Chairman inaugurates Sri Ramakrishna College Student Union Council 2014-2015

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, was invited to inaugurate the Student Union Council 2014 -15 of Sri Ramakrishna College at A. B. Shetty Hall, Mangalore. In his inaugural address he spoke about leadership qualities, how to improve during college days, and how students can build their career in future.

The Chief Guest of the function was Mr. M. Sundar Shetty, Former Secretary & EC Member BANM (Bunter Alias Nadavara Mathra) Sangha. Dr. Naveen Shetty K. Principal of Ramakrishna College, Mangalore was present on the dais.

Director Research invited as resource person

Dr. C. Ranganathaiah , Director of Research, was invited as a resource person for the National Workshop held at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Manasagangotri, Mysore. It was sponsored by Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) Bangalore and STQIP-II, He addressed the young researchers and faculty members selected from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh on the topic ‘Fundamentals of nanodielectric materials and interfaces’.

Prof. Ranganathaiah gave a brief introduction to dielectrics and spoke on the evolution of nanodielectric. While dealing with Nanocomposites he provided the necessary mathematical basics of dielectrics highlighting the conventional theories and their limitations.The focus was on the experimentation in nanodielectrics, particularly polymer based nanodielectrics. Speaking about ‘What is that we understand from experimental data?’, he gave the wonderful aspects of experimentation and concentrated more on the areas the young researchers fail to pay attention as it is very much needed for a better understanding of the materials and how best they could be used in the end applications. Of the several aspects, he explained the role of Surface functionalization, Intra and intermolecular interactions, particle sizes etc. Few models for describing Nanocomposites were briefly outlined before concluding his talk.

Phase III: Orientation Programme for Parents of New Entrants to the Engineering Stream

Phase III of the Orientation Programme for parents of new entrants to the Engineering stream was held in the Campus. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, gave an overview of the college background. He quoted with examples how the institution benefits from the hard work and the dedication of the students. He requested the parents to encourage their wards to take part in every opportunity provided. To make the students more financially responsible he urged the parents to take up educational loans. He Congratulated and thanked the parents for the overwhelming response and support. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, addressed the parents and sought their support for the continuous improvement of the students. He also gave a call to the parents to make their wards independent. He inspired the parents with his life experience and advised them to encourage the children to look beyond academics. Mr. Rakshith P. Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering gave a presentation about the college and a comprehensive overview about the various activities and achievements of the College.

Professor Umashankar B.S. Dean (Academics) addressed the parents on academic preparation and touched upon the finer details in the academic system. He also requested the parents to keep track of the academic performance of their wards. Professor Rashmi Bhandary, Head of Placements & Placement Training, gave insights about the importance of placements and training activities. She also stressed on the importance of the preparations for placements from the first year itself. She requested the parents to encourage their wards to take up internship during vacations. Professor Dayanand Shetty, Director STEP & Professor, Electronics & Communications Engineering, spoke on the Intel Incubation Centre established in the College and also about the entrepreneurship activities held in the college under NEN. Dr. A. P. Manu, HoD, Information Science & Engineering laid out the schedule for Microsoft certification courses that were being offered in the institution and briefed on the official collaboration of Sahyadri with Microsoft through the Microsoft Innovation Centre set up in the campus.

A question answer session was held to clear the queries of the parents regarding various aspects. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal and Dr. D.L. Prabhakara, Director Sahyadri Institutions answered all the questions raised in the session.

