TEDxSCEM 2019 – “How Unpredictable Are You?”

TEDxSCEM 2019 – “How Unpredictable Are You?” Sahyadri hosted its very first TEDxSCEM on July 28th’19, Sunday, an event organized under the banner of TEDx. The programme had a combination of 8 speakers and various cultural performances. It saw participation from 70 enthusiasts ranging in the age group from 16 to 85.

Gist of the Talks:
Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Principal Policy Officer United Nations Mr. Swastik Padma, Young Scientist and Innovator • Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Principal Policy Officer United Nations, spoke on Entrepreneurship Domain and explained about the new trends and developments in the economy
• Mr. Swastik Padma, Young Scientist and Innovator from Puttur, spoke on Technical Domain and shared his journey from a small village of Puttur to getting a minor Planet named after him
Ms. Kavitha Mishra, an Agriculturist known for her innovative Agricultural techniquesMs. Dhanya Ravi, popularly known as the “Glass Woman” • Ms. Kavitha Mishra, an Agriculturist known for her innovative Agricultural techniques, encouraged youth to develop interest in farming and gave inputs on how one can make farming a profitable one
• Ms. Dhanya Ravi, popularly known as the “Glass Woman” with more than 300 fractures in her body, inspired the audience with her remarkable stories on how she overcame all odds to lead a happy life
Ms. Karishma Arora, All India CBSC Topper and a Classical DancerDr. Rohan Chandragatti, Senior Consultant-Dept. of Oncology • Ms. Karishma Arora, All India CBSC Topper and a Classical Dancer, entertained the audience by demonstrating the Power of Dance and its benefits to the individuals
• Dr. Rohan Chandragatti, Senior Consultant-Dept. of Oncology, Mangalore Institute of Oncology, spoke on the unpredictable nature of Cancer and how one can cope up with this dreadful disease
Brigadier I N Rai, Army Veteran Mr. Ankith S Kumar, a Behavioural Scientist and Psycho-Social Counsellor • Brigadier I N Rai, Army Veteran, with his talk on “A soldier you don’t know” filled the audience with emotions of pride, joy and at the same time with sadness quoting the stories of the unsung heroes of India who sacrifice everything to the one thing – Motherland
• Mr. Ankith S Kumar, a Behavioural Scientist and Psycho-Social Counsellor at Sahyadri, motivated the audience to find happiness in small achievements of their everyday life and explained how emotions influence them and their surroundings
The attendees were given various takeaways & goodies as souvenirs of the event.

A special mention about Basavarajeshwari Ambi from 2nd Year Dept. of Information Science & Engineering and Srujan U from 2nd Year Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering who worked collaboratively since the last 7 months to procure the TEDx License to organize a TEDx event in the campus until they received a go-ahead from the approving authority at TEDx. The event was executed by these 2 coordinators along with their enthusiastic team of 30 volunteers.

2 LLP’s of Sahyadri among the 100 Start-ups declared as Winners by GOK at ELEVATE 2019 held in Bengaluru

2 LLP’s of Sahyadri among the 100 Start-ups declared as Winners by GOK at ELEVATE 2019 held in Bengaluru The finals of Elevate 2019, India’s first comprehensive entrepreneurship platform of the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Govt. of Karnataka was held on 30th July’19. A total of 270 start-ups, which made it to the finals after multicity pitching in Mysore, Mangalore, Kalburgi, Belagavi and Bengaluru had an eight-minute round of pitching in the finals, vying for funding, mentorship and a chance to scale up their business ideas. Start-up finalists pitched to respective panels of jury members in IT/ITES, Medtech, Agri/Biotech, Cleantech, AVGC, ESDM, Kannada, Culture and tourism, AVGC Aerospace and Aviation. 100 winners out of 270 start-ups have been selected based on the recommendations of the grand jury and approved by the Elevate Steering Committee.

Winners:
  • Samarpan Sahyadri Tech LLP with Project named – “AGV/AMR LIDAR Navigation Kit”
  • Utkarsh Sahyadri Tech LLP with Project named “ISENSE human activity measurement system integrated with sensor technology”
These projects were incubated at K-Tech NAIN Centre (New Age Incubation Network), Dept of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka. In addition to these 2 Winning Projects, 3 other projects of Sahyadri emerged as Runners-Up:
  • Samanvaya Sahyadri Tech LLP with Project named “Soilless Agriculture- Hydroculture”
  • Abhimaan Sahyadri Tech LLP with Project named “Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)”
  • Project: “Smart Gate Aid”
Mr. T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, Chief Secretary Govt. of Karnataka; Mr. Gaurav Gupta, Principal Secretary, Department of IT, BT and S&T, Govt. of Karnataka; Mr. Prashant Kumar Mishra, MD, KITS, Govt. of Karnataka were present during the Valedictory Ceremony of Elevate 2019.

