Kargil Vijay Divas Celebrated in the Campus

The Department of Civil Engineering organized Kargil Vijay Divas - A Tribute to Martyrs. Major Lohith Suvarna, Retired Major, Indian Army was the chief guest of the function. Major Lohith Suvarna served the country in The Indian Army for a span of 30 years. In his keynote address, he shared his experience of the career that he had as an army man in the Indian Army and also his experience being a part of the Kargil War in the year 1999 fighting for the nation. Major Lohith Suvarna is the proud father of our student Ms Yashwitha Suvarna, Semester VII, Civil Engineering.

Rotarian Vikram Dutta, was the guest of honour for the function. He stressed on the importance of higher education of the present youth and also mentioned that it is the responsibility of every youngster to play a vital role in the development of the country.

Dr U M Bhushi, Principal, acknowledged the sacrifices of all the men who have served the country in the Indian Army and congratulated the Civil Engineering Department for organizing Kargil Vijay Divas. Prof Umashankar, Dean Academic and Prof Purushothama C T, HOD of the department were present on the occasion. Mr Varun, student of Semester VII, Civil Engineering coordinated the function.

Ashok Madaravally Director NASSCOM 10000 Startups Visits Sahyadri: Speaks on the Startup Scenario & Opportunities in India

Mr. Ashok Madaravally, 10000 Startups & Director NASSCOM visited the Campus and interacted with students of the various startups at the Sahyadri Entrepreneurship Cell.

The Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary welcomed and thanked Mr. Madaravally for taking time to visit our campus and spoke on the facilities provided by Sahyadri. In his introductory remarks he spoke about the opportunities provided by NASSCOM to startups through their 10000 startups. In his address to a packed audience, Mr. Ashok Madaravally gave insights into NASSCOM and the purpose of setting up the 10000 startups. He spoke about the power of India, the digital revolution, and the large potential and strengths of India, the opportunities available and how startups can tap into these opportunities. He threw light on the challenges for Indian startups and spoke about some of the deficiencies in Indian start-ups like poor communication and marketing skills, poor design skills, being more passionate and less based on customer requirement and not open to feedback.

He also spoke on the Startup India movement by the Government of India and the tremendous support for startups by the Karnataka Government like Idea2PoC with funding and grants for startups.

He highlighted that through its 10000 startups programme, how NASSCOM will give support to startups through the 400 events and the process of funding. He invited the startups to participate and exhibit their products at the NASSCOM Product Conclave as well as the various other workshops and technical events conducted by them across the country. He encouraged the students to make use of the opportunities provided and benefit for them.

The address was followed by a question and answer session.

In another session with the student entrepreneurs, he gave them valuable insights on how to make a startup successful. He stressed on the need to not only build a good product but to constantly innovate to the market needs. He emphasised the need for excellent communication skills and marketing. He encouraged the student entrepreneurs to research the market and be data driven, have a good mix of team, and to be passionate with reality checks and regular feedback. He gave them an insight into the various sources of funding and Government support. He cleared the doubts of the students on several issues during question hour.

Mr. Ashok Madaravally is super passionate about the startup and product eco-system. He has overall experience of 15 years in product and operations roles across large companies like Google and Hewlett Packard and startups. With a strong work ethic and a highly collaborative leadership style, Mr. Ashok Madaravally set up the first co-working space under the 10,000 Startups program in Bengaluru- the Startup Warehouse on Old Airport Road and has expanded the NASSCOM 10,000 Startup Warehouse to 8 other cities across India. The Startup Warehouse program currently stands at a collective office space of 120K Sq ft, 1,000+ seats, 140+ startups incubated, and over 50 startups that have raised capital and got customers through the program.

Bridge Course Concludes

The 18-day Bridge Course for the new entrants to the Engineering course drew to a close with a valedictory function. Mr. Johnson Tellis, Director, DTlabz, summarized the entire course to the audience. The student teams then gave presentations about robot building experience. They also gave their feedback about the course. Letters of Appreciation were distributed to all the second year students who were the mentors of DTlabz.

Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, presented a video on `Do Dare, Do Dream’. Dr. C K Manjunath, Professor of Humanities & Administrator gave the concluding remarks. A cultural program was organized on the occasion. Dr. U M Bhushi, Principal, Dr. B Umashankar, Dean Academics, Jacob Tellis, Chairman – Dtlabz, Mithra, HOD, Department of Mathematics, were present on the occasion.

