Grand Finale of the Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014

The Zonal Level Competitions of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014 held at twenty-nine zonal centres in Karnataka and Kerala over the last month culminated in the finale at the Campus with the zonal level winners taking part in the finals in Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management who was host to 1200 students from 200 colleges. Close to 100 projects were put on display by all the participating PU colleges. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Srinivasan Venkat (KVS), Tech Mahindra. In his inaugural speech to the gathering he said that he was happy to be a part of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014. It is a very good opportunity to utilize this programme and called upon the students to extract as much as they could for their future. He said, “Do it now. Sometime later it becomes never.” Dr. T. G. Sitharam, IISc., Bangalore, Dr. Abhishek Vaish, IIIT-Allahabad and Dr. S. Ananth Raj, Vision Group on Science & Technology, Bangalore, were the Guests of Honour.

Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation in his presidential address, conveyed his joy to the students by saying that it was his vision and thanked Prof. Kareem, the chief co-ordinator and all the faculty members who made this event come true. In his motivating speech, he said that it is not academics which is the criteria to excel but along with academics, talent, intelligence and passion is very important. He called upon the students to use the platform provided by Sahyadri and interact with eminent invitees and develop their knowledge. The SSTH will be an annual event with Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management having earmarked Rs. 25 lakhs every year to fund student projects. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. In his enlightening speech he said that the aim of the College was to change rote learning into learning through projects.

Prof. Kareem, the chief co-ordinator of the event declared the Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014 open. The day-long events witnessed students showcasing their talent in projects, models, essay-writing and quiz competitions. They had the opportunity to interact with the guests individually as well as through a panel discussion. There was a question & answer session which was answered by the dignitaries. The dignitaries assured their full support to the budding scientists.

Mr. Srinivasan Venkat (KVS), Tech Mahindra addressed the M.Tech. and MBA placed students and faculty in a separate session. He spoke about the opportunities available once they complete their post graduation. He emphasised on the urge to learn and advised them on how to get into the IT profession.

Dr. T. G. Sitaram, IISc., Bangalore, addressed the M.Tech. students and faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. Abhishek Vaish, IIIT-Allahabad and Dr. S. Ananth Raj, Vision Group on Science & Technology, Bangalore, interacted with the research co-ordinators, Hods and senior staff. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation interacted with all the Principals and co-ordinators of all the participating colleges.

During the Valedictory function prize winners were awarded certificates and cash prizes. The Overall Championship was bagged by Expert PU College, Mangalore. The First place in the Quiz Competition went to Expert PU College, Govindas PU College bagged the Second place and Mahesh PU College, Mangalore, won the Third place. In the Essay Competition on the topic “Science Education: Challenges and Solution,” Expert PU College bagged the First and Third place whereas, Mahesh PU College won the Second place. In the Project Exhibition Competition, SSPU College, Subramanya, won the First place, Sahyadri PU College bagged the Second place and Excellent PU College bagged the Third place. DVS PU College, Shimoga, won the First place in the Model Competition, GHSS, Hosdurg, Kasargod won the Second place and MPMES INDP PU College, Bhadravathi, won the Third place.

The curtains came down on The Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014 with a scintillating cultural programme by the students of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Workshop on “Offshore Engineering and Opportunities”

The Department of Civil Engineering held a full-day workshop entitled “Offshore Engineering and Opportunities” in the Campus. Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi was Chief Guest of the program and the function was presided over by Prof. Umashankar B. S, Dean Academic. Prof. Umesh S. S, HoD of the department addressed all the dignitaries, staff and students. The resource person of the workshop was Mr. Vaibhav Inamdar (Chief Learning Officer) NGICE, Bengaluru. Mr. Inamdar gave a talk about the demands of offshore structures, salary structures in offshore industry, consumption and exploration of oil in the world and also gave an introduction and demonstration of SACS- Bently software, Aveva PDMS. Sixty-four delegates participated in the workshop from different institutes. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together students towards industrial exposure in the offshore engineering technology and to identify opportunities in offshore industries.

Alumnus Shows her Appreciation to her Alma Mater

Manasa C. G., (M-Tech CAEDS); an alumnus of the College and her father Mr. Gangadhar H.S., gifted a memento to show her appreciation to her Alma Mater.