Director-MBA visits Australia for Foreign collaborationDirector-MBA visits Australia for Foreign collaboration Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA visited the Deakin University, Australia for talks on collaboration in terms of Student & Faculty exchange and Research. She had discussions with Prof. Alex Newman, Associate Dean-International, Faculty of Business and Law and Mr. Mathew Cameron, Senior International Officer, Deakin Business School at the Melbourne Burwood campus. The discussions revolved around students and faculty exchange programme. The proposal was for a year of study in India and a year in Australia and credit programs for different specializations.

She also visited Swinburne Institute of Technology, Melbourne and had discussions with Prof. De-Anne Richards, Director- International education Partnership and Dr. Doan Nguyen, Academic Director Engagement, Faculty of Business and Law at the Hawthorne Melbourne campus. Efforts are on to collaborate with the engineering streams in terms of the future skills.

MBA Faculty deputed for a Train the Trainers (T3) One-Week IBM Workshop on “Data Analytics” organized by Mangalore University MBA Faculty deputed for a Train the Trainers (T3) One-Week IBM Workshop on “Data Analytics” organized by Mangalore University Prof. Girish M and Prof. Sushma V from the Dept. of Business Administration-MBA were deputed for a Train the Trainers (T3) One-Week IBM workshop on Data Analytics during 22nd to 27th July’19 organized in collaboration with Mangalore University. The main objective of the workshop was to create a pool of Experts ready to take up Future Trainings on Data Analytics and also mentor the Mangalore University Incubation Centre (MUIC). The Workshop focussed on topics related to Business Intelligence Concepts, Knowledge of Dashboards, Reports & Metrics, Concepts of Big Data and its characteristics and also Hands-On Training on Tableau, a Data visualization tool.

Orientation Programme for Third Semester students of Electronics & Communication Engineering  Orientation Programme for Third Semester students of Electronics & Communication Engineering On Day 3 i.e., 27th July’19, the Orientation programme for the Third Semester students of Electronics & Communication Engineering concluded with the Laboratory visit where in students had a session on the importance of academic labs which will be a part of their course, connectivity with not only theory and practicality but also one lab to another lab.

During the visit, Basic theory, Equipments used, List of experiments, Do’s & Don’ts, Safety measures and Applications of each laboratory were explained by the faculty members.

Campus Recruitment Drive - Indian Navy  Campus Recruitment Drive - Indian Navy Indian Navy visited Sahyadri on 29th July'19 to conduct a pool campus recruitment drive for the Final Year Engineering Students under University Entry Scheme. A total of 37 students have participated in the drive.

CDR V Jagan Mohan accompanied by Lt CDR Sivaprasad from Indian Navy was at the campus to facilitate the process. The results are awaited.

Two-Week AICTE Model Student Induction Programme commenced for the new batch of engineering students effective 1st Aug’19. The programme aims at familiarizing students to the Sahyadri Culture and Environment and includes sessions on Universal Human Values, Team Building, Group Living, Health and Safety, Yoga and Exercise, Sports Activities, Creative arts, Drama and Theatre, Life Skills, Soft Skills, Relationships Values and so on.

The programme continued with an interactive session on ‘Why Induction Programme?’ by the Vice-Principal Prof. S S Balakrishna. The Deans and Heads of various departments introduced themselves and extended a warm welcome to the fresher’s. The students were then divided into three batches for further sessions facilitated by Prof. Manjunatha Kamath, Prof. Samarth Shenoy, Prof. Prashanth Rao and Mr. Ankith S Kumar. Induction will be continued till 14th of August 2019.

“How to Achieve Unprecedented Success in the Tech Domain” - Guest lecture by Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Principal Policy Officer, United Nations, New York Mr. Siddharth Rajhans is a Harvard educated first generation Entrepreneur. Currently, he is a Principal Policy Officer working on sustainable development goals format of the United Nations. In order to empower the students with contemporary skills and motivational ideas that will help them give their 100% in their respective domains, a session including tech and management related information centred on start-up disruption was held on 29th July’19.

