Planning of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt 2015

The first meeting of the planning of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt 2015, was held in the campus. Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi, welcomed the faculty members from their vacation and emphasized that the admission at Sahyadri is mainly because of two activities conducted during the last year. The two activities, Student Project Support Scheme (SPSS) Projects at Sahyadri and Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt 2014 (SSTH) held at the pre-university colleges of Kerala and Karnataka Region has created a huge demand for admission at Sahyadri.

Prof. Sudheer Shetty, Chief coordinator, SSTH, & HoD, Department of Computer Science, explained the Preamble, Objectives of SSTH, and the proposed plans for the event. 20 zones from Kerala, 20 Zones from Mangalore and 10 Zones from outside Mangalore regions are to be identified. 250 to 400 students or five colleges combined together will make a Zone. At the zonal level, there will be two events. The calendar of events was displayed to complete the work on time as planned. He also mentioned the roles and responsibility of regional and zonal coordinators. The list of materials to be carried during each visit to the colleges was clearly explained. It is also announced that there will be separate prizes for Karnataka and Kerala regions. For 200 projects, INR Rs. 10 lakhs grants will be provided.

“FEEL Teacher-Freedom & Punishment” faculty development programme at Sahyadri

The three day faculty development programme “FEEL TEACHER COMMUNICATION” was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi. He highlighted that teaching is an enjoyable profession and encouraged faculty members to take part in the session well and enjoy the learning process.

The FEEL Teacher Communication is the first unit of a nine day ’FEEL Teacher’ programme and the stress is on interpersonal communication. The main objectives of this training programme are to help participants understand what is human resource and its development, the need for attitudinal changes in developing resourcefulness of students, to identify skills that are needed to become an effective teacher and to influence teachers to make necessary changes in the strategies, methods and techniques of classroom functioning.

The main resource person of the training programme, Prof. Sunney Tharappan, Director, CLHRD stated that quality of a programme depends on the person who goes through the training. Teachers fall under the category of helpers. He emphasized the need for developing competencies with students by being helpers. He also appreciated the Sahyadri environment. Prof. Sunney Tharappan, is a thinker, writer, master facilitator and trainer, but most of all, a teacher, researching on the development of human resource. He has trained over 16000 teachers across India and Sri Lanka.

The programme helped the faculty members to develop the communication perspective that will help them inspire their students to become Role Models, develop an institutional perspective and hone their skills on a continuous basis.

Prof. Subrahmanya and Prof. Anila Kamath were the other resource persons.Thirty six faculty members participated in this programme. The programme was co-ordinated by Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, HoD, Department of Training.

The three days training programme “FEEL Teacher-Freedom & Punishment” was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi. He highlighted that fear cannot be the essence of teaching and suggested that the faculty should utilize these training outcomes in day to day life. He emphasized that the students should benefit from the faculty development program as these aim at not only making us successful but more importantly an effective teacher. The resource person of the training programme, Prof. Sunney Tharappan, Director, CLHRD stated that his greatest happiness is to work with faculty who are more open to changes. The most important division of labour is helper, and teacher is the most powerful tool that comes under the helper category. He emphasized that teachers influence more in a collective way than parents, and added that no profession is as powerful as the profession of a teacher.

The training programme will help the participants understand the concepts of freedom and punishment, build an attitudinal change towards the students, identify skills to become an effective teacher, influence them to make necessary changes in the strategies, methods and techniques of classroom functioning, and assist in assessing themselves by introducing different stages and methods of assessments of performance.

Twenty eight faculty members are participating in this programme. The programme was co-ordinated by Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, HoD, Department of Training.

Valedictory of faculty development programme “Winning Ways”

The Valedictory Programme for “Winning Ways” was held on 11th July 2015 at Sahyadri Seminar Hall. Principal Dr. U.M.Bhushi, presided over the function. Resource persons, Mr. Ramkumar Seshu and Mr. Srinath Birur, were present.

Over the two days, the faculty learnt and designed a roadmap for the institution. Principal, Dr. U.M.Bhushi gave his closing remarks by saying that earlier teaching was considered as a transfer of knowledge, but now the profession has been redefined to include the development of the faculty and the institution as well.

Kirloskar Toytota Textile Machinery campus recruitment drive

Kirloskar Toyota Textile Machinery recruitment drive was conducted in the campus. Six Mechanical Engineering students of 2015 Batch from Sahyadri have been shortlisted for the final round of interview.

XL Dynamics Pooled Campus Recruitment Drive

XL Dynamics conducted a recruitment drive in the campus. HR Representatives from the company had presented the pre-placement talk which was followed by the recruitment process. 150 students from different colleges in and around the Mangaluru region participated in the drive. 24 students are shortlisted by the company.

Mrs. F. Jyothi Serrao Presents her Research Paper at an International Conference

Mrs. F. Jyothi Serrao, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics has won the “Best Poster Presentation Award” at the International Conference on Recent Advances in Nano Science and Technology (RAINSAT-2015), organized by Sathyabama University, Chennai during 8th to 10th July 2015. Her presentation was entitled “Effect of Electron Irradiation on the Properties of GZO Thin Films Deposited by Sol-Gel Method”.

BESCOM CAT 2015 test at Sahyadri

BESCOM CAT 2015 was successfully held on Sunday, 12th July 2015 at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. BESCOM – Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited is responsible for power distribution in eight districts of Karnataka.

Out of 960 candidates registered for the post of Assistant in the morning session, 511 candidates wrote the test. In the afternoon session, out of 960 candidates registered for the test for the post of Junior Assistant, 531 candidates wrote the test.

Mr. D. Nagaraj, Executive Engineer (Elec.), O&M East Circle, BESCOM-Bangalore and Mr. Santhosh Kumar D. K., Asst. Professor, Canara Engineering College were the observers for the test. Mr. Rathina Kumar, Asst. Executive Engineer (Elec.), BESCOM-Kolar was the special observer.

The test was coordinated by Mr. Chethan G. C., Operation Executive, IIM/META-i Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

The ambience of the Sahyadri Campus was well appreciated by all of them. They also commended all the arrangements made for the conduct of the test.