SAMCE - Sahyadri Association of M.Tech. Civil Engineers Inaugurated

SAMCE- Sahyadri Association of M.Tech Civil Engineers was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal of the College. In his inaugural address, he said that engineers should be passionate, be proud, be sincere and that involvement is important to achieve something in any work. He also reiterated that students should work beyond their curricular activity to make significant change in society. The function was presided over by Prof. Umashankar B. S., Dean Academic. In his presidential address, he gave a motivational speech for the students to utilize these platforms and to make significant change in the civil engineering field. He called on civil engineers to be like an EAGLE. Prof. Umesh S. S. HoD, Department of Civil Engineering also addressed all the dignitaries, staff and students.

‘Hindi Diwas Samaaroh – 2014’

Hindi Sangh of Sahyadri P. U. College organized “Hindi Diwas Samaaroh – 2014” as a part of Hindi Day celebrations. Dr. R. Nagesh Kanchan, Hindi Faculty, St. Agnes College, Mangaluru, was the Chief Guest.

Dr. Nagesh explained the significance of Hindi Diwas and the role of Hindi Language in nation building. He provided useful tips to the students on enhancing their language competence and communication skills. He assured the students that Hindi language does provide job opportunities to those who have mastered it.

Mr. Naveen S. A. Principal, Sahyadri P. U. College, lamented the decline in the standard of language being used in the media and called upon the students to make the best use of co-curricular activities in the college. He lauded the efforts of Hindi Sangh in this regard.

Top-scorers in Hindi Exams and students who won in the various competitions held as a part of Hindi Day celebrations were felicitated on this occasion. The formal programme was followed by a cultural presentation by students. Mrs. Tasleema, Hindi Faculty, Sahyadri P. U. College and Co-ordinator of Hindi Sangh provided valuable guidance to the students in organizing the event.

“Nudi Namana – 2014”

‘Sirigannada Koota’, the Kannada Association of Sahyadri P. U. College organized “Nudi Namana – 2014”, as a part of Kannada Rajyothsava celebrations. Dr. Nagaveni Manchi, H.O.D. Kannada Department, S. V. S College, Bantwal was the Chief Guest.

Dr. Nagaveni stressed the importance of language, culture and art in our lives. She urged the students to think beyond the academic curriculum and listed the advantages of reading literature. She complimented the Kannada Association for encouraging the creativity among students.

Mr. Naveen S. A. Principal, Sahyadri P. U. College, opined that present day youth ignore the importance of language and literature because of their fascination towards mobile phones and social media. He advised the students to develop the reading habit and quoted several Kannada poems to illustrate the noble thoughts expressed in them.

Winners of various competitions held as a part of “Nudi Namana – 2014” were felicitated on the occasion. The formal programme was followed by a cultural presentation by students.

Ms. Deepthi, Kannada Faculty, Sahyadri P. U. College and Co-ordinator of ‘Sirigannada Koota’ provided valuable guidance to the students in organizing the programme.

Computer Society of India Certifies the College

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has been certified as an Educational Institution Member by the Computer Society of India. It is a great honour for the College.

`Id8’ Google Student Community Event Held in the Campus

The Mangalore Chapter of Google Student Community launched its second event – “Id8” (read as “ideate”) at the Campus. The “design thinking session” saw participants from three colleges- PA College of Engineering, St. Aloysius Degree College and Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. The participants were asked to design a solution for the problem statement – “How to make education more fun and accessible?” A two-hour hands- on session on the concept of design thinking and 10X thinking was given by the Google Student Ambassador, Karthik Ramakrishnan, following which, the teams made their prototypes and marketed them to a set of jury members. The three winning teams were awarded cash prizes, along with a chance to assist the team of engineers working on mega Android and Cloud projects. The terms of impact was reached on a quality basis rather than a quantity basis, since all the teams came up with unique and creative solutions.

Sahyadri Athletic Team Overall Runners-up in VTU Athletic Meet

The Sahyadri Athletic Team won the Overall Runners-up trophy in the Girls’ section and Overall Third place in the Boys’ section at VTU’s 17th Inter-collegiate Athletic Meet 2014-15 held at Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. Faculty Member Qualifies as State Refree in Powerlifting

Mr. Karthik Raj Kudroli, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, has qualified as the State Refree in powerlifting, Karnataka Powerlifting Association. He is also invited as the refree and technical officer to render his services in the XXXVI Men , XIX Women Karnataka State Junior and Master Powerlifting Championships 2014 to be held at Bhadravathi, Shimoga District from 14th to 16th November 2014 organized by Shimoga District Powerlifting Association.
