Sahyadri Ranked 42nd among Top 100 Private Engineering Colleges in India

Sahyadri has been ranked 42nd among the Top 100 Private Engineering Colleges in India by The Higher Education Review in their Top 100 Private Engineering Colleges Survey 2016. The College has been ranked for the positive impact it has made on the society and the education fraternity.

Sahyadri Assigned as Third Party Consultant for Construction Work in Bantwal

The Department of Civil Engineering was assigned as third party consultant for all Government related construction works which will be taking place in Bantwal Taluk. Er Narendra Babu, AEE, PRCD Sub Division, Bantwal visited Sahyadri and had an interaction with Dr U M Bhushi, Principal and Prof Umesh S S, PG HOD, Civil Department in this regard.

Bridge Course for New Entrants Gets Underway in the Campus

The 18-day Bridge Course for the new entrants to the College got underway in the Campus. The students were given a warm welcome by the Program Director Dr. C. K. Manjunath. He briefed students about the outline and importance of the Bridge Course. Dr. Ananth Prabhu and Mr. Rakshith Shetty, faculty members engaged sessions with the participants. Plenty of videos, ice-breaking sessions and other activities were conducted to make the students get energised to get into the college. One hundred and fifteen students are attending this course.

A Bridge Course for new entrants to the College is conducted every year before the commencement of the first semester classes. The main objective of the course is to bridge the gap between subjects studied at pre-university level and subjects they would be studying in their engineering course. The Bridge Course will help the students to have a smooth transition to the Engineering course. A sound grasp of the fundamentals of the engineering subjects will lay a strong foundation for the entire four-year programme.

Orientation Programme for Parents of New Entrants Held in the Campus

The Orientation Programme for the parents of the new entrants to the engineering stream was held in the Campus. Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary welcomed the parents and provided an overview of Sahyadri and its growth since inception. He addressed parents saying that college is just a dead infrastructure to which only the students can bring about a difference and make an impact.

He shared few of his personal views with parents that they need to develop a friendly relationship with their wards and also closely monitor every activity of theirs. He also advised the parents to make their ward self-dependent, and insisted that skill and personality development to be taught from home itself. He added that discipline and attitude of the student plays a vital role in shaping one's career. He provided an option to the parents of availing educational loans, in order to make their ward financially responsible. He gave additional details about the E-buzz, E-mails, E-magazine and Newsletter. He concluded by saying - “Do not educate the children to be rich. Educate them to be happy. So when they grow up, they will know the value of things, not the price”.

Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi, delivered the concluding remarks at the end of the program, by narrating live examples in connection to the students’ attitude. He placed the placement statistics and explained the code of conduct that every student has to follow in the campus.

Faculty Development Workshop Held for Faculty Members

A one-day Faculty Development Workshop was inaugurated by Dr. N. K. Vijayan Karippal, Principal, Expert PU College, Valachil, Mangalore & Consultant Educational Psychologist and Dr. R. S. Hiremath, President of the social enterprise Flexitron in the Campus.

Dr. R. S. Hiremath dwelt on the topic “Projects to Products”. He mooted the idea of introduction of innovation in the engineering curriculum. He elaborated on its implementation for 4-year undergraduate engineering course: identifying problems, developing “soft concept” at first year level, and in later years creating hard prototype and coming up with a final product. He presented several successful case studies and motivated the faculty to involve themselves in projects.

Dr. R. S. Hiremath is President of a social enterprise named Flexitron which is dedicated to design, manufacture and Frugal innovations of products in alternative energy, aids and appliances for the physically challenged and products for use by the poorest at the bottom of the human pyramid. He has over 300 innovations in varied fields like solar photovoltaic’s, wind energy, LED lighting, empowerment equipments for the rural population, textiles, khadi, ceramics, disability aids, silk, artisan equipment and tools .

He has been conferred with four national awards by the Government of India in the field of innovation, off the four awards three national awards are for the best innovations for the physically challenged.

