Sahyadri honours Armed Force veterans in commemoration of Martyr’s DaySahyadri honours Armed Force veterans in commemoration of Martyr’s Day To honour the great selfless service rendered and the sacrifices made by the soldiers of our nation in order to protect our freedom and safeguard our way of life, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management in association with the NSS unit of the college commemorated the Martyr’s Day by felicitating Mr. KoosappaShetty and his wife Mrs. UmavathiShetty, and also Mr. YeshvanthGopalShetty, Principal, Mangalore Institute of Fire and Safety Engineering. Mr. KoosappaShetty has served in the Indian Army for 20 years. Mr. YeshvanthGopalShetty has served as an aircraft technician in the Indian Air Force for 16 years.
The program began with a short video presentation about the life of a solider in the army and the sacrifice they make for the sake of our nation. Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, Vice Principal made the introductory speech where he spoke about how our soldiers work day and night to ensure our safety and freedom. He explained the adversities which the soldiers have to face while protecting the border from external threats. He then, introduced the guests to the audience and welcomed them.

The guests were honoured with the traditional Sahyadri custom of shawl, fruits, garland and mementos. It is a matter of great pride for us to mention that Mr.KoosappaShetty and Mrs. UmavathiShetty are the parents of our very own Prof. Prabhakar of Computer Science Department. Mr. KoosappaShetty shared with the audience his 20 years of experiences in the army and the days of war. He had witnessed two wars i.e., Indo-Pak war of 1965 & 1971 during his service in the army, he said, and went on to share stories of his service in different sectors and locations across India. His life in the army is truly commendable!!

Mr. YashvanthShetty spoke to the students on the topic ‘Youth and Patriotism’. He shared his story and experiences working for the Indian Air Force and Qatar Armed Forces. He shared his idea of true patriotism and also expressed his concerns over how the present youth are tangled in the web of mobile phones and how they have lost the sense of responsibility towards the country. He discussed the importance of youth to take part in the development and progress of the nation. He called upon the students to burn the fire of patriotism and service mindedness towards the nation.

Dr. U.M.Bhushi, Principal, gave his presidential remarks by acknowledging the support and sacrifices made by the family members of the soldiers as they go away to serve the nation. He urged the students to work for the country and serve the nation to the fullest. His desire is that everyone should get opportunity to experience the life and discipline of a soldier. He urged the students to do something, if not something big, for the good of the nation.

The program was organized by the Academic team and NSS Unit under the supervision of Mrs. ShreelathaU.M., Academic Administrative Officer, Dr. J.V.Gorbal,Dean,Academics. Faculty of various departments of engineering,students of engineering and MBA witnessed this event.

Theme - “Water for Nature” on the World Water Day

World Water Day World Water Day was observed at Sahyadri in association with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), National Service Scheme Unit and Department of Civil Engineering. Mr. C J Jagadeesha, ISRO, Hon. Secretary, KERF, Bengaluru was the Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony. The programme was inaugurated by watering a plant by the Chief Guest and the Resource person. Mr. C J Jagadeesha addressed the Civil Engineering Students and faculty regarding the role of Civil Engineers in water resource management & assessment and how one could contribute to the society to meet the future per capita demand of water. He also spoke about various methods of water irrigation systems and categorized the same based on their efficiency. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal in his presidential address, conveyed to put forth the insights that students received from the programme amongst the public and work towards augmenting the solution for the current issues pertaining to water management. Dr. Sushmitha Vamshi, Health Advisor & Wellness Consultant, Bengaluru delivered a technical talk on water quality requirement for consumptive use. In her address, Dr. Sushmitha spoke on the importance of maintaining quality of drinking water in the current generation and generations to come. Requirements of a healthy cell, H2O composition of body, Kangen water properties, anti oxidation, alkalinization & micro clustering of water, process of free radicals, pH of potable water, our typical diet, water channels and aquaporins, ionized water etc were the highlights of her technical session.

Ananth Seshan and Ms. Sumitra Seshan from Canada visit Sahyadri Dr. Ananth Seshan, Chairman, 5G Group, Canada and Ms. Sumitra Seshan, CEO, 5th Generation Tech., Canada visit Sahyadri. They held a session on “Rise of Smart Manufacturing” for the Students of Mechanical and MBA Department along with faculty of various departments.

Ms. Sumitra gave a brief about the 5G group. 5G is a boutique research and innovation group founded in the year 2000. With a vision of being a niche player in the automated discovery and use of real time intelligence, 5G has conducted research, developed and successfully commercialized 4 software/digital products to large manufacturers, utilities and facilities worldwide.

Dr. Ananth while addressing the gathering, briefed about the challenges in the older version of manufacturing practices and also insight on how new SMART manufacturing techniques help in overcoming these challenges.

Achievement of First Year's at NITK, Surathkal

Achievement of First Year's at NITK, Surathkal National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK), formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), also known as NIT Surathkal, is a public engineering university at Surathkal, Mangaluru. ENGINEER is the Annual Technical Symposium of NITK Surathkal and is one of the largest of its kind in India.

