Chairman at Book Release of Arunkumar Khannur

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, was the Guest of Honour at the Book Release of Mr. Arunkumar Khannur, Chairman and CEO, ISQT Process and Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd. Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman requested the gathering to help bridge the gap between academia and industry and to share their experience by writing/releasing books. The Placement & Training team was also present at the book release.

Dr. Sridhar Mitta, Managing Director, NextWealth Entrepreneurs Pvt. Ltd released the book `Structured Software Testing – The Discipline of Discovering Software Errors’ by Mr. Arunkumar Khannur.

Dr. Basavaraj Anami, Principal, KLE College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli, presented the highlights of the book. Swami Yogeshwaranandaji, Ramakrishna Yogashrama, blessed the programme. Mr. Arunkumar Khannur, Chairman & CEO, ISQT Process & Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, accompanied by Ms. Sharada H. S., Chief, Business Operations, ISQT, met and interacted with Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman and the Training & Placement team of the institution. During their interaction, training modules for students of Engineering were discussed. Later, they were taken around the Campus and were appreciative of the infrastructure and facilities.

Mr. Arunkumar Khannur is an internationally reputed senior IT Professional. He is a Subject Matter Expert, Advisor, and Faculty in Software Testing. He has provided consulting services to 48 companies in 9 countries, trained 20000+ IT professionals, and authored six books. `Structured Software Testing – The Discipline of Discovering Software Errors’ was recently released in Bangalore. Mr. Khannur provides consulting, advisory, and training services across India, China, Russia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Malaysia, and Indonesia. He has extended his expertise to UNIDO - United Nations Industrial Development Organization - as an International Expert on Software Engineering and Management.

Ms. Sharada H. S. is an achiever having many awards to her credit and is an exemplary trainer. She is an ISO certified internal auditor and is a Nominated Member of the Education Committee at FKCCI, Bangalore.

Training Programme on “Optical Fibre Communication Systems” inaugurated

The training programme on “Optical Fibre Communication Systems” was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Mr. Balasubramaniam Iyer, Vice President, Reliance JIO Infocomm Ltd. The principals and placement officers of various colleges and the selected trainees attended the inaugural function. The training programme is a part of “Mission VTU-Empower 10000” scheme launched by VTU, Belgaum, to train the students and get them placed in industries. The chief guest in his inaugural address lauded the programme and extended his full support in the placement process. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mr. Geo D’Silva, Special Officer (P&T), VTU-Belgaum, and Prof. Abdul Kareem, Coordinator, graced the occasion.

Prof. S. Chandrashekar on “Understanding Self & Interpersonal Relationship”

The three-day long Faculty Development Programme on “Understanding Self & Interpersonal Relationship” by Prof. S. Chandrashekar, Joint Director, Inspectors DTE, Bangalore, commenced with the topic of helping the individuals to understand self and interpersonal relationships explaining that life is difficult but is beautiful. He also stressed on the truth about personal, intermediate and absolute and briefed about who are winners and losers.

On the second day of the FDP Prof. S. Chandrashekar dealt with topics like `The Need for Self-Esteem, `Our Paradigm’, `Problems & Pain’, `The Choice’, and `Trust’. The participants were made to make a self-assessment of themselves with discussions being held.

The third and final day saw Prof. S. Chandrashekar speaking on topics like `Blame and Forgiveness’, `Withholding Truth’, `Balancing’, and `Giving up.’ He also dealt with `Loneliness and Death’. He concluded the three-day long FDP by addressing the topic `A Recipe for Happiness’ with feedback from the participants. Thirty senior faculty members of the institution attended the workshop.

Week-long VTU sponsored FDP on “Enhancing Competency for Quality Teaching” held in the Campus

The week-long VTU sponsored Faculty Development Programme on “Enhancing Competency for Quality Teaching” was inaugurated by Dr. Chidanand Gavimath, Special officer, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, VTU. In his inaugural address he enlightened the audience on the unique features of VTU and the recent prominent awards bagged by the University. He conveyed his best wishes for the programme.

Dr. Umesh Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management presided over the inaugural function. Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration and Dr. Umashankar B. S., Dean-Academics were present during the inaugural ceremony. The program had thirty-two delegates participating from different corners of the state.