The following were the highlights of the session
  • Urged the students to work on more of paper journals to expand their knowledge of their respective domain
  • Encouraged them to focus on problems present at local level and find solutions for the same thereby igniting the idea of empathetic engineering and also adoption of campus start-up culture.
  • Stood by the idea of learning and adopting the newer programming languages rather than the traditional languages.
  • Shed light on the technological super power of the next decade - AR/VR, AI, Big Data, Machine Learning, Deep Learning.
  • Shared experience about his start-up –“Spacify”

Mr. Pankaj Muthe, Academic Program Manager – Asia Pacific at Qlik, facilitated a Webinar for the MBA Faculty with inputs on an enriching journey of Data Analytics. As ‘Analytics’ is one the Top Skills identified by the Governing authorities in Education for the future of students, this session gave insight into the various freely available resources and programmes on Data Analytics on Qlik and also Navigation of resources on Qlik forum. He even shared light on Qlik as a company. He urged faculty to prepare students for the role of a ‘Business Analyst’ which is in high demand.

Sixth & Seventh batch of Parent Interaction of new entrants to the Engineering stream 2019 Interaction session for the parents of new entrants to the engineering stream was held in the campus in two batches. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman placed before the parents a picture of the present scenario in engineering colleges. In order to boost the quality of education, AICTE has come up with good initiatives like Future Skills and many other initiatives, he stated. In keeping with the AICTE norms, Sahyadri offers technical skills where the students are exposed to internship programs, latest technology, and industry activities.

Students are also offered a platform to compete in various national and international events. In order to make the students realize the true essence of an engineer, visits to rehabilitation centres are organized so as to establish Social & Emotional Connect.

The chairman stressed on the responsibility of the parents towards their children and urged them to:
• Stimulate their children to utilize the facilities available in the campus and learn creative skills.
• Motivate your child
• To ignite in their children a spark of responsibility towards their family and the society.
• To share their own experiences of life with their child.
• To make their children self-dependent.
Speaking about the company expectations, Mr. Bhandary stated that the companies expect aptitude, attitude, good exposure, project based learning, interactive, communication and interactive skills from its employees.

Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his address, emphasised on the attendance criteria as per VTU norms and requested parents to monitor their child’s performance and attendance.

Second Session on Future Skills - AR/VR/MR and Social Mobile Sahyadri Future Skills - AR/VR/MR and Social Mobile organized its second session on 27 July, 2019. The session was engraved on the topic “Exploring Augmented Reality through Mobile Applications”, with the intent of up-skilling the staffs of Sahyadri. Prof. Pooja N S, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering facilitated the session by illustrating the mobile application - “HP Reveal” and its features giving an insight on the concepts of Augmented Reality deployed in it. The session was then followed by a group discussion on “Augmented Reality”. A total of 4 groups were framed and the groups were assigned to deliver a talk as a yield of their discussion.

Orientation Programme for Third Semester Civil Engineering Concludes The Department of Civil Engineering organized a Three-Day orientation programme for the students of third semester Civil Engineering. Dr. Nalini E Rebello, Head of Department of Civil Engineering introduced the Department to the students and stressed about the code of conduct & discipline to be followed by every student of the Department. Dr. Azhar Shaikh, Dept. of Business Administration-MBA addressed the students about positive attitude that one must possess for their betterment in life and career.

An alumni interaction was organized in which the students were addressed by three of Sahyadri’s distinguished alumni - Er. Chinmay Bharan, Site Engineer, Sriram Greenfields, Bengaluru; Er. Preksha Thej, CADD Engineer, CADD Centre, Mangaluru and Er. Deekshith Shetty, MD of Poornaprajna Constructions, Mangaluru. They motivated the students and spoke about the various challenges in the field of Civil Engineering and also shared various options to carry out higher studies in Indian & Foreign Universities.

MBA Alumna wins “The Best MSF Award 2018, PAN India” at Vogue Clothing Ms. Harshitha Rai (MBA Batch 2015-17), Training Manager at Vogue Clothing, MSF of Levi Strauss & Co has been awarded “The Best MSF Award 2018, PAN India” during the recent Rewards & Recognition Programme held in their organization. She has a total of 2 years & 3 months of experience at this company, handling the training requirements of 10 stores in Karnataka. This award was bestowed on her as the Training impacted the overall growth of business; Performance has been consistent, excellent adherence over SOP and has used Creative methods in dealing with any situation.

As an alumna of Sahyadri, Harshitha has been actively engaged with the institute by providing internship opportunities to her juniors and also assisting in their placements.
