Delegates from NITI Aayog along with Registrar of Mangalore University visited Sahyadri Delegates from NITI Aayog along with Registrar of Mangalore University visited Sahyadri Mr. Ratan P Watal, Principal Adviser (Social Sector), NITI Aayog and also the Member Secretary, Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister (EAC-PM); Mr. B N Satpathy, Senior Consultant, EAC-PM, NITI Aayog; Mr. K Rajeshwar Rao, Representative, NITI Aayog along with Prof. B S Nagendra Prakash, Registrar & Dr. B H Shekar from the Mangalore University visited Sahyadri and interacted with the Management and Faculty.

Mr. Ratan P Watal, a retired IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre was a Former Finance Secretary. While addressing the gathering, Mr. Watal gave a glimpse of the Main office, the Chairperson, its members, the functions and the role of NITI, Aayog. He expressed his intensions to outreach with Universities and students thereby taking forward the whole agenda of cashless economy. He has learnt of the rich tradition of Banking in Mangalore and proposes that the Banking institutions, academic institutions along with their students should get to field, find the problems and also get to the solutions to the problems related to Cashless Economy. Before closing his speech, he narrated a story which brought out the essence of ‘Attitude’ that makes a lot of difference in the way we view things/challenges. He urged the gathering to inspire self to find solutions to the downtrodden people that in return give a sense of accomplishment.

He also said that the Job Market these days is tough; however there is enough scope for innovation which shall overcome this challenge. He appreciated Sahyadri for the amazing work it has put in for its uniqueness and was sure that Sahyadri would soon gain lot of prominence in the years to come.

Prof. B S Nagendra Prakash expressed how comfortable he felt as at home visiting Sahyadri since he is from the Engineering background. He also mentioned about his association with Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-Research & Consultancy of Sahyadri. He said that - World is no more a far of place as there is more accessibility and availability of information. He appreciated the Management of Sahyadri for its involvement in the in-house mechanism for individuality and very few institutions do that. He said that within the framework of Mangalore University, Sahyadri and the mentorship of NITI Aayog we can make a difference to the society by working on time bound initiatives. He also expressed his support to forming the State-of-the-Art Research facility in Sahyadri Campus and strengthen the bondage by modulating research programmes and activities in our campus.

Sahyadri is graced by the visit of Dr. Rajesh Shenava, Nephrologist, Houston, USA. Sahyadri campus nestled on the banks of river Nethravathi has been graced by the visits of several distinguished personalities in addition to nature lovers ever so often. This time too Sahyadri had the honor of hosting Dr. Rajesh Shenava who is a Nephrologist based in Houston, Texas, USA and is currently affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital System and a former faculty at LSU-NOLA. He received his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, trained in Sydney, Australia and has been in practice for more than two decades.

Dr. Shenava and Mr. Bhandary, Chairman visited the various departments of Sahyadri and their respective innovative centers and have taken time to interact with students of various disciplines and in addition to be actively participating with Mr. Sachin Ganesh, at the Augmented & Virtual Reality Lab in relation to its application in the field of medical and patient education. Dr. Shenava was impressed with the student-centric initiatives undertaken by the college in addition to the dedication of the staff and students towards conserving our eco system, the involvement to reach out the adopted villages and steps taken to bring concrete changes in their lives and health.

Dr. Shenava spent the day on Sahyadri campus and commented, “The dedication, enthusiasm and insight taken by Shri. Manjunath Bhandary is really inspiring. The great achievements taken in such a short span and his commitment towards betterment of society and have the students excel not just in their curriculum, but in life.”

Dr. Shenava stated that Mr. Bhandary deserves to be congratulated for his hard work, honesty, and utmost dedication to deliver the very best for team Sahyadri and conveyed his wishes for a promising future.