Dr. Umesh Bhushi in his session on “TQM in teaching” stressed on the importance of enjoying work and called upon the teaching community to consider work as a profession and not a job. He said that the main aspect of professional teaching is to trigger the students’ thought processes. Finally, he told the audience not just to preach but also to practice TQM.

Dr. A. P. Achar, in his session on “Tool & Techniques of TQM in Teaching” defined Management in terms of input, process and output. He said output symbolizes “Students” who are the customers of educational institutions and to have excellent output the teaching process has to be qualitative. He emphasized on implementation of quality techniques like Kaizen, 3M’s, 5S’s & 5D’s in teaching.

Dr. Umashankar B. S. in his session on “Quality Assurance & Accreditation” said that quality means different things to different people. He spoke about various quality gurus and stressed on quality in education, four pillars of education and quality assurance in higher education.

ICT in Teaching
The second day of the week-long Faculty Development Programme on “Enhancing Competency for Quality Teaching” began with a session on “ICT in Teaching” by Prof. Chowdari Prasad, Dean (Public Relation) at TAPMI. The session primarily focused on the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) in education. He said that one should not only extract information from the internet but also upload the class PPT’s, conference papers and so on through Scribd, Author Stream, SlideShare and others. He stressed that 21st century pedagogy should have thinking skill, problem solving and Project-based learning. The next session by Dr. B. P. Murali, EDI, Bangalore, on “Training in Entrepreneurship” focused on the different stages of entrepreneurship development and related aspects.

In another session on day-3 of the FDP on “Enhancing Competency for Quality Teaching” Dr. B. P. Murali, Professor, EDI, Bangalore, discussed the fifteen competencies that an entrepreneur needs to possess and elucidated on EDI-EDP model. Another session was engaged by Dr. Molly S. Chaudhuri, Head, Training & Development, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, who involved the participants in motivational and confidence building activities.

On day four of the one week Faculty Development Programme on “Enhancing competency in quality teaching” the participants with the coordinating team visited Manipal Technologies, Shankar Roofing Systems and Abhideep Industries to witness the best practices in industry. The team also visited TAPMI, a leading Private autonomous Business School and interacted with its Professors on teaching practices and AACSB accreditation.

On day-5 of the Faculty Development Programme, Dr. Ajith Kumar, Professor, TAPMI and Prof. Sumitha Achar, Aloysius Institute of Management, addressed the participants on “Introduction to Research” covering aspects concerning academic research and literature review. Prof. Sumitha Achar discussed about the various tools available for data analysis and interpretation.

The Week-long FDP Concludes
The week-long Faculty Development Programme on "Enhancing Competency for Quality Teaching" concluded with the Valedictory function. Dr. P. N. Udaya Chandra, Registrar, SDM, Ujire (Autonomous) and Dr. Chidananda Gavimath, Special Officer, ED Cell, VTU and Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, presided over the function. Mr. Karthik Kudroli, Coordinator of the Programme presented the report of the week long FDP.

Phase II: Orientation Programme for Parents of New Entrants to the Engineering Stream

Phase II of the Orientation Programme for parents of new entrants to the Engineering stream was held in the Campus. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, addressed the parents and sought their support for the continuous improvement of the students. He also gave a call to the parents to make their wards independent.

Mr. Rakshith P. Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering gave a presentation about the college and a comprehensive overview about the various activities and achievements of the College.

Professor Umashankar B.S. Dean (Academics) addressed the parents on academic preparation and touched upon the finer details in the academic system. He also requested the parents to keep track of the academic performance of their wards. Professor Rashmi Bhandary, Head of Placements & Placement Training, gave insights about the importance of placements and training activities. She also stressed on the importance of the preparations for placements from the first year itself. She requested the parents to encourage their wards to take up internship during vacations. Professor Dayanand Shetty, Director STEP & Professor, Electronics & Communications Engineering, spoke on the Intel Incubation Centre established in the College and also about the entrepreneurship activities held in the college under NEN. Dr. A. P. Manu, HOD, Information Science & Engineering laid out the schedule for Microsoft certification courses that were being offered in the institution and briefed on the official collaboration of Sahyadri with Microsoft through the Microsoft Innovation Centre set up in the campus. A question answer session was held to clear the queries of the parents regarding various aspects.

