Ms. Deeksha Bhandari Secures Seat in London School of Economics

Ms. Deeksha Bhandari has secured a seat in one of the premier institutions of the world, the London School of Economics (LSE) to do her postgraduate program. She is presently completing her Bachelor of Arts, in Economics, Psychology and Literature at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. Her higher secondary education at Rishi Valley School, Madanapalli, which follows Jiddu Krishnamurthy's Philosophy of over all development has helped her reach the Student Council as the Vice President of Mount Carmel College, and one of the main organizers of their Cultural festival, called Cul-ah. She is also the elected General Secretary for the Indian Youth Congress, Shimoga Parliamentary Constituency. She was also offered seats from other prestigious colleges like Kings College, London and St. Andrews, Scotland.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and former President of India K. R. Narayanan are the alumni of LSE. LSE is closely associated with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen.

Sahyadri WhizQuiz 2015 Grand Finale Inaugural Function

The Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management held the grand finale of `Sahyadri WhizQuiz’; a quiz competition for under-graduate students of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts in the Campus. This mega event, the brainchild of Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Sahyadri Group of Institutions, was conducted with an objective of motivating the youth to update themselves with the latest developments in the areas of Business, Political System, Marketing, Human Resource, Finance and Indian Economy. The Chief Guest Mr. M. Jeba Kumar, Director-HR & Legal Services, Merit Matters, in his inaugural address, said that an incredible effort has gone into organizing this program. The human brain has the capacity to process millions of facts, but we rarely utilise this potential. The real wealth lies in our ideas and not in wallets. This effort of holding the WhizQuiz at Sahyadri is to bring those ideas out. He congratulated Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman of the Sahyadri Group of Institutions for bringing together this big crowd of young and energetic future builders of the nation. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal spoke about the milestones achieved by the institute over the years. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Professor in the Department of Business Administration highlighted the achievements and accomplishments of the MBA Department. Director of the Department of Business Administration Dr. A. P. Achar welcomed the gathering. The Quiz Master for the event, Mr. Rakshith Shetty spearheaded the quiz event by providing important guidelines to the participants. The event witnessed about 200 teams with 600 students from degree colleges of Mangalore, Bantwal, Puttur, Surathkal, Subramanya, Belthangady, Udupi participating in this mega event. Ninety teams qualified for the second round in the first preliminary round of which six teams qualified for the final round of the quiz to be held later in the day.

Sahyadri WhizQuiz 2015 Valedictory and Prize Distribution Ceremony

The Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management organised the grand finale of the “Sahyadri WhizQuiz”; a quiz competition for under-graduate students of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts in the Sahyadri Campus. The event witnessed about 200 teams with 600 students from degree colleges of Mangalore, Bantwal, Puttur, Surathkal, Subramanya, Belthangady, Udupi participating in this mega event.

Ninety teams qualified for the second round in the first preliminary round of which six teams qualified for the final round of the quiz after two preliminary rounds of elimination. The First place with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000/- was bagged by Akshay Nayak, Clafton and Ashwan Loy of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. The Second place with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/- was also bagged by Prathvi Bhandary, Gubin Moidu and Ashish K. of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore and the Third place with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- went to Sanjith Shenoy, Shamsheer and Manjunath of Canara College, Mangalore.

Chairman Addresses Participants of Sahyadri WhizQuiz

Post-lunch, Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Chairman of Sahyadri Group of Educational Institutions addressed the young participants of Sahyadri WhizQuiz . He said that a successful education comes with quality. Though Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management is a budding institute, he has always encouraged his faculty members to focus on quality and value education. He also said that the intention here was to develop a good relationship with neighboring colleges and he has wholeheartedly opened the doors of the institute for seeking any kind of guidance to the students for their higher education. Dr. Manjunath Bhandary also expressed his thanks to the student fraternity and the faculty members from various colleges for their participation and support.

Panel Discussion on `Career Path for Graduates’ during Sahyadri WhizQuiz

A panel discussion on “Career Path for Graduates” where experts from corporate were invited to guide the students to select the right career path after graduation was held in the Campus. Ms. Shipra Rai, Manager, Graduate Hiring & Learning, MPhasis an HP Company, Mr. M. Jeba Kumar, Director- HR & Legal Services, Merit Matters and Ms. Vidya Shenoy, Asst. Manager-HR, Manipal Technologies, Manipal were the members of the panel. It was learnt from the discussion that, at present, there is a great need for quality institutes that provide higher education that make youth industry-ready. Education is what we make of it; no doubt, it gives us a platform to polish our abilities and competencies. Students aspiring for higher education must keep their perspectives straight and right.

Three-Day Google Fest Mangaluru Held in the Campus

The three-day Google Fest Mangaluru organized by the Google Student Community saw the fest taking off with the "Go Online" event, where participants were given a week's time to move around the whole city to convince local businesses, enterprises, etc. to make their presence felt online by building front ends of websites, mobile apps, AdWords and gMap listings for them.

Another event, "Id8"; the design thinking session, was conducted by Karthik Ramakrishnan, Google Student Ambassador of Mangaluru. He gave the participants guidelines on to how to take forward their ideas on the given problem statement which was "A systematic feedback system for the customers meeting the District Commissioner (DC) of Mangaluru." Thirteen teams (four from Sahyadri) developed unique solutions to this same problem statement. The teams then presented their solutions before a jury consisting of Mr. Ashwin, NIC Officer, DC's Office, Mangaluru, Mr. Suresh Agarwal, CEO, Shri Shyam Technica, Ahmedabad and Dr. Antony A.J., Vice-Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management who presided over the whole event. The designs will be sent to the DC himself for his reviews and two best teams will be awarded on the 8th of March, 2015 at the valedictory of the Google Fest to be held in Forum Fiza Mall, Mangaluru.