144 students took part in the Bridge Course and have immensely benefitted from it. Topics such as communication skills, the success stories of the first year engineering students, written skills, Basic CAD and Basic Electronics were some sessions taken up during the course by DTlabz. The course included core subjects such as computer science, electronics and mechanical engineering. Students were taught concepts like Raspberry Pi, Python coding, Open CV for image processing and Android app building. Students used Raspberry Pi to code a robot with Python and Open CV, which could detect color by image processing and navigate through a Bluetooth app made by them. Students came across open source software which helped them in learning more concepts without any barriers. The mega event during the course was the students witnessing firsthand the arena built by DTlabz to experience the mega events conducted in IITs.

Team “Sahyadri Motorsports” clears Virtual Baja – 2016 Event

Team "Sahyadri Motorsports" successfully cleared the national level "VIRTUAL BAJA - 2016" contest held at Shri Vaishnav Vidyapeeth Vishwavidyalaya, Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The team is now eligible to participate in BAJA SAE INDIA – 2017 [decade edition] which is the final round. It was organized by SAE INDIA and around 412 teams participated from various engineering colleges across India.

Five members of the team: Bhavik Das [team captain], Jostal Rayan D’Souza, Devesh Dubey, Sudeep K., Pranav Padavu represented the college team in this event. The team is ranked 57th scoring 151.5 out of 200. The fabrication of the all- terrain vehicle will commence shortly.

SAE BAJA is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The SAE BAJA Series has grown to become a premier engineering design series for various university teams. Teams of students from different institutions all over the country, participate in this event of designing and building small off-road cars. All cars that are designed for this event have engines of the same specifications. The goal in SAE BAJA racing is to design, build and race off-road vehicles that can withstand the harshest elements of rough terrain. The vehicles used in Baja SAE racing are often similar in appearance to dune buggies.

There are multiple dynamic events, as well as an endurance race. The dynamic events include hill climbs, maneuverability event and suspension & traction events. Static events, such as written reports, presentations and design evaluations are provided by participating teams. This is when the teams are judged on ergonomics, functionality, and productivity of their cars; ensuring that the final placement of the team does not rest solely on the vehicle's performance but rather on a combination of static and dynamic events.

Two-day Workshop on VLSI Design Held in Sahyadri

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in association with M. S. Engineering College, Bangalore, conducted a two-day workshop on VLSI design using open source EDA. The workshop was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Cyril Prasanna Raj and Mr. Ravi Kumar. The Principal Dr U. M. Bhushi, Dean Academic Prof. B. S. Umashankar, Head of the department of ECE Dr. Jose Alex Mathew were present on the occasion.

VLSI design and SOC design are the two major areas that provide tremendous job and research opportunities for young engineers. In order to bridge the gap between industry and academia, universities have initiated this workshop for the benefit of students and faculty members by providing them the required facilities and manpower to get hands-on experience on use of VLSI design tool for design and implementation of multimillion gate digital circuits using open source EDA.

Deloitte Pool Campus Recruitment Drive

Deloitte conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for B.Sc. and BCA graduates of the computer science and information science stream. More than 100 students from the pool colleges were part of the recruitment process. Ms. Padmaja Pandey, Talent Acquisition, Deloitte accompanied by the panelists on the recruitment team was at the campus to facilitate the entire process.

The Semester II MBA results have been announced for the 2015-16 examination conducted by VTU. Reema B Salian has topped the department with 76.44% with Sayona A Joseph securing 75.33% and Sowjanya obtaining 74.89%. Out of 167 who appeared for the examination, twenty-one students obtained a distinction, ninety-four obtained a first class and thirty-three students obtained a second class bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 88.62%

The Semester IV MBA results have been announced for the 2015-16 examination conducted by VTU. Sindura H. has topped the department with 70.50% with Soumya securing 69.67% and Ajitha M. C. obtaining 69.42%. Out of 108 students who took the examination, thirty obtained a distinction, sixty-seven obtained a first class and two students obtained a second class bringing the overall percentage score of the department to 91.67%

Role of HR today and in the future: Zeeshan Ramlan of Infosys Addresses MBA Students

Mr. Zeeshan Ramlan, Lead HR, Infosys interacted with the final year HR specialization students and enlightened them on the role of HR today and in the future. He explained the huge gamut of HR role in today’s organization which encompasses role of a recruiter, partnering with other line managers, employee engagement, policy management and dealing with several key issues like attrition, performance management, CSR, compensation etc. He informed students about the various industries where HR aspirants can work and prosper. He beckoned students to develop certain skill sets which are a must to be a successful HR Manager. Few of the key skills mentioned were communication, ethics, counseling skills, concept clarity, ability to ability, creativity and innovation. The session ended with brief Q&A from students.