Seven-Day AICTE sponsored FDP on Student Induction Concludes The Seven-Day AICTE sponsored Faculty Development Programme on ‘Student Induction’ which began on 16th July, 2018 concluded on 22nd of July, 2018. The workshop was attended by 40 faculty members from various engineering colleges of Karnataka. This workshop was organized to equip the faculty with the knowledge base and skill that is necessary in order to conduct the mandatory Twenty One-Day Student’s Induction Programme on universal human values. Sahyadri had the honour of hosting this programme on behalf of AICTE. The Valedictory programme was graced by the presence of Dr. N H Siddalingaswamy, Director, E-Governance Cell of AICTE as the Chief Guest. Prof. Shreenath, Chief Operating Officer of Sahyadri presented the brief report of the 7-day event after which the delegates shared their opinion and feedback of the programme. They appreciated the intentions of the training and the manner in which it was organized by Sahyadri. While addressing the gathering, Dr. N H Siddalingaswamy expressed his happiness about the success of the training programme. He urged each one to be extraordinary teachers with extra efforts. He also explained about the various schemes that AICTE has for the faculty who wish to pursue research and publications. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal in his presidential address congratulated the delegates for the successful completion of the FDP.

The Orientation Programme was inaugurated by Mr. K Jayaraj Rai, Chairman, SRCCS. In his inaugural address, Mr. Rai informed the participants about the importance of the programme in building a successful career. He thanked the MBA Department for taking up the initiative to conduct the programme. Mr. Jagannath Chowta, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation was the Chief Guest. He emphasised the importance of co-operative society for the benefit of its members. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA Department presided over the function and thanked the management of SRCCS for providing the opportunity to conduct the Orientation Programme.

This orientation programme is in continuation of the recruitment process of Sri Ramakrishna Credit Co-operative Society handled by the Department of Business Administration which included the screening of prospective candidates, issuing hall ticket, question paper setting, conducting of recruitment test, evaluation of papers and shortlisting candidates.

Road Map to Civil Engineering Dr. Premanand Shenoy welcomed the students of 2nd year Civil Engineering. He explained the role of civil engineers in the present world. He stressed on the importance of creativity and innovation for a successful journey in the field of Civil Engineering. Importance of civil engineering in various projects in construction field was also spoken about. He also discussed the innovation in civil field i.e new generation buildings, finger print building, rotating building, kingdom tower- Jeddah, intelligent structures with smart materials having sensors, communicators, analysers, activators etc. He gave a brief outlook about modern construction equipments and latest technology in civil engineering which is called as digital civil engineering. Finally, he concluded with a note saying “Think beyond common sense and learn beyond curriculum”. Further, Mr. Sunil Kumar Rai, Head of the Department introduced all the faculty members of the civil department.

Mechanical Engineering students The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an Orientation Programme for III Semester students of Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Mahesh B. Davangeri, Head of the Department gave an overview of the department.

The event was graced by Prof. S SBalakrishna, Vice-Principal, Dr Rajesh, Dean (Academics) and Prof Ravichandra R. Dean (Industry connect). Speaking on the occasion, Prof. S.S. Balakrishna congratulated the students for selecting a branch as diverse as mechanical engineering. Dr Rajesh spoke on the role of mechanical engineers in the society and advised the students to harness necessary skills. Prof Ravichandra enthralled the gathering by his motivational speech and called on the students to accept challenges that would help them to develop their personality.

The event also saw an interactive session by Mr Sunder, CEO Caliper Engineering and Labs Pvt Ltd. Speaking on the occasion Mr Sunder gave a global outlook and the opportunities available for mechanical engineers. He also called on students to develop skills in niche areas which would make them global leaders.

The event would span over the next four days which will include sessions from various vertical heads with the aim of providing necessary exposure to the third semester students.

OOrientation for Electronics & Communication Engineering Students rientation for Electronics & Communication Engineering Students Orientation program for Third Semester students of Electronics & Communication Engineering was organized by the Department of Electronics & Communication. Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head of the Department gave an overview of the department.

Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Director, Strategic Planning addressed the gathering. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Bhushi conveyed the importance of orientation program and also advised the students that by taking small steps and being focused in life they can reach the goal. Dr. Ashwath Rao highlighted the department strengths and opportunities the students have in electronics and communication field. A glimpse of the entire department in areas of expertise of faculty members, purpose of verticals and industry connected courses offered were presented. The students were advised to make use of the facilities to the maximum which will help them to fetch a placement offer in the core area they are interested.

A brief introduction regarding Communication viz. types of communication and applications of communication was presented by faculties belonging to Communication, Control System and IOT Vertical. Evolution of communication technologies was enlightened to the students. A talk on Internet of things (IOT), architecture and its applications was delivered. Types of antennas along with its applications such as mobile communication, satellite communication and working of RADAR system were delivered.