Students collaborate with NIPM for a CSR activity at Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru On the occasion of Founder’s Day of NIPM (National Institute of Personnel Management), Mangaluru Chapter, Prof. Sushma V & Prof. Padmanabha B from the Dept. of Business Administration along with students visited Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru and distributed fruits to 150 children patients and their families. Sahyadri has an institutional membership with NIPM. Sahyadri and NIPM have been actively associated with each other in carrying out student-centric and community initiatives for the last 1 year.

MBAs on a Govt. School visit to Angaragundi, Baikampady Industrial Area, Mangaluru for an ISR Activity In addition to learning about the subjects in MBA, the Department inculcates in students a sense of social responsibility. Learning about giving and helping others give student’s a feeling of empowerment. As an ISR activity, a total of 10 first year students had been to Government High School Angaragundi, Baikampady Industrial area, Mangaluru. The main objective of the activity was to train them through different activities on Team Work, Confidence Building, Time Management, and Stress Management, utilize opportunities, Communication Skill and Leadership Skill. During the feedback session, the school teachers acknowledged that their students could be seen working as a team for the first time and appreciated the sessions on Stress and Time Management.

Research Article of the Physics Faculty Published in Springer Journal

A research paper titled “High energy electron irradiation effects on Ga-doped ZnO thin films for optoelectronic space applications” authored by Dr. F. Jyothi Serrao, Associate Professor, Department of Physics has been published in the International Journal of ‘Applied Physics A, Materials Science & Processing’, (2018) 124:224 (SCI indexed, Springer Journal, having an impact factor of 1.455). In this article the effect of 8 MeV electron beam irradiation on the structural, optical and electrical properties GZO thin film is discussed. This study is useful in deciding the compatibility of prepared GZO thin films on optoelectronic device applications in electron radiation environment.

Team Ansys is a team of 20 students of first year that participated in the 3-days technical fest. The events that were organized were, Maze Explorer and Water Rocket.

Navin Bappalige attended VGST interactive meeting at Bengaluru An interactive meeting was organized by VGST, Government of Karnataka for all the project grantees of the year 2016-17. Bharatha Ratna Prof. C N Rao, addressed the programme coordinators and briefed about how to utilize the research grants and to contribute even at limited facilities. Dr. Navin N Bappalige, Dept. of Physics, being the lone VGST grantee for the year 2016-17, represented Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in the meeting and handed over Sahyadri Conclave Booklet to Dr. SreeKanta Swamy, Consultant VGST. 1st year engineering students participated in Technozion, a Three-Day Annual Technical symposium organized by the student fraternity of National Institute of Technology, Warangal. Students collaborate with NIPM for a CSR activity at Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru Sushmitha S from 1st year MBA (2017-19) has secured 2nd Rank in her BBM in Mangalore University. She was felicitated during the convocation at the university. Sushmitha is well read and has been consistent in her academic performance at MBA as well. The department is delighted with her success in the under-graduate course and look forward to her achievement in MBA VTU curriculum as well.

GST, an Add-on course for 1st year MBA in Finance Thrust Area The introduction of Goods and Services Tax with effect from 1st July, 2017 by the Government of India has heralded a ‘structural change ‘in the tax regime of our country. The whole system on GST has to be studied skilfully by Manufacturers & Business firms supplying goods and services. Therefore, it is a great opportunity for MBA students during their placement if they are GST compliant. In view of this, the Dept. of Business Administration has made it mandatory for MBA students to study GST as an additional course with examination being conducted during their internals. Prof. Raghavendra Prabhu is the facilitator of the course for the 1st year MBAs.

Training Programme by MBAs Being motivated by the quote - “Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning” by Fred Rogers, students of 1st year MBA facilitated a Training Programme, an Activity Based Learning in Human Resource Management curriculum at UBMC Primary School, Gorigudda, Mangaluru. From approval of the Principal of UBMC Primary School till its execution followed by collating feedback from students about the training programme, the entire activity was carried out by MBA students. Student engagement activities like Puzzle game, Pictionary, Blind Folded Games, Listen and Recap were organized for the students. Participants were given the opportunity to exhibit their talents by singing, dancing and also talking about their ideal person in life. The programme was well appreciated by the students and teachers of the school.

Training Programme by MBA's at Govt Higher Primary School, Kannur Every child has a different learning style and pace. If a child can't learn in the way we teach, we must teach in the way the child can learn. MBA students from the 1st year conducted a training programme in Govt Higher Primary School, Kannur. From taking approval with the Principal of the school to its execution was a wholly new experience for the MBA students. They conducted activities on Making Draft Models, English Vocabulary, Story Building, Number Knot and Pictionary. Through this initiative our students have learnt that each child is unique - not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding. Students of the school gave hand written feedback, which our students will analyze and accommodate in the future training programmes.
