SP and DIG in the State CID, DIG in charge of Finance, UN Peacekeeping in Kosovo and Sudan, Additional Commissioner in Bangalore City, Head of Police Computerization, Communications and State Crime Records Bureau. He created Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, the Police IT, for Karnataka State Police and headed the CCTNS project. At Sahyadri Conclave, Mr. Sanjay Sahay would facilitate a technical session on Mid-Infrared integrated silicon photonics for sensing.

S N Omkar Dr. S N Omkar is currently a Chief Research Scientist at IISC, Bangalore. Prof. Omkar obtained his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Indian Institute of Science. His current research interests include Helicopter dynamics, Satellite image processing, Biomechanics, Uninhabited Air Vehicles (UAV), composite design optimization & structural health monitoring. He has significantly contributed towards the field of helicopter dynamics. His research involves helicopter model development, system identification and control.



Rajashekar HiremathMr. Rajashekar Hiremath, President, Flexitron, Bengaluru, has over 300 plus innovations in varied fields like solar photovoltaic’s, wind energy, led lighting, empowerment equipments for the rural population, textiles, khadi, ceramics, disability aids, silk, artisan equipment and tools. He has extensive ‘hands on’ experience of over 30 years in design, development and production of aids, appliances and systems for ‘Barrier Free Access’ of the challenged population and geriatric persons. He has been conferred with four National Awards by the Government of India in the field of innovation. Out of the four awards, three awards relate to best innovations for the physically challenged. During Sahyadri Conclave, Mr. Rajashekar Hiremath will be facilitating a technical session on “Future of Human transportation”.

Dr. T. G. Sitharam Dr. T. G. Sitharam, Chairman, AICTE, South West Regional Office will be giving a talk on “Sustainable Strategies for Water Resource Development using Rain Water” during Sahyadri Conclave. Prof. Sitharam is the former founder Chairman of a Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) at IISc, Bengaluru. He is also the Vice President of Indian Society for Earthquake Technology (ISET). He was recognized by Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) with IGS-Kucklemann award in 2015 and by IIT-Roorkee with Prof. Gopal Ranjan research award in 2014 for his life time contributions in Geotechnical Engineering. He is also the recipient of Sir CV Raman Young Scientist Award in engineering sciences in 2002.

Dr. Jagadeesh Gopalan Dr. Jagadeesh Gopalan is a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. He is the Founder Chairman of Centre of Excellence in Hypersonics, IISc, Bengaluru. He is also the Founder Director of Super-wave Technology Pvt. Ltd. He was a visiting Professor in Tohoku University, Japan, honorary professor in the University of Glasgow, UK and an Adjunct Professor in Defense Institute for Advanced Studies, Pune. His major recognitions include - Dr. Biren Roy Space Design Award by Aeronautical Society of India, Prof. Satish Dhawan Young Engineer award and Gold Medal by Lockheed Martin -Dept. of Science & Technology. He will be delivering a session on “Enchanting waves”.

Dr. Gopal Mugeraya Dr. Gopal Mugeraya, Director, NIT, Goa obtained his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the area of Biochemical Engineering/Industrial pollution control and Post-Doctoral degree from the University of California Riverside, USA. Along with teaching, he is actively involved in research, consultancy, administrative activities and coordination of technical projects. He had a special privilege as one of the technical expert accompanying The President of India. He will be delivering a session on “Role of Engineers in nation building”.



Dr. Kavi Mahesh Dr. Kavi Mahesh, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Dharwad received Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. He is interested in understanding the ontological basis for everything, applying epistemological models to the ontological basis to derive solutions for teaching, learning, e-teaching, e-learning, collaboration and sharing and management of knowledge. He has been a guest faculty at Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute.



Mr. Ramakrishna Y B Mr. Ramakrishna Y B is the Chairman - Working Group on Bio Fuels Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering from Mysore University and P.G. Diploma in Management from USA. His area of Specialization is Nuclear Engineering. He is the Chairman of Working Group on Bio fuels, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India and Task force on Methanol/DME production from Bio mass/MSW/ other than coal. He will be delivering a talk on “Bio-Energy status in India” during Sahyadri Conclave.



Mr. Sundaram Moorthy Mr. Sundaram Moorthy Sunder is currently the CEO of Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt Ltd, Sahyadri Campus, Adyar, Mangalore. Earlier, he was the director of Yoke Engineering Outsourcing private limited. He has 30 years of in-depth experience in manufacturing especially welding and has worked in various MNCs like Dresser Valves, Cameron, Mokveld Valves. He is specialised in Global Sourcing, Supply Chain Management & Industrial Training. He holds a BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Mysore.