Train the Trainers program on Essentials of Soft Skills and Leadership

Mr. Arunkumar Khannur, Chairman & CEO, ISQT Process & Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd. addressed the faculty members of the college on “Essentials of Soft Skills and Leadership”. He spoke on topics like ‘good leadership’, ‘questionnaire on assessing leadership potential’, ‘how to be fundamentally strong?’, ‘moral growth of an individual’, ‘value systems’ ‘frame work’,'Self Esteem’, ‘Self Control’ and ‘Self Respect’, “Colour Brain Theory”, “Fundamentals of Powerful Principles of Instruction”, “First Order Principles of Instruction”, “Communication Process and the Agenda to be Followed”, 'powerful principles of instructions’ and ‘Teaching Strategies’ - group discussion , role plays, games , presentation, quiz, brainstorming ,case studies concept mapping,‘collaborative thinking and problem solving’, etc. He educated the participants on the models of adult learning and changing the role from teacher to facilitators. He discussed the role of emotions in one’s life. He also discussed about the factors that affect the behavior of a person and different approaches pertained to the motivation. Mr. Khannur inspired and educated the faculty members and made them to think on ‘Are leaders born or made?’Twenty one faculty members of the college participated in the programme.

VTU Semester VI Results: Sahyadri 78.1%

The VTU results of Semester VI of all Engineering streams are declared. Out of 503 students who appeared for the VTU Examination 2013-14, 126 students passed with distinction, 175 with a first class and 92 with a second class, bringing the overall percentage score to 78.1%.

The VTU results of Semester IV of all Engineering streams are declared. Out of 536 students who appeared for the VTU Examination 2013-14, 99 students passed with distinction, 145 with a first class and 98 with a second class, bringing the overall percentage score to 63.8%.

Feel Employable: Orientation Programme for New Entrants to
UG Courses

A three-day student orientation “Feel Employable” – Phase II for the new entrants of the engineering stream was held in the Campus. Prof. Sunney Tharappan along with his team conducted the progamme.

There were different sessions wherein students were put into different groups and asked to perform various activities which gave them a real understanding of the concept that were dealt in the sessions. Prof. Sunney Tharappan gave some insights on the engineering competencies and its importance in today’s era. A case study was discussed in groups to explain humans are the most dependent creatures but also important. He stressed upon the difference between success and effectiveness. He spoke about appreciating the good qualities in oneself and urged the students to practice person-centered communication. He also dealt with the topics like ‘Engineering Situation’, ‘Building Self Esteem and Self Confidence’, ‘Power of Body System’ “Human Relationship Skills”and ‘Discovering Breakthrough’ etc.

The participants were given a chance to attempt how to write a bio–data and also mock interviews were conducted in two sessions within the groups which gave a corporate selection feel to the participants. A platform was provided for the participants to share their opinion and views through group discussions. Different activities were also held to make the sessions lively which ensured student’s active participation. Prof. Sunney Tharappan is the Director of College for Leadership and HRD. College for Leadership and HRD is an institution which offers two Composite Graduate Programmes. The first is BHRD, a Composite Graduate Programme and the second is MFLHRD, a Composite Postgraduate Programme. Both are highly innovative in the sense that they are not affiliated to any university and are pursued by students alongside their university, graduate or postgraduate programmes.

Prof. Sunney Tharappan is the Director of College for Leadership and HRD. He has taught in a college for quarter of a century before he joined AIM INSIGHTS, the HRD group, which administers the College for Leadership and HRD. Innovative in thinking, he has been responsible for the type of research in human resource development that has been done by CLHRD. He has written several volumes on HRD and Leadership apart from making presentations in different institutions, conferences, workshops and seminars. Prof. Anila, CE, CLHRD, Mangalore , Prof. Subrahmanya P., Retd., St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, Prof. K.P.P. Sharma, Former Principal, CLHRD, Mangalore, Prof. Ananthapadmanabha Rao, Retd., SVS College, Bantwal, Ms. Meena Kumari, Lecturer KVG, Sullia and Dr, Savithri, Principal Sri Devi College of Interior Designing were the other resource persons.



                 


Mr. Arunkumar Khannur Addresses Faculty Members

Mr. Arunkumar Khannur, Chairman & CEO, ISQT Process & Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd. addressed the faculty members of the college on “Moving Up in Value Chain: Co-creation of Knowledge for Growth & Prosperity”. Explaining the objective of the programme, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, addressed the faculty members and gave a call to update oneself to the current requirement and to focus on the quality of the education. He also stressed upon carrying positive attitude and brand building. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal introduced the resource person formally to the gathering.