Feel Employable: Orientation Programme for New Entrants to
UG Courses

A three-day student orientation “Feel Employable” – Phase I for the new entrants of the engineering stream was held in the Campus. Prof. Sunney Tharappan along with his team conducted the progamme.

There were different sessions wherein students were put into different groups and asked to perform various activities which gave them a real understanding of the concept that were to be dealt with in the sessions. Prof. Sunney Tharappan gave some insights on the engineering competencies and its importance in today’s era. A case study was discussed in groups to explain that humans are the most dependent creatures but also important. He stressed upon the difference between success and effectiveness. He spoke about appreciating the good qualities in oneself and urged the students to practice person-centered communication.

On day two of the programme, Prof. Sunney Tharappan and his team stressed on “Human Relation Skills.” The other topics dealt by the resource person were “Effective Criticism”, The art of Describing”, “The Art of Arguing”, “The Art of Refuting”, etc. Learning to be social and its importance was another topic which the team engaged the students in.

The participants were given a chance to attempt how to write a bio–data and also mock interviews were conducted in two sessions within the groups which gave a corporate selection feel to the participants. A platform was provided for the participants to share their opinion and views through group discussions. Different activities were also held to make the sessions lively which ensured student’s active participation.

On the final day of the student orientation “Feel Employable” – Phase I programme a session on “Mind Skill Development” was taken up by Prof. Sunney Tharappan and his team.

Some of the other topics dealt with by the resource persons were “Participating in Group Discussion”, “Scope of Group Discussion’, “ Being a Part of a Working Team’, “Contributing to Team Work”, etc. The participants were given a chance to attempt how to write an application and also mock interviews were conducted in two sessions within the groups which gave a corporate selection feel for the participants and also taught them the “ Do’s and Don’ts” of the interview process. A platform was provided for the participants to share their opinion and views through group discussions. At the end of the programme students were awarded with a participation certificate.

Prof. Sunney Tharappan is the Director of College for Leadership and HRD. He has taught in a college for quarter of a century before he joined AIM INSIGHTS, the HRD group, which administers the College for Leadership and HRD. Innovative in thinking, he has been responsible for the type of research in human resource development that has been done by CLHRD. He has written several volumes on HRD and Leadership apart from making presentations in different institutions, conferences, workshops and seminars.

Cruise & Dine Owner Visits Sahyadri

Mr. J. K. Rao, owner of the cruise ship, Cruise & Dine, visited Sahyadri. He was received by Prof. M. N. Nayak, Administrator & Dean-Placements. Mr. Rao interacted with Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal and during their interaction he has invited the faculty members and staff to visit his ship. He has offered concessions for group bookings too.

Two hundred and thirty-one students secured a first class with distinction, one hundred and forty-eight secured a first class and ninety-five students secured a second class, bringing the overall percentage score of the Chemistry and Physics cycle to 83.60%.

Dr. A. P. Achar a Part of National Artisan Policy Committee

With a view to provide better living standards and to make the artisans to avail benefits of inclusive development being enforced by our BJP government in the centre, Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration has been invited to be a part of an expert committee for drafting the National Artisan Policy in the National Artisans Meet in New Delhi next week. He has been entrusted to draft a policy for Artisan Clusters. A total of thirteen members from various states of India have been invited to draft policies for various specialized sectors.

Staff Training of Department of Commercial Taxes at Sahyadri

Sri N. K. Hemant Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Commercial Taxes and Ex-Capt. Shambhu Bhat, Assistant Commissioner Commercial Taxes inaugurated the first of the training programmes for the staff of the Department of Commercial Taxes in the Sahyadri campus.

Earlier last week, the Joint Commissioner along with the Assistant Commissioner Commercial Taxes and the Commercial Tax Officer visited the Campus and initiated discussions with the administration of the institution to conduct these training programmes for the staff of the Commercial Taxes department.

