Mrs. Rajalaxmi B. Joshy of Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple Visits Sahyadri

Mrs. Rajalaxmi B. Joshy of Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple visited the Campus. She was felicitated by Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman and she gave him her blessings. She invited all the staff members of Sahyadri to visit Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple.

Horanadu is located in the picturesque surroundings of Western Ghats of Karnataka. Horanadu is 100 kms south-west of Chikmagalur, located in the midst of thick forests and valleys.

Horanadu is a place of enchanting natural scenery; the ancient temple of Goddess Annapoorneshwari here has been restored and renamed as the Adi-Shaktyatmaka Shree Annapoorneshwari.

Students Mentored for INTEL ISEF

Students of various schools in the region visited the Campus with the aim of being mentored towards 2016 INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The students were guided on their projects by Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman and Prof. Dayanand Shetty, Director (STEP).

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. More than 1,700 high school students from over 70 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for more than $5 million in prizes.

Today, millions of students worldwide compete each year in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in SSP-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF. Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctoral level scientists review and judge their work.

Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights: Significance for Academia in Business & Research

The Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore in association with Mangalore University and Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), Govt. of Karnataka, organized a one-day workshop on Intellectual Property Rights: Significance for Academia in Business & Research in the Campus. This event was conducted with an objective to create awareness on IPR related issues in general and more specifically on educating the participants about the value and protection of IPR. Dr. Joseph Gonsalves, the Principal of St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru was the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address, he provided an insight into the status of IP in our country and stressed on the importance of managing it. Ms. Prabhavathi, the Co-ordinator of the IP cell, VTPC, gave an insight into the various Intellectual Property related issues in our country and the benefits that the participants shall be reaping from this program. In his presidential remarks, the Chairman of Bhandary foundation, Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, shared his personal observations and experiences of realizing the importance of IP and encouraged the audience to make the best use of this workshop. Vice-Principal of the Institute Dr. A. J. Antony welcomed the gathering. Dr. A .P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Prof. Divya Prabhu P. of the department. Mr. V. Raghuram, Consultant, Technology and IP Commercialization and Dr. Rama Murthy, Head – IPR Centre for Emerging Technologies, Jain University, Bangalore, were the key resource persons for the event. About 55 faculty members and researchers working in management institutes/engineering colleges participated in this workshop.

SPSS (Student Project Support Scheme) project work is published as a Research paper titled "A review on various state of art technique to recognize occluded face images" in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The Research paper is authored by Ms. Sheethal K. Rao and co-authored by Ms. Patel Haniben, Ms. Prajna, Mr. Pratheek, Mr. Rakshan V. The SPSS project and the Research paper were guided by Mr. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering.



Four-day Faculty Development Programme for Civil Engineers Gets Underway

The four-day Faculty Development Programme on “Holistic View to Construction Practice” was inaugurated by Dr. G. Srinikethan, Dean-Academic and Professor of Chemical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal in the Campus. Dr. M. M. Achar, Associate Vice-President, India International Infrastructure Engineers (IIIIE) Ltd., Bengaluru, was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, presided over the inaugural session.

The FDP has been organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, in association with VTU, Belagavi. Various sessions were held throughout the day. Dr. M. M. Achar of IIIE Ltd., Bengaluru, spoke on "Semi-Continuous Bridges - An overview of Design and Construction Aspects of Post-Tensioned Stitched Girder Bridges," which was followed by a session engaged by Mr. Nagesh P., Regional Technical Head, Karnataka-South, Ultratech Cement on "Optimising Mix Proportion in Construction."

Post lunch, Mr. Nagesh P. continued his talk and spoke about “Formwork and Scaffolding Design,” followed by a session by Dr. Ramesh S. Manoli, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Global Academy of Technology, Bengaluru on “Construction Practices in Earthquake Prone Areas.”

Various sessions with regard to civil engineering, the construction industry and good construction practices will be engaged by resource persons over the next three days.

Day-2 & 3 of FDP: A Holistic View to Construction Practice

Various sessions were engaged by experts in the field of civil engineering from academia and industry on Day-2 of the Faculty Development Programme. Dr. A. V. Pradeep Kumar, Prof. & Head, Department of Civil Engineering, JNNC, Shimoga, presented his topic on "Alternate Building Construction Practices." Mr. Nagesh P., Regional Technical Head, Karnataka- South, Ultratech-Cement gave a technical talk on "Extreme Weather Construction."

Post lunch, Mr. Anil Baliga, Consultant, Concrete Solution, Mangaluru, spoke on “Construction Chemicals Overview,” and Mr. K. B. Keerthan Kumar, Sr. Manager Market Development (Chemicals), MCF, spoke on “Good Construction Practices.”

Day-3 saw participants going on a technical visit to the Ultratech ready mix concrete plant and NMPT (New Mangalore Port Trust) as part of the Faculty Development Programme. The objective of this industrial visit was to link the theoretical and practical approaches of construction practices learning they received during the programme. Various aspects relating to design and constructions of berths were also dealt with during the technical visit.

Chairman Welcomes Faculty Members

Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary welcomed the newly joined faculty members of the institute and shared a few of his experiences. He stressed upon the need for enhancement of knowledge through attending workshops, publishing papers and journals. He explained clearly the difference between the teaching and lecturing process and also the difference between a job and a profession. He stressed upon the importance of having a road map in life to reach the desired destination. He mentioned that the engineers must have a very clear vision and they should create job opportunities for others. He also said that the up gradation of technical, analytical and aptitude skill is essential and is the need of the hour. Finally he said that a hundred percent commitment is most important to achieve perfection in any profession.

Ms. Ashwini Kotekar V. of the Department of MCA, Brenet Loraine Aarons and Avinash M.S. of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering passed out students of the College, have been selected by Hewlett Packard in the recently held campus recruitment drive.

Research Centre Team Attend Orientation Workshop

Prof. C. Ranganathaiah, Director-Research and Dr. Tenzin Pasang attended the orientation workshop on “Radiation: its applications in physical, Chemical and Life sciences”, jointly organized by UGC-DAE- Consortium for Scientific Research (CSR) and Mangalore University. Prof. Ranganathaiah was the co-ordinator of the event and he initiated this event with Dr. AK Sinha, Official-Director, UGC-DAE-CSR.

UGC-DAE CSR is an autonomous institute of university grants commission (UGC), which provides specialized training and advanced characterization facilities for university/college researchers and also making facilities of DAE accessible to them.

Leading scientist in radiations and nuclear physics from reputed institutes from all over the India participated in the event. There were more than 150 participants from VECC, Kolkata; BARC, Mumbai; TIFR, Mumbai; RRCAT, Indore; IGCAR, Kalpakkam; Institute of Physics, Bhubaneshwar; IITs and from various other reputed universities. The thrust of the workshop was to indentify the overlapping of research interest so that collaborative research proposals from universities/colleges and other teaching institutes may be initiated. This workshop may initiate a long time goal of Prof. Ranganathaiah to build a Low energy accelerator facility for the universities/colleges with budget of INR 30 crores. Prof. K. Byrappa, vice -chancellor of Mangalore University and Prof. D. Srivastava, Director, VECC assured all the support for the project.

Dr. Vishal Samartha Chief Guest at Govindas Pre-University College

Dr. Vishal Samartha was the Chief Guest at the Student Council inauguration for the academic year 2015-16 of Govindas Pre-University College. Dr. Vishal Samartha felicitated the office bearers. In her inaugural address, she urged the students to make use of the opportunities provided by the college and to be focused with their goal. She spoke on life skills which have to be incorporated by every student at every point of time. She congratulated the management for taking all steps in grooming their students.