Mr. Khannur commenced the session on self revelation & self discovery. He shared his life experience and visual presentation and inspired the faculty crowd. He stressed on topics like ‘moving up in value chain’ , ‘career path’, ‘blooms taxonomy’, ‘factors that separates performers & non performers’ and ‘know how what knowledge & skills are required’ etc. Twenty faculty members were selected for “Train the Trainers” program which would commence shortly in the Campus.

Cdr. Santhosh T. Pillai at Sahyadri

Cdr. Santhosh T. Pillai , Command Recruitment Officer Headquarters, Southern Naval Command visited the institution. He was received by Prof. M. N. Nayak and shown around the Campus. He was appreciative of the infrastructure and facilities in the Campus. Discussions on naval recruitment, student visit to the Naval Engineering College, faculty interactions and sports were held with the management.

Bridge Course Concludes

The eighteen-day bridge course for the new entrants to the first year Engineering came to an end. The final session was engaged by Mr. Adithya Puthraya, Founder, V4 Wild Life. He delivered a talk on conservation of the wild life and answered many questions about them and also spoke about the science behind belief. ‘Manthana’ Our walk towards change, organized ‘Green Exchange’ programme for the students where students exchanged the plants that they had brought with each other and took oath on saving the environment. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal and Dr. Umashanker B. S., Dean-Academic took part in the programme.

In the Valedictory programme Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, released ‘Sahyadri….The Bridge’ a book by the students of the bridge course. It contains articles, reports & photography. He appreciated the students and their effort in publishing a book. He wished all the students a fruitful academic year. He gave them a call to continue in the same spirit throughout their course. Dr. Antony A. J. Vice-Principal, spoke about the rules and regulations that have to be followed and stressed on the discipline and inaugurated ‘Trend Setters’ a Wall Magazine of the Department of English. Prof. Mahesh N. Nayak, Administrator and Mrs. Shreelatha.U.A, A.A.O., gave a few guidelines to the students and to make the best use of the opportunities given to them. The winners of different competitions were awarded in the programme. Mrs. Nithisha Rodrigues, Director of Physical Education and Mrs. Saritha, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science shared their experience and gave a call to the students to love their teachers and the education. Students expressed their happiness and gave their feedback. The formal function was followed by cultural programmes and games.

HCL Pool Campus Recruitment Drive

HCL conducted a pool campus recruitment drive in the Campus for the passed out students of the 2013-14 batch. Around 380 students from Mangalore and the neighboring states attended the drive.

Aryaka Networks Pool Campus Recruitment Drive

Aryaka Networks conducted a pool campus recruitment drive in the Campus for the passed out students of the 2014 batch. Around eighty students of Engineering and MBA streams attended the drive.

Orientation Programme for Students of Semester III E &C

One day orientation programme for the students of Semester III, Electronics & Communication Engineering was held in the Campus. Prof. Manoj Kumar M., HoD, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, welcomed the students and complimented them for joining the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. He briefed about the opportunities available for the Engineering (E&C) Students after the completion of their degree. Mr. Ashwin Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering briefed about the department, highlighting the various state of the art laboratories available in the department and also introduced all the faculty members present in the department. Mr. Sharathchandra Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, spoke on the entire course work. He explained the importance and application of each and every subject with visual presentation.

Faculty Member’s Paper in International Journal

A paper entitled “Analysis of Diabetic Data Set Using Hive and R” authored by Mrs. Sadhana, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, co authored by Ms. Savitha Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Nitte has been published in The International Journal of Emerging Technology and Advanced Engineering, Volume 4 Issue 7 in July 2014 ISSN: 2250-2459.

Mr. Lokesh, Assistant Professor (S.G.) has also presented a research paper on ‘Leadership and Social Capital’.

The seminar was organized by SDM College in collaboration with National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM), Mangalore Chapter.
