Grand Finale Sahyadri Whiz Quiz 2016

The Grand Finale of the Sahyadri Whiz Quiz 2016 was inaugurated by the chief guest Murthy Ramaiah Krishna, General Manager- HRM SLK Software, Bengaluru who has over 17 years of experience in talent acquisition, employer branding, quality management, candidate engagement, resource management, process improvement, community building etc. He applauded the efforts of the students and management for putting up a magnificent arena for undergraduate students for showcasing their intellectual capital. He called upon the students to pursue their passion, outperform oneself continuously and work with utmost integrity and honesty as that is the key to success in today’s competitive world. The guest being a marathon runner emphasized the need to dedicate oneself to work as well as to pursue one's passion. “This will lead to a healthier and happier life”, he said. He was amazed with the infrastructure and the hospitality provided by Sahyadrians and thanked the organizers for giving him the opportunity of being part of the program.

The event witnessed a mammoth crowd of students from various colleges in the Mangalore & Udupi region who made it to the finals from the month-long zonal level competitions held at various colleges during the month of February. Out of a total of 5000 students who took part in the zonal quiz competitions, 650 made it to the finals. Six teams faced the final round after two elimination rounds.

The Sahyadri Whiz Quiz is an annual event organised by the Department of Business Administration of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. The main idea behind the program is to motivate students to bring themselves up-to-date with the latest news and other emerging developments in the areas of Business History, Marketing, HR, Finance and the Indian economy.

Ms Jenevive Machado, Deputy Manager, HDFC Bank Ltd and an alumna of the College was the chief guest at the valedictory function. Irwin Glen Soans, Sheikh Rizwan Ahmed and Akhilesh of SDM College of Business Administration, Mangalore, were the winners of the Sahyadri Whiz Quiz 2016. The first runners-up were Lionel Rolson, Narthan Poovanna and Shaun Coelho of St Aloysius College, Mangalore and the second runners-up were Abhijatha, Suraj and Guruprasad of SVS College, Bantwal. The winners were awarded with cash prizes of Rs. 25000/-, Rs.15000/- and Rs.10000/-, respectively.

Alumnus Conducts Training Programme for Students

Karthik Bhat an alumnus of the college and software developer in Unicourt India and his colleague Santhosh K, senior software developer, organised a training session for the students of the third year computer science & engineering and information science & engineering on the Basics of Python. Forty-two students gained valuable insight during this training programme.

Edison’s Project Team Win First Place in Model Competition at "IEINITTE-2016”

In yet another stellar performance, the Edison’s project team won the first place in the State Level Event “Paper presentation and model exhibition” for their model "A new technique biogas digester for rural areas" presented by M R Radhika and Cavin Vijay Mascarenhas. The team participated in the State Level event conducted by Institute of Engineering (India), NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte on the theme "Emerging and sustainable technology for the successful accomplishment of national programme - Make in India". There were about 20 colleges which participated in the event from all over the state. The team presented 3 models. The other two models were "A low cost water filter to remove arsenic impurities" presented by Nirmith Ashok Bangera, Jeethan Grinal Rodrigues, Gagan S D, Charanraj Shetty and Nihal Chand and "Earthquake resistant structure" by Priya Jawalgi, Tejaswini, Sankya, Revathi, Shabareesh and Manjunatha N which won appreciations. All the students are from Semester VI, civil engineering.

Chaithra M., Chaithra R Moolya, Deekshitha G and Parvathi K, students of Semester VIII, Computer Science & Engineering, have made their entry into the All India level Unisys Cloud 20/20 student technical project contest version 7.0 under the guidance of Jinto Thomas, Asst. Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering with their project titled “Efficient Resource Utilization in Hadoop on Virtual Machines with Dynamic Allocation”.

Cloud 20/20 Version 7.0 is India’s biggest online technical project contest which gives the platform to showcase student’s innovative and path-breaking technical ideas and take them to the next level. Through Cloud 20/20 Version 7.0, Unisys aspires to reach out to the leading engineering campus all over in India and discover the finest technical talent.