Zeeshan Ramlan is an MBA (HR) from Symbiosis Institute, Pune. He joined Infosys Limited in 2008, and was the Corporate HR for Bangalore Infosys for 3 years. He is currently the Lead HR for Infosys operations in Mangalore. Having completed almost 7 years with Infosys, Zeeshan has received more than 18 awards including the Most Popular HR Award in the year 2010 & also a Special Recognition award conferred by Kris Gopalakrishna (ex CEO of Infosys) for his contributions in promoting culture and people engagement at Infosys.

SSTH Team Makes Visits to Various PU Colleges & High Schools

St. Agnes Girls’ High School

The First and Second visit of the SSTH (Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt) team was made to St. Agnes Girls’ High School, Bendoorwell, Mangalore. Mrs. Nikhitha C and Mrs. Akshatha D, Assistant Professors of Electronics and Communication Department were accompanied by a team comprising of Mr. Johnson Tellis, Ms. Shreya M, Mr. Sagar of DTlabz who demonstrated the Quadcopter and smart helmet with its features. Nearly seventy students enthusiastically interacted with the SSTH team and they showed great interest to participate in upcoming SSTH events.

Prestige International School

The SSTH (Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt) team made their second visit to Prestige International School. Faculty members Mr. Rakshith Shetty and Mr. Vikas G, along with Mr. Johnson Tellis and Mr. Sujan from DTlabz were warmly welcomed by Mrs. Deepaly Shenoy, PRO of Prestige International School. There were around 180 students from class 8, 9 & 10 who actively involved themselves in the interaction session. The students are eager to participate in the upcoming SSTH event.

Kunil High School and Kunil PU College

Faculty members, Mr. Praveen Konda and Mr. Dileepkumar U. accompanied by a team comprising Mr. Navajith, Mr. Alister, Ms. Shreya and Ms. Deepa of DTlabz made their second SSTH (Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt) visit to Kunil High School and Kunil PU College, Nattikallu , Mangalore. The team demonstrated the smart helmet with its features to an enthusiastic student crowd of 180 high school and 60 PU students who at the end of the interaction were eager to take part in the upcoming SSTH competitions.

Sharada PU College

The SSTH team made two visits to Sharada PU College, Kodialbail. Ms. Mamatha Shetty and Ms. Nisha, faculty members accompanied by a team comprising of Mr. Johnson Tellis, Mr. John Nikhil, Mr. Ram Kishore of DTlabz demonstrated the working of the Quadcopter and Bluetooth controlled bot to students. Nearly 250 students enthusiastically interacted with SSTH team and showed great interest to participate in upcoming SSTH events.

S.R.P.U. College

Faculty members, Mr.Suhas and Mr. Vaishak NL. accompanied by Mr. Srujan from DTlabz made their second SSTH (Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt) visit to S.R.P.U. College, Ramakunja, Uppinangadi. The team demonstrated the different projects to pre-university students. At the end of the session students interacted with the SSTH team.

Expert PU College

The SSTH team made a visit to Expert PU, Valachil. Mr. Bharath Bhushan, faculty member accompanied by a team comprising of Mr. Johnson Tellis, Ms. Monisha, Mr. Ram Kishore and Ms. Riya of DTlabz demonstrated the working of the Quadcopter and Bluetooth controlled bot to students. Nearly 250 students enthusiastically interacted with SSTH team and showed great interest to participate in upcoming SSTH events.

Technical-cum-Aptitude Training Concludes

A four-day Technical- cum-Aptitude training for the students of Semester VII was conducted in the campus by 10 Seconds.

MBA Student Recruited by IBM

Ms. Megha Shetty, second year MBA student has been recruited by IBM, Bangalore, as a Procurement Specialist. Her profile involves sourcing vendors for the organization and has been deployed in the Procurement Department of the company.

MBA Faculty Member Appointed on Board of Studies

Mr. Ramesh K G, Assistant Professor SG, Department of Business Administration has been appointed as member of the Board of Studies in the Department of Business Management, Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College (Autonomous), Ujire for a period of 2 years.

KMAT 2016 Held in Sahyadri

Karnataka Management Aptitude Test (KMAT) 2016 conducted by Karnataka Private Post Graduate Colleges Association (KPPGCA) was held at Sahyadri Campus for students aspiring to get into MBA & MCA courses. Around 490 students from various parts of the state appeared for the exam. KMAT is the gateway to more than 169 + AICTE-approved University-affiliated Colleges in Karnataka. KMAT 2016 is an All India exam that is held in more than 10 cities all across the country and is open to candidates from all parts of India and abroad. Sahyadri College was chosen as one of the centers to host the KMAT 2016 exams.