A talk on Introduction to Embedded Systems, Types of Real Time Embedded Systems, Smart Systems, Smart home appliances, microprocessor and microcontrollers & its applications was presented by Faculties belonging to Embedded System & Sensor systems vertical. The team emphasized importance of programming language and software.

Infosys Hackathon Contest

Infosys Hackathon Contest Infosys HackwithInfy Round 2 was held at Sahyadri. A total of 11 students were shortlisted to move up to the round 2 of the contest. It was an online challenge of 3 hours, containing 3 problem statements to be solved within the time frame.

Top 100 finalists who clear Round 2 will get an opportunity to compete in the Grand Finale at Infosys Pune and win a pre-placement interview (PPI) for the Power Programmer role. The next top 500 finalists will get a pre-placement interview (PPI) for the Systems Engineer role.

Student Counsellor invited as a Resource Person for the Regional Level NSS Leadership Camp Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor was invited by Mangalore University - NSS division as a Resource Person for the Annual Regional Level NSS Leadership and RD Selection Camp organized at Mangalore University Campus, Konaje . He conducted a session on “Stress Response and Relief” for a total of 350 undergraduate students of NSS who had attended the programme from all the affiliated colleges of Mangalore University. Mr. Ankith S. Kumar demonstrated various simple techniques of stress relief such as 4-7-5 breathing techniques, touch therapy, aromatherapy, colour therapy, sound and music therapy and Dance/Movement therapy.

Sahyadrians win at Verbattle -2018 Senior division Mr. Oliver Sujith Bangera, a student of Mechanical Engineering, and Ms. Shibani Pinto of Computer Science & Engineering, both from the Third Semester, won at the Prelims round of Verbattle -2018, Senior Division held at the CBCC Golden Jubilee Hall. They have been selected for the Second round from among the 30 teams that participated in the Skirmish round. They will be participating in the second round of Verbattle -2018 to be held in the month of August at Bengaluru.

Dean-Placement-attends-NASSCOM-HR-Summit-at-Chennai. Prof. Rashmi Bhandary, Dean Placement has been a part of the HR Summit 2018 organized by NASSCOM, India at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai - a summit which has brought together leading experts and visionaries from the HR World.

The formal opening of the conference was held with an inaugural act. The agenda for the event was very well shaped. It included some interesting sessions engaged by some amazing speakers. Digital and strategic themes were covered in the sessions. Dr. Suchit is currently working as Program Manager Entrepreneurship at C- CAMP Bangalore. Prior to this, he was working with Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services (KBITS), Government of Karnataka for envisaging Biotechnology incubation centres across the state. Besides, he has also worked at Nuziveedu Seeds, Biocon and Mahyco.

Dr. Suchit gave a presentation of Grants for Startup in the field of Biotechnology. He also emphasized on Mentoring, Bridging gap between market and full proof concepts.

Three-Day Orientation Course in Values Education for Faculty at RIMSE, Mysore

The Inaugural Ceremony of Three-Day Orientation Course in Values Education (26-28 July 2018) for the faculty was held at Ramakrishna Institute of Moral & Spiritual Education (RIMSE), Mysore.  A total of 30 faculty members are currently undergoing this course. The event was inaugurated by Swami Maheshathmanandji, Correspondent, RIMSE, Mysore and Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal.

In his inaugural address, Swamiji encouraged the faculty team by stating that an ordinary person cannot be a teacher and it requires periodical grooming so that they can contribute to the excellence of the college. Prof. S S Balakrishna while addressing the participants reiterated that AICTE has also recommended introducing 'Human Values' in the course curriculum.  Hence Sahyadri has thought in advance about this initiative to be on par with the requirement.

The first session of Day One was facilitated by Swami Ishtanathanandji on 'Education for Character'.  He highlighted the meaning of Education as opined by Swami Vivekananda - It is the blend of Western Science with the Indian Values and Spirituality.

The second session was conducted by Mr. M S Raghu on 'Effective Teaching'. He emphasized on concepts like Generosity Gene vs. Jealousy Gene, Creating own weather for the students and also on the importance of sharing contemporary stories with students.

The third session was on 'Constitutional Values' by Prof. Suresh Kumar followed by showing motivational videos to inspire the participants of their role as teachers.