Department of Mechanical Engineering Sponsors Team FORMULA SAHYADRI

Faculty members of the Department of Mechanical Engineering are the “Gold Sponsors” for Team FORMULA SAHYADRI with Rs. 50000/-. Team FORMULA SAHYADRI will be participating in the national level event “SAE SUPRA 2016” to be held at Buddh International Circuit, Noida, U.P., in July 2016. Prof. Mahesh B Davanageri, HoD of the department handed over the cheque to the team leader Jerin David Varghese in the presence of Dr. U M Bhushi, Principal, Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, Vice Principal and other faculty members.

The team FORMULA SAHYADRI, with 25 team members are designing, fabricating and developing a student version of a Formula 1 car (Prototype of F1 car). This event deals with design, manufacture, management, communication, research and marketing. SAE SUPRA is highly sought-after across the engineering mobility industry.

Campus Recruitment Drives

HCL Technologies Ltd. conducted lateral hiring for Java skill with experience between two to nine years. Nearly fifty candidates were part of the recruitment process. Renil Rajan, Talent Acquisition Group, HCL Technologies Ltd facilitated the entire process at the campus.


CoCubes conducted an Online test for the pre-final year engineering students of Sahyadri. 150 students participated in this test. The results are awaited.


SMEC Automation Pvt. Ltd. conducted the Electro jobs test for the candidates which is an international initiative to provide skilled manpower from campus to core industries. Around 130 students participated in the process. The final results are awaited.


Four students have been selected by Control Print Limited in the recently held recruitment drive at the campus.



Uthamraj T. Purthran from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Rea Eunice from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering have been selected by Just Dial Ltd during the PMKVY – Job & Skill Training Camp at the campus.

A paper titled “Study of wear behavior of glass/epoxy composites reinforced with Titanium Dioxide and graphite fillers” authored by Ansu James, M.Tech., student of Mechanical Engineering and coauthored by professors Mahesh B. Davanageri, Hanumantharaya and Prasad Chandran of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was published in the International Conference on Mechanical Materials and Manufacturing Systems held at Sriram Engineering College, Chennai.

IMCIC 2016

Prof. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering presented his research paper entitled "Matching Composite Sketches with Images Captured from Drone'' at The 7th International Multi-Conference on Complexity, Informatics and Cybernetics: IMCIC 2016, Orlando, Florida, USA.

He also got any opportunity to conduct a special session entitled "Frontiers in Development of Intelligent Applications for Medical Image Processing, Computer Vision and Soft Computing" at IMCIC 2016. This special session was attended by Prof. Dr. Mario Lamanna, Evoelectronics, Italy Prof. Dr. Leoni Ribikis, Riga Technical University, Latvia Prof. Dr. Detlev Doherr, University Applied Sciences, Germany and Prof. Dr. Antony Walfer, Applied Science, Switzerland.

IMCIC 2016 was organized and sponsored by the International Institute of Informatics and Systemics (IIIS, www.iiis.org), member of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR, www.ifsr.org). The IIIS is a multi-disciplinary organization for inter-disciplinary communication and integration, which includes more than 4500 members. Main purpose of the IIIS is to foster knowledge integration processes, interdisciplinary communication, and integration of academic activities.

Team HAWK Lands in the USA

Team HAWK has landed in the USA and are all set for the aero design competition at Texas.

The SAE Aero Design - East competition will be held in Fort worth, Texas, USA from 11-13 March 2016 and is conducted by NASA and Lockheed Martin. Team HAWK is one among the two teams from Karnataka, with 75 teams from around the world participating in the SAE International Aero Design – East. Team HAWK members Mohammad Anwar, Tharanath, Gouse Khan M S, Midhun Jyothis, Gerald K Antony, Rajgokul Ganiga P S, Nitin S Prakash, Probid J and Amrutha Khandare will present their aero design model at the competition.

