Bridge Course for New Entrants Commences in the Campus

The three-week bridge course for the new entrants to engineering commenced with the personality development sessions by the resource person Mr. Chethan Ram.

Mr. Chethan Ram explained what personality is and its dimensions with some examples. He spoke about the journey towards one’s success and difference between dream and goal. He also stressed upon how to raise personality from one level to other. He threw light upon the importance and differences of vision and mission statements. He showed different ways of enhancing knowledge and core competency. In the post lunch session, he discussed the important qualities of a person to be No.1 in life. He conducted different activities and involved the audience to give the essence of the concepts.

Mr. Chethan Ram R. A. is Founder & Managing Director, Academy of Management & Corporate Attitude Development (AMCAD) an Institution for Human Potential Development.

He is an Excel Graduate, an International Certification for Training from JCI University, USA. With 25+ years of experience in Personality Development, he has conducted hundreds of training programs all over the country, for all categories of people. Author of several books, audio tapes and CDs on Personality Development, Mr. Chethan Ram is also a Trainer for competitive exams like KAS, IAS, CAT, MAT, and KPSC & UPSC.

The second day of the Bridge Course on Personality Development for the new entrants began with Mr. Chethan Ram the resource person speaking on the topic “Student No.1". He spoke in detail about the problems that students face during their academic career such as lack of concentration, slow reading, different sorts of attractions and distractions, feeling sleepy during studies, etc.

He suggested different rules to enhance concentration. He spoke about the importance of Time Management and put forth the methods to manage time. He motivated the students to set goals and take steps towards achieving them. He gave tips to study effectively and build a network. Mr. Chethan Ram threw light upon the two important topics; Change Management and Team Management and explained its necessity in today’s’ era.

In the post lunch session he spoke about power of motivation and requirement of attitudinal change in one’s life to become successful. He showed many inspirational videos and conducted many interesting activities to make students understand these concepts.

Bridge Course gains momentum for New Entrants to Semester I Engineering Courses

With the two-day Personality Development Training by Mr. Chethan Ram just concluding, students are now fully immersed in other topics which will enable a smooth transition to the Engineering stream. The syllabi for subjects such as Mathematics, Computer Science and English apart from other co-curricular activities will be dealt with over the next sixteen days by relevant in-house faculty members.

The syllabus for Mathematics includes concepts learnt at the PU level as well as additional concepts which are essential pre-requisites for the engineering course. Orientation to Computers is aimed at familiarizing the fundamentals of programming languages thereby enabling them to write small programmes in C language which is a part of I year curriculum for all branches. The module on English is aimed at making the students articulate in English, thereby increasing their comprehension level and self-confidence. The sessions in the afternoon will be on Fun games and Cultural activities.

A sound grasp of the fundamentals of the engineering subjects lays the strong foundation for the entire four year programme. Experience has shown that students who underwent the bridge course have fared extremely well in VTU Examinations. Results improved from 56% to 85% in the first attempt. Students who have attended the bridge course in the previous years have appreciated this initiative. Industry personnel like HRs, CEO’s who visit the Institute regularly have acclaimed it as an eye-opener and it boosts confidence levels significantly.

Learning with Fun

The Bridge Course students were given insights into the placement activities of the college and career opportunities available to them. Ms. Rashmi Bhandary, HoD, Placements & Placement Training along with Ms. Raksha, Assistant Placement Officer, conducted the sessions with the objective of making students aware of the career avenues open to them. They encouraged the students to get involved in all the activities in order to get an edge over the competition prevailing in the job arena. Sessions on other topics such as Mathematics and Computer Science were engaged by the in-house faculty members.

In the post lunch session, the Department of Physical Education gave an overview of the department. They spoke about the past achievements by the students of the college and the many firsts’ it has achieved so far. The students were given the opportunity to opt for their field of interest in sports. Fun games were held where all students took part enthusiastically.

Priya with 83.43% has topped the Sahyadri College in the MCA, Semester II Examination of 2014 -15 held by VTU. Sumithra V. Bhandarkar obtained the second position in the college with 81.81% while Pushpa P. and Abdulla Safha Ahmed with 80.48% stand third. Out of forty students who sat for the examination, thirty secured a first class with distinction, eight secured a first class and one student a second class, bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 97.50%.

Ashwitha Shetty with 80.57% has topped the Sahyadri College in the MCA, Semester IV Examination of 2014 -15 held by VTU. Junaid K. A. obtained the second position in the college with 79.81% while Prajwal with 79.24% stands third. Out of thirty-three students who sat for the examination, twenty-eight secured a first class with distinction and four students secured a first class, bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 96.97%.

Orientation Programme for Parents of New Entrants

The Orientation Programme for parents of new entrants to the Engineering stream was held at the Sahyadri Campus.
Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, gave an overview of the college background. He quoted with examples how the institution benefits from the hard work and the dedication of the students. He spoke about the importance of value added courses and also requested the parents to encourage their wards to take part in every opportunity provided. To make the students more financially responsible, he urged the parents to take up educational loans.

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, addressed the parents and urged them to look beyond academics to shape a better future for their wards. Professor Umashankar B.S. Dean (Academics) addressed the parents on academic preparation and touched upon the finer details in the academic system. He also requested the parents to keep track of the academic performance of their wards.

Mr. Mithun Ullal, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, gave a presentation about the college and a comprehensive overview about the various activities in the college.

Professor Rashmi Bhandary, HOD, Department of Placement & Placement Training, gave insights about the importance of placements activities. She also stressed on the importance of the preparations for placements from the first year itself. Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, HOD, Department of Training, gave an overview of the different training activities.

Prof. Dayanand Shetty, Director STEP & Professor, Electronics & Communications Engineering, spoke on Intel Incubation Centre established in the college and also about the entrepreneurship activities held in the college under the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). Dr. A. P. Manu, HOD, Department of Information Science Engineering laid out the schedule for Microsoft certification courses that were being offered in the institution and briefed on the official collaboration of Sahyadri with Microsoft through The Microsoft Innovation Centre set up in the Campus.

Faculty Member’s Paper in International Journal

A paper titled “Investigating The Impact On BSE Sensex Using Multiple Regression Model" co-authored by Mr. Girish Madla, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, Ms. Ashwitha Karkera and Mr. Madhukar, has been accepted for publication in the Internationally Indexed Open Access Research Journal published by International Journal of Research, Index Copernicus Value of 5.09. The Journal is Indexed & Listed at: Ulrich's Periodicals Directory ©, ProQuest, U.S.A.,EBSCO Publishing, U.S.A., Cabell's Directories of Publishing Opportunities, U.S.A., Open J-Gate, India The American Economic Association's electronic bibliography, EconLit, U.S.A.; Index Copernicus Publishers Panel, Poland and number of libraries all around the world.

Renuka Shenoy obtained the second position in the college with 74.22% while Ronsom Sunil Menezes with 72.78% stands third. Out of one hundred and seventeen students who sat for the examination, nine secured a first class with distinction, sixty-two secured a first class and thirty students a second class, bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 86.30%.