Mr. Guimbaud Julien, Ms. Pignerol Chloe, and Mr. Gaitepaille Victor, pre-final year students of École des Mines d’Albi, France, who are currently doing their internships at Flexitron shared their experiences in identifying the problems in transporting goods from trucks to shops in crowded market places and coming up with a solution - developing an electric vehicle.

Dr. N. K. Vijayan’s workshop for the faculty members teaching first year students was on ‘Clarity to Connectivity, Classroom Control and Beyond.’ Through the various sessions and activities, he touched upon the various topics of Self-Clarity to Group Connectivity- Seven C’s to Conquer – Clarity, Communication, Control, Commitment, Challenge, Complexity and Connectivity, Discipline- Dealing with a Difference and Behaviour Management systems.

Dr. Vijayan Karippal is a highly sought-after teacher – trainer, innovative teacher, prolific writer and an acclaimed Consultant Educational Psychologist with an experience of two decades. He is a person with international exposure having conducted hundreds of training sessions and workshop all across the country and abroad.

He has three Master Degrees in Applied Psychology, Sociology and English Language and Literature to his credit. He secured the first rank in M.Ed from University of Calicut and has a Doctorate degree in Education from the same University. He is the founder Chairman of ‘ARCH’ (Action for the Right of Children), an organization for the protection of Child Rights.

Faculty and Student Present Poster at IEEE Madras Section Symposium

Mr. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Assistant Professor and Mr. Satish Karanth, Semester VI, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering presented a poster titled "A Novel Implementation of Distributed Antenna" at IEEE Madras Section Symposium.

During the symposium, Dr. Vidyalakshmi, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, presented on "Planar Antenna", Dr. S. Raghavan, Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, NIT, Trichy, presented on "Mobile Boardband System" and Dr. S. Joseph Gladwin, Chair, IEEE Antenna Propogations, Madras Chapter presented on "Electrical Properties of Dilectric".

Staff Member’s Achievements in Body Building Telecast on TV

A programme on the achievements in Body Building by Mr. Jagadish Poojary, staff member of the Department of Mathematics and trainer at Sahyadri multi-gymnasium will be telecast on “HEGIDE BADUKU” – a special weekly programme on Abbaka TV channel on Saturday 9.30 pm and also on V4 info channel on Sunday 8.00 pm. The repeat telecast can be watched every week in the month of July.

Shri Bhandary Constructions has sponsored team Formula Sahyadri, the SAE-SUPRA 2016 team of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management with an amount Rs.30,000/-. Mr Ananth Bhat, Mr. Jhon Prakash, Mr. Ramcharan, Mr. Santosh Bangera and Mr. Ravikumar, all part of Shri Bhandary Constructions conveyed their best wishes by recognizing the team’s effort and hard work in building Mangalore's first student version of a Formula One. Trustee, Mr. Devadas Hegde, played a pivotal role in bringing these sponsors and the team Formula Sahyadri expressed their gratitude to them.

Dr. U. M. Bhushi invited as resource person for the “Career Guidance Programme”

Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, was invited for the “Career Guidance Programme” as the resource person by Vikas Pre-University College. The programme was held at Besant Women’s College auditorium. Dr. Bhushi spoke to the gathering about engineering courses and enlightened them about the various options that students can opt for in the engineering field and successfully manage career development.

The focus of the career counselling programme was generally on issues such as career exploration, career change, personal career development and other career related issues in various fields, with interaction by many resource persons. Students and parents of Vikas PU College and students of various colleges were present and interacted with the resource persons.

Campus Recruitment Drives

TEK Systems-Oracle India Private Limited conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the engineering students of the 2016 batch in the Campus. Seven students have been shortlisted to attend a further round of interview.

Rakesh from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been selected by Krisam Automation Private Limited in the recently held pool campus recruitment drive at Sahyadri.

Chitharanjan M., M.Tech (CADS) Civil Engineering who was shortlisted by Vimal Anil Consultants, Mangaluru, during the core companies’ campus recruitment drive held in May at the Campus, has been recruited and joined the company in the first week of July.
