Inauguration of Coherent-Excimer Laser and a Seminar on Pulsed Laser Deposition

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management (SCEM) organized a seminar on Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) on the occasion of the inauguration of Coherent-Excimer Laser at Sahyadri Campus. The Chief Guest Dr. Burkhard Fechner and the Guest of Honor Dr. Lalit Kumar inaugurated the Excimer Laser. The seminar was organized by Center of Excellence in Nano-science & Technology (CENT) in association with the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Dr. Burkhard Fechner in his inaugural address spoke about the historical perspective of lasers and especially, the origin of Excimer lasers starting from the early effort in the development of Excimer Lasers at Lambda Physik Germany. He also talked about Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) other applications of Excimer Lasers.

Prof. Richard Pinto, Director, CENT, explained the genesis of PLD starting with the first publication of the growth of superconducting film using Excimer laser in 1987. He thanked Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, for funding the Excimer laser and also Coherent (Dr. Burkhard Fechner and Dr. Lalit Kumar) for co-sponsoring the Excimer laser. The total cost of the laser with special gases for operation is about Rs. 1 Crore. The Coherent-Excimer Laser Compex-Pro 201 is the only gas laser with high energy over 750mJ in the west coast of India excluding the institutions at Mumbai.

Pulsed Laser Deposition is a powerful technique for the growth of thin films of multi-component complex materials. Hence, the inauguration of Excimer laser will act as nucleus for CENT and the research effort on thin films and Nano-materials is to make rapid progress, especially with collaboration with neighboring institutions and industry partners.

Dr. Fechner received PhD in 1987 from University of Hannover, Germany, in "Laser Atomic Spectroscopy in High Electric and Magnetic fields". Dr. Lalit Kumar as a head of Laser Science Services (I) Pvt. Ltd represents over 30 of the leading laser manufacturers from all over the globe, covering a wide range of products which includes: scientific and industrial laser systems, spectroscopy and microscopy equipment and imaging systems.

Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, presided over the program. Prof. S. S Balakrishna, Vice Principal, Prof. Umashankar, Dean Academic, Dr. Rajesh Rai, HOD of Mechanical Engineering, A.J.I.E.T., Mangalore, faculty members of the institute and researchers from various institutes including Mangalore University were present during the program.

MBA students interview a Business Icon on the Success Story

As a field based learning during vacation, four of the MBA students Dhanya Shree, Prajwal Karkera, Sayona Joseph and Pharesh Salian interviewed Mr. Darshan Jain, one of the partners of ACE Promoters & Developers, a well-known construction company in Mangaluru which is engaged in building Residential Apartments and Commercials. They had an experience sharing session wherein our students were walked through the journey of Mr. Darshan Jain from being employed in a private bank to an Entrepreneur. During the course of the discussion, he induced them to be a Job creator rather than a Job seeker. Our students were taken on a tour of ACE Promoters & Developer’s upcoming projects and answered all queries they had regarding a Real Estate Business.

They were also invited to be a part of the company’s promotional activity headed by Mr. Karimbil Kannan Nair, Business Development Manager, ACE Promoters & Developers, so that they get a practical exposure to Marketing strategies carried out for the sale of their upcoming projects. Our students volunteered to join hands with ACE in their two-day promotional activity in one of the leading Banks of Mangalore. This gave an insight on how to identify a potential customer without wasting time and effort on the individuals who are not keen on doing business with them. Our students were enlightened on the various marketing as well as pricing strategies adopted by a construction industry. They were introduced to “Throw the Box Strategy” (Innovative & Creative marketing techniques) to approach potential customers. The two-day experience aided our students to initiate their own marketing strategies for their Start-Up in the near future.

ACE Promoters & Developers were delighted with the overwhelming collaborative effort in the promotional activity and gave away certificates for a commendable job during the two days along with a letter of appreciation to Sahyadri MBA for grooming the students and providing opportunities to acquire utmost learning from the situations, success and failure stories around them.