Guest Lecture on Corporate Life by Perin from ICFAI

Mr. Perin, Area Manager, ICFAI Business School, addressed final year students of computer science & engineering and information science & engineering on corporate life. He briefed about time management skills, competition in the corporate world, decision making and problem solving skills.

Edison’s Project Team Winners in National Science Day Celebration

Continuing their winning spree, the Edison’s project team participating in the district level event Idea Presentation during the National Science Day Celebrations at the Pilikula Regional Science Centre bagged the third place in the event. There were twenty-two participants from various colleges in Mangalore including NITK, St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Institute of Technology and Engineering among others. Students had to present ideas related to `Make in India’ and the team presented the idea of a “three-staged Digester for a community Digester that uses food waste as feedstock.” M R Radhika, Cavin Vijay Mascarenhas, Jeethan Grinal Rodrigues, Nirmith Ashok Bangera and Nihal Chand were the team members.

Dr. Vishal Samartha takes over as the Director in charge of Department of Business Administration

Dr. Vishal Samartha has been appointed as the Director in-charge, Department of Business Administration of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. She has more than 19 years of experience in teaching and more than 9 years of experience in Research. She has completed her Ph. D in Business Administration from Mangalore University. She is presently the member of the Board of Examiners for MBA at VTU.

Faculty Members Paper Published in JIDPS Special Issue

A research paper entitled "Computer Aided Diagnosis for Early Skin Cancer Detection" by Professors Ananth Prabhu G, Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering has been published in the Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science (JIDPS) which is Special issue on Design of Health Information Systems. JIDPS is indexed in Academic Source Complete, ACM Digital Library, Compendex, CPX, EBSCO databases, Google Scholar, Science & Technology Collection, Scopus, Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, Web of Science: Emerging Sources Citation Index.

Recent research shows that there is a critical need to develop a system to prevent melanoma cancer. Melanoma cancer cells have uneven border shapes, angular edges and also colour variations are found in these types of cells. To detect melanoma in its early stage, cell colour, its shape and texture on the surface of the skin need to be studied extensively. In this paper the authors have developed two Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) techniques colour constancy and skin lesion analysis for early skin cancer detection, these techniques are validated on EDRA database and PH2 database

Molly S Chaudhuri, Shreelatha U. A., Pooja Yashwanth Rai, Varsha, Shanti Lobo and Marie Fernandes attended a two-day international conference on “Human Rights Education for Social Practice” at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore. The main theme of this conference was to integrate the global principles of human rights in social work, medical, nursing, management and legal practice. Sahyadri was one of the sponsors for this event.

Sahyadri Boys’ Volleyball team win runners-up trophy

The Sahyadri Boys’ Volleyball team won the runners-up trophy in the VTU Inter- Zone Volleyball Tournament held at JNNCE, Shimoga. Suraj K.S. Naik was the captain and Deekshith Shetty, Savan Shetty, Ujwal, Keerthi Shetty, Mohammed Ashiq Aseel, Dekshith M., Rummana Ahmed, Rahul Shetty, Manish, Sathyajith Prabhu and Bharat were part of the team.

Sahyadri Boys’ & Girls’ Team Runners-up in Cross-Country Competition

The Sahyadri Girls’ Cross-Country team won the runners-up Trophy and the Boys’ team won the first runners-up trophy in the VTU Inter-Zone Cross-Country Competition held at Dr. TT Institute of Technology, Kolar.

Sushma Shetty, Manjushree Bhandary, Swathi Gowda, Anusha Hegde, Vidya Ganiga, and Jayalakshmi Shekharan C made up the girls’ team and Sannidhi Shetty, Shashwath M.R., Sandeepa Prabhu, Sarvesh Martha, Rakshith Raj, Ankit Prathap Singh, Sachin Kumar P.K., Nishwin Pal and Mohammad Irfan were in the boys’ team.

Sahyadrians Win Third Place in VTU Zonal Kho-Kho Tournament

The Sahyadri Kho-Kho team won the third place in the VTU Zonal Kho-Kho Tournament held at Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangalore. The team was captained by Praveen P.R.