A game development workshop - "Game On", a one-day hands-on session on Unity platform for a simple three-dimensional game was held on the second day of the fest. The workshop saw thirty-two participants from four different colleges in Mangalore - Shridevi Institute of Technology, Karavali College of Engineering, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil and Srinivas School of Engineering, Mukka. Mr. Vathsal Ambastha, Founder and MD of Firexit Software along with his team conducted the day long workshop. Participants were delighted with the experience and learning and thanked the Google Student Community for conducting the impactful session. The event was held in collaboration with the Google Student Ambassador of Manipal, Tanay Agarwal.

The Rohan Corporation App Fair was held on the third and final day of the Google Fest Mangaluru. Participants from seven different colleges developed mobile applications as per specifications given by The Rohan Corporation Pvt. Ltd., Mangaluru and three teams were shortlisted to present their apps before the IT team of the firm. The jury highly appreciated all three apps. One team will be selected as the winner and awarded a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. The results and prize distribution of the event will be held on the 8th of March 2015 at the valedictory of the Google Fest in Forum Fiza Mall, Mangaluru.

HOD Training Addresses the Employees at Cognizant Mangaluru

Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, Head of Training, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, addressed the employees of Cognizant, Mangaluru on 'Gender Sensitization and the Need for Gender Equality.' She spoke on the role of women in society, their contributions at home, at workplaces and to the society at large. In the knowledge world, they are on par with men. She also emphasised the efforts of the world bodies like World Economic Forum to bridge gender inequalities and the measures taken by countries towards bridging the gender gap through legislations and other women development programmes.

Sahyadrians Emerge Volleyball Champions in VTU Inter-Zonal Tournament for Third Consecutive Year

Continuing their winning spree, the Boys’ Volleyball team emerged the Champions for the third year straight in the VTU Inter-Collegiate Inter-Zonal Volleyball Tournament held at NMIT, Bangalore.

Abhishek Amin (Captain), Subramanya, Sharad Shetty, Suraj K.S., Deekshith Shetty, Savan Shetty, Izahis, Harshith, Mithes, Rumman, Glister D'Silva, Shri Harsha and Keerthi are the proud winners of the tournament.

Mr. Tenzin Pasang Successfully Defends his Doctoral Thesis

Mr. Tenzin Pasang, Assistance Professor, Department of Physics, completed his doctoral studies by successfully defending his thesis “Synthesis and Characterization of Molecular Imprinted Polymer using Positron Lifetime Spectroscopy.” He has to his credit fourteen international journal publications and several international/national conference publications. He has also delivered three oral / invited presentations in workshops and conferences.

He carried out his research under the guidance of Prof. C. Ranganathaiah at University of Mysore, Mysore. Prof. C. Ranganathaiah is presently Research-Director of Karnataka Government Research Center, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. Mr. Tenzin Pasang is the eighteenth Ph.D student of Prof. Ranganathaiah.


Faculty Member Presents a Paper in International Conference at Coimbatore)

Ms. D. Saranyaraj, Assistant Professor, Electronics and Communication Engineering attended the International Conference on Electronics and Communication Systems (ICECS'15) in Coimbatore. She also presented her research work titled " Benchmarking and analysis of CAN Transmission Latencies on Real-Time Environment " which will be published in IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The conference was held in Karpagam University, Coimbatore. The chief guest of the conference were Dr. Sing Kiong Nyuang, University of Auckland, New Zealand and Dr. Anand Paul, Kyungpook, National University, South Korea.

Faculty Member Attends State Level Workshop

Ms. Kavyashree M. P., Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering attended the three-day State Level Workshop on "Advanced Surveying and Mapping Techniques" held at Alva's Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moodbidri. The workshop was conducted by resource persons from NITK, IISC, Bangalore and Mangalore University on GPS, remote sensing application in civil engineering, photogrammetry, natural resource management and generation of digital elevation model and a demo on Total Station was given by Leica Pvt. Limited.

Faculty Member’s Research Paper Published in International Journal

A research paper entitled "Digital Resources and Services at SCEM, Mangalore" by Mrs. Bharathi K, Librarian, has been published online and in print in the International Journal of Digital Library Services Vol. 5, Issue. 1, Jan-March 2015, ISSN: 2250-1142 (Online), ISSN 2349-302X (Print) Pages 106-116. Ms. Shwetha Kumari K., Librarian, has scored 61.71% in the Karnataka State Eligibility Test (KSET)-2014 thus qualifying herself for Lecturer/Assistant Professorship.

Faculty Members Attend International Workshop at IIT-Madras

Mr. Suhas and Mr. Vaishak N. L., Assistant Professors, Department of Mechanical Engineering attended a four-day International Workshop on `Stress Assisted Environmental Damage in Structural Materials’, at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)- Madras, Chennai. The workshop was conducted by the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT- Madras. The workshop involved presentations from well-known researchers and post-doctoral candidates being experts in the field of fracture mechanics, environmental stress and damage in structural materials from various parts of the world which included Germany, UK, USA and Singapore.

Faculty Invited as Judge

Ms. Divya Prabhu P., Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration was invited to judge the Best Manager event in the National Level Management fest `Echelon 2015-Strive for Success’ organized by Shree Devi Institute of Technology, Kenjar, Mangalore.
