Sahyadri organised workshop on Aspects of LTE-4G Sahyadri organised workshop on Aspects of LTE-4G Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organised a three day workshop on “Aspects of LTE-4G”. The TEQIP 1.3 sponsored workshop was organised in association with Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and RDL Pvt. Ltd.

The inaugural ceremony started with a formal ceremony in the presence of Dr. M.H. Kori, Technical Director (Retd.), Alcatel-Lucent Technologies; Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; and Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head of the Department, Electronics & Communication Engineering. Faculty, students and participants from various colleges were also present. Dr. Ashwath Rao welcomed the dignitaries. He gave a brief introduction about the three-day workshop with its schedule and contents to be imparted in the training.

In his address, Dr. M.H. Kori emphasized on the importance of learning new technologies and tools for faculty and the students. He gave an insight into the importance of wireless communication. He highlighted the history of Department of Telecommunication (DOT) and went on to say that availing telephone connection in India before BSNL existed was a tedious task. He shed some light on various statistics regarding the present mobile phone usage in India and worldwide. As per the survey done as recently as January 2019, over 120 Crores of telephone connections exist in India, out of which 110 crores are mobile users. He said that mobile manufacturing units were not a part of India till 2015 and only one or two indigenous companies manufacture mobile phones as of today.

Dr. Srinivasa Rao Kunte briefed us about the importance of this workshop which is believed to be the cutting edge in the telecommunication domain.

First year students attend IoT Challenge competition at IIT Bombay First year students attend IoT Challenge competition at IIT Bombay I3indya technologies (IIT Bombay) had conducted an IoT challenge competition at Sahyadri back in Feb’19 which included a Two-Day workshop. Four of the first year engineering students - Vrashank Rao M, M Vishwas Kamath, Vishnudas Nayak P and Vineeth Rai K had attended this workshop and were selected in Top 6 in Mangalore Zonal out of 30 teams which included teams from reputed institutions. They cleared all the rounds and got selected in the finals clearing the 4 tasks to be completed within the deadlines. In the finals held in IIT Bombay, they competed with top 50 teams of India and made place in the Top 20.

A total of 48 students along with faculty members - Mr. Girish and Mr. Yathiraj were at the campus for the visit of the in-house Start-Ups and industries at Sahyadri. They also went through the Hands-On Training in Typing Skills facilitated by Chirag Bangera, the student of 2nd Year MBA-HR under the guidance of Prof. Prajwala Rodrigues. Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering in association with NITK-Surathkal conducted a workshop on Virtual Labs Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering in association with NITK-Surathkal conducted a workshop on Virtual Labs Virtual Labs is an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development under the National Mission on Education through ICT. A team of ten members from NITK facilitated the sessions. Virtual Labs provide remote-access to Labs in various disciplines of Science and Engineering. These have collaboration with 12 institutions all over India which includes IIT’s, NIT’s & IIIT’s. The broad areas of Virtual Labs are Electronics & Communications, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and so on. The sessions at Sahyadri were conducted for the second & third year students of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science Engineering & Information Science Engineering.

Students got an insight into the experiments available in the Virtual labs under various broad areas. Students also got a hands-on experience on simulation, calculations and experiments available. Students of Electronics & Communication Engineering analyzed the characteristics of digital logic families, learnt sampling theorems, convolution of signals, Ohm’s law, full wave rectification, characteristics of RC, RL RLC networks. Computer Science Engineering & Information Science Engineering students conducted experiments based on Karnaugh maps, combinational circuits, programming languages, computer organization etc.

In his talk, he highlighted the basic concepts of water treatment and discussed the technical aspects related to membrane filtration. The students of Pre-final year Civil Engineering were a part of this event.

The students were accompanied by Prof. Pavithra Ajagol and Prof. Dennis Pinto. During the visit, the students got a first-hand experience of various cutting edge facilities and gained insights in the field of manufacturing. Interaction with the engineers also gave an opportunity to discuss about the impact of automation and various challenges faced in manufacturing units. Students explored the possible internship opportunities in the field of manufacturing.

Dr. S Manjappa, Director of Research, introduced the theme of this year's World water day "Leaving No One Behind". The chief guest of the day was Dr. Lakshman Nandagiri, Department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics, NITK, Suratkal. In his address, he stressed upon the need for saving water. He also outlined the present water scenario and the need to conserve it for the future generations. He also spoke about the impact of climate change due to anthropogenic activities. Dr. Amba Shetty, Professor & Head, Dept of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics, NITK, Suratkal, was the resource person. She spoke about the application of RS and GIS in water resource management. Dr. Basavaraju Manu, Associate Professor, Dept of Civil Engineering, NITK, Suratkal spoke about the role of coastal reservoirs and the advantages of the same. He also explained about the Wastewater Treatment Techniques.

B K Keshavan from PES University visited the campus Dr. B K Keshavan is a Dean of Academics & Evaluation at PES University. He is a Ph. D from IIT Bombay in “Power System Reliability” and has 36 years of teaching experience. He is currently guiding 4 research scholars and 4 have already been awarded their Ph.D under his guidance. He was awarded the “Centre of Excellence in High Voltage & Power System” from Vision Group on Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Karnataka and received a grant of Rs. 60 Lakhs.

Technical Session on Virtual Labs by NITK faculty to the students of Civil Engineering Dept. of Civil Engineering in association with SPACE conducted a technical session on Virtual Lab for the pre-final year students. The talk was conducted by research scholars of NITK, one among those was Ms. Aishwarya Shetty, an alumna of Sahyadri 2017 pass out batch. The session emphasized the use of virtual labs in helping the students in learning basic and advanced concepts through remote experimentation.

A virtual lab is an Initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development under the National Mission on Education through ICT. It provides remote-access to Labs in various disciplines of Science and Engineering. It also provides a complete Learning Management System around Virtual Labs where the students can avail the various tools for learning, including additional web-resources, video-lectures, animated demonstrations, and self-evaluation. Students of 2nd and pre-final year Civil Engineering were benefitted through the session.

The Team includes Chethan Kumar for sixth semester Mechanical Enginering; Savin Kumar from sixth semester Civil Engineering and Basavarajeshwari Ambi from fourth semester Information Science & Engineering. They are presenting Project One-Touch [Travel on Fingertip] in finals among eminent juries who are directors, Managers and project heads of different industries.