Faculty Member’s Paper in International Journal

A paper entitled “Detecting and Removing Cooperative Black and Grayhole Attacks in MANET” by Ms. Prathibha Bhat S., Assistant Professor, Department of Information Science & Engineering has been published in The International Journal of Emerging Technology and Advanced Engineering, Volume 4 Issue 7 in July 2014 ISSN: 2250-2459.

Faculty Member in Summer Faculty Research Fellow Programme-2014

Mr. Manjunath Mulimani, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, participated in the six weeks Summer Faculty Research Fellow Programme -2014 under Continuing Education Programme (CEP) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He has also successfully completed a project entitled “Deployment of cloud using open source” under the guidance of Dr. Gopal Krishan as a part of the Summer Faculty Research Fellow Programme -2014.

CEP of IIT, Delhi, has taken a new initiative of starting Summer Faculty Research Fellow Programme since 2008. The main objective of this progamme is to help in inducting and inculcating a research culture among the faculty of engineering and science institutes outside the IIT system. The visiting faculty fellow stays in IIT, Delhi, during the summer and works with a faculty mentor who is a regular faculty of IIT Delhi. This way, a faculty fellow who is planning to start on their Ph.D. (or post-graduate research programme) can spend the summer months (May-July) under the guidance of an active research faculty mentor of IIT, Delhi. The faculty fellow will also get an opportunity to interact and work with the faculty and research students of the group and get exposure to the equipment and lab facilities associated with the faculty mentor. Access to other general facilities such as the central library is also feasible.

Faculty Member Presents Research Paper in National Conference

Mrs. F. Jyothi Serrao, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics presented a research paper titled “ Aging effects on the structural and optical properties of Ga -doped ZnO thin films deposited by sol-gel spin coating method’ in a National Conference, NCSEA-2014 organized by Departments of Science, St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor.

Faculty Members Attend National Conference

Mr. Deepak P. Naik and Ms. Aysha Shabana, Assistant Professors, Department of Mathematics, attended a two- day National Conference on “ Current Trends in Scientific Research for Engineering Applications” organized by the Department of Science, St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor. This conference brought them in contact with different research scholars where they discussed many research topics on graph theory and lattice theory.

In-service Education Programme by Sahyadri College of Nursing held in the Campus

The fourth year B. Sc. students of Sahyadri College of Nursing conducted an in-service education programme on Quality Assurance in Nursing, “Moving towards Excellence”. Sr. Aileen Mathais, Chief Nursing Officer, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore, was the Chief Guest of the function. Prof. Irene Veigas, Principal Sahyadri College of Nursing, presided over the function.

Sr. Aileen Mathais engaged the first session on “Requirement of Quality Assurance Nurses” followed by “Role of Research, Leadership & Management” by Mrs. Neetha Kamath, HOD, Community Health Nursing, Sahyadri College of Nursing. Prof. Irene Veigas, Principal of the College spoke on “Empowerment” while Dr. A. Raja, Principal, Unity College of Nursing, Mangalore and the Chief Guest of the Valedictory function engaged a session on “Language of Quality”.

Vanamahotsava Programme Organised by Sahyadri P. U. College

Sahyadri P. U. College organized a Vanamahotsava Programme at Government Higher Primary School, Kumpala. About forty II PU students under the guidance of Ms. Deepthi, Lecturer, Kannada Department, participated in the programme.

Prof. Mahesh Nayak, Administrator & Dean (Placement), Mr. Rakshith Shetty, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Department, and Mr. Naveen Pilar, Co-ordinator, Art and Culture Department, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mr. Vasant Kedige, Graphic Designer, APTRA, and Mr. Vishwanath, Headmaster, Government Higher Primary School, Kumpala were the Chief Guests on the occasion.

The programme was inaugurated by handing over a sapling to the Headmaster of Government Higher Primary School, Kumpala. Prof. Mahesh Nayak administered the oath to the students and urged them to plant at least one sapling every year as a part of the afforestation drive.

Mr. Vasant Kedige explained the importance of conservation of nature and unveiled the slogans related to afforestation. Later, the guests and students, under the supervision of Mr. Naveen Pilar planted several saplings of vegetable and flower-bearing plants in the school campus.