Dr. Dipshikha Chakravortty Dr. Dipshikha Chakravortty is currently working as a Professor in Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. She obtained Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Pune University in the year 2000. Her research interests include infectious diseases and host-pathogen interaction. She has received several awards including Fellow of Indian National Science Academy, NASI-Reliance Platinum Jubilee Award in 2015.




Mr. C D Balaji Mr. C D Balaji is the former director of LCA at Aeronautical Development Agency. He was responsible for the design, development, building and flight testing of LCA (Navy) Prototypes at ADA, Bangalore as the Project Director LCA (Navy). The historic maiden flight of the first Naval variant of LCA (NP1) took place under his leadership.





Cultural Extravaganza

'Laya Lavanya' attempts to explore new dimensions in Instrumental music, both percussion & non-percussion, through the language of orchestrations and group aesthetics. The percussions are played individually & collectively and blend seamlessly with flute, violin and the keyboard, to provide an effect that is exhilarating as well as aesthetically appealing. 'Laya Lavanya' is directed by versatile percussionist Vidwan Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma and presented by renowned mridangam artist Dr. V. Krishna.

Kudroli Ganesh is the winner of 10 prestigious national magic awards such as 'Indrajala Pratibha Mega Magic Award', India's First prestigious 'Illusion Magic Award', Twin Gold Medal Magic Award etc. He reached the final round of highly prestigious talent competition called 'INDIA'S GOT TALENT' organized by COLOURS TV Channel. Kudroli Ganesh was conferred with District Rajyotsava Award – 2011 by the Dakshina Kannada District Administration.

'Nrityaangan' aims to broaden the realm of learning dance by exposure to world-renowned artistes and their performances, workshops, lecture-demonstrations, etc. and has been instrumental in the five years of its existence in bringing about a paradigm shift within the dance fraternity. It is a young and dynamic cultural organisation set up in 2012 by Smt. Radhika Shetty, an upcoming Bharatanatyam professional from Mangaluru, also runs an academy where she imparts training in Bharatanatyam to young students, who dream about becoming performers.

Tejaswi Ananth a 19-year young Variety Entertainer from Bengaluru performs 16 different acts. He is known as one of the India's Youngest Juggler and Unicyclist and he is also one of the World's youngest Hand Shadow Artist. He is the winner of “All India Magic Competition” in Junior’s category. He has performed more than 800 shows in India and abroad for corporate and other events. He has also performed in 9 different TV channels mainly “Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega” in Sony TV, “Hindustan Ke Hunarbaaz” in “OK” channel.

Performance by Sahyadrians

Varun Rao, an alumnus of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management currently working as a Software Developer in DevAppSys IT Solutions, Mangaluru. He has learnt flute under Vidwan Muralidhar, Udupi. He has given solo concerts and also has accompanied other senior artists all over Karnataka.

Abhishek M. B, a Second Year B.E (Mechanical Engineering) student has been awarded with Kalashree Award – 2013 for creative performing arts in flute conducted by Bala Bhavana, Bengaluru. He is the recipient of Aralu Mallige Award – 2014 by Shree Jnana Mandara Education and Cultural Trust Bengaluru & Bala Prathibha Rathna Award on the occasion of Akhila Karnataka Beladingala Sahithya Sammelana.

EXHIBITION

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR - “THE MOVING PLANETARIUM”

Moving Planetariums offer very important Astronomical and Science exhibits. These are latest state of the art related to Astronomical and Science exhibits which are developed by very well-known Research and Development organization such as NOAA Earth Research Organization, Boulder CO, USA and Space Telescope Science Institute of NASA. These exhibits are perfect professional tools to educate and create awareness among people about global warming, recycling and importance of protection of our environment. Students can experience the mesmerizing mysteries of the space at the planetarium held at the conclave.

BARC OUTREACH PROGRAMME

This is a public awareness programme to reach out to academic institutes, R&D institutions and industries by providing authentic technical information with exposure to the participants and also help young graduates to make an informed decision to join the atomic energy programme. Exhibition on BARC Technologies will be organised at the conclave which includes poster gallery, interactive models, LCD displays, information kiosks and AV presentation depicting applications of atomic energy. The space exhibition comprising display of satellite systems, scaled models of satellites and allied information on satellite technologies is set up for the benefit of school children/college community and for general visitors.

Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO)

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will have a major presence at the conclave. DRDO will display a range of defence technologies and equipment. The exhibition includes exhibits which will provide a close look of the achievements of the DRDO in cutting-edge technologies. BRAHMOS will be the main eye-catcher.

BRAHMOS Missile is a supersonic cruise missile and can be used against ship and land targets. It has a range of upto 300 kms. The missile is uniquely configured for installing in ships, submarines & aircraft and on ground vehicles. It has been flight tested twice during June 2001 and April 2002 meeting all mission objectives.



Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd

The Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL), is an organization working under the purview of Energy Department, Government of Karnataka. The main mission of KREDL is to create synergies between industry, finance, government, and technical experts to evaluate challenges and the opportunities arising from law and policy; make politically feasible recommendations to promote clean energy

WORLD OF INSECTS

Insects are those animals with a segmented body, that have body divisions namely head, thorax and abdomen, a pair of antennae, two pairs of wings and three pairs of legs. The big question is - Do these crawling, jumping, flying creatures merit our attention? Their varied life forms, life styles, attractive colours, and an ability to impact the environment in myriad ways make them the most studied groups of organisms in the world. The exhibit is a glimpse into the world of Insects.

Brief Profile of the Chief Guest & Guest of Honour

The Chief Guest - Mr. Priyank M Kharge is the Hon’ble Minister for Information Technology and Bio-Technology & Tourism. At the age of 38, Mr. Kharge is the youngest minister to be sworn into the Karnataka Cabinet. As the Tourism minister, Mr. Kharge announced a science circuit, Bengaluru Tourism Advisory Committee, Hyderabad-Karnataka Tourism Advisory Committee, the coastal circuit and the Cauvery circuit to boost Tourism in the state. Mr. Kharge has also been reaching out to various ecosystem players, from Venture Capitalists, accelerators to co-working spaces, to create an overall favourable environment for start-ups. He is the architect of ‘ELEVATE 100’. He has introduced a Start-up Booster Kit which has facilities like access to mentors, cloud credits and incubators.

The other Chief Guest - Mr. Gaurav Gupta, IAS is the Principal Secretary, Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka. He is instrumental in promoting growth of IT and BT sectors in Karnataka including “Start-Ups”. Currently, his team is working towards the prestigious 'ELEVATE' project for promoting entrepreneurship and Start-Ups. He is instrumental in application of e-technologies for modernization of urban and rural transport system.


Guest of Honour - Prof. Uma Maheshwar Rao Karanam is the Director, NITK, Surathkal. He also served at IIT Kharagpur. Prof. Rao's field of specialisation is experimental rock mechanics and has been working in this area since 1989. He is involved in various sponsored & consultancy projects. He is a recipient of Hindustan Zinc Ltd Gold Medal. Prof. Rao has obtained INSA-KOSEF (Korea Science and Engineering Foundation) award and under this fellowship programme, he worked at Korea Institute of Geo-Sciences and Mineral Resources. He was also awarded Erudite fellowship from KIGAM (South Korea).

Guest of Honour - Prof. K. Byrappa is the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University. He is a PhD from Moscow State University, Russia. He is specialized in Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Solid State Science, Crystal Growth, Chemistry of Materials, Crystallography, Crystal Chemistry, Experimental Mineralogy and Environmental Science. He was honoured with Sir C. V. Raman birth centenary Gold Medal by the Prime Minister of India in recognition for his contribution to science and technology in India.

Sahyadri has secured 4 ranks in the VTU Batch 2015-2017. 2 students from Computer Aided Design of Structures (M.Tech – Civil) Roopini S K (84.79%) and Rohith Kumar A S (83.91%) have secured 2nd and 3rd rank respectively. Vindhya Nayak (88.08%) from Structural Engineering (M.Tech – Civil) has obtained 3rd rank and Sayona Joseph (78.96%) from MBA has secured 6th rank. It is a proud moment for Sahyadrians to appear in the Top list of students among rank holders.

NITK Faculty visits Sahyadri Dr. Udaya Bhat K, Associate Professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Dr. Arun M Isloor, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry and Dr. Vijay Desai, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal visited Sahyadri Campus and interacted with our Chairman , Mr. Manjunath Bhandary. They expressed their interest to meet the Noble Laureates, Scientists and Industrialists during the Conclave and gained heads up on the events planned for the Conclave. The guests viewed the student-centric initiatives in the campus and appreciated the innovative practices implemented for the holistic development of students.
