Grand Finale of the Sahyadri ScienceTalent Hunt-2016

The Zonal Level Competitions of Sahyadri ScienceTalent Hunt-2016 held at forty four zonal centers across Karnataka over the last month culminated in the finale at the Campus. The zonal level winners took part in the finals at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management who was host to 1500 students from 120 colleges. Close to 250 projects were put on display by all the participating High schools and PU colleges. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Gopalan Jagadeesh, Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Bangalore and was symbolically inaugurated by Dr. Murli Dhar Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Barkatullah University, Bhopal in the august presence of Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, Padmashri Prof. S. K. Shivakumar, Professor, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the former Director of ISAC, Director of ISRO and Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Co-coordinator of SSTH-2016. Prof. Gopalan Jagadeesh in his inaugural address, stated the Trends and Perspectives in Development of Science and Technology and said that technology has the potential to develop a product, while Dr. Tiwari congratulated the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary for the unique initiative of organizing SSTH and also wished that students graduated from Sahyadri would contribute to the country’s growth.

The day-long events witnessed students showcasing their talent in project and model competition. They had the opportunity to interact with the guests individually as well as through the panel discussion. The panelists for the day were overwhelmed by the event and congratulated Sahyadri for hosting the unique program.

Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Co-coordinator of SSTH-2016 welcomed the gathering. Mr. Deepak Thimaya, the moderator of SSTH-2016 gave a start to the panel discussion.

Dr. Murli Dhar Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, former and first Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT) also the first Director of Rajeev Gandhi Institute of Information Technology urged the students to take the benefits that are offered by the central universities for the improvement of societal activities. He said, Sahyadri is the only unique institute offering facilities and contributes for the betterment of the students.

Padmashri Prof. S. K. Shivakumar, Professor at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the former Director of ISAC threw light upon what Space means to a common man and enlightened regarding the Job opportunities associated in this field. He said India has made a mark in the Space program and many new innovations are happening, thus making India a frontliner. Research and Development has become the talk of the day. He advised the students to be well focused, work hard and put sincere efforts in their area of interest to achieve success.

Prof. Gopalan Jagadeesh, Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore appreciated the efforts put in by the participants in project display and Sahyadri for organising the event. He motivated the students to never give up, even if they come across failure in their experiment as an entrepreneur and also advised them to have self confidence, develop a good role model in life and use platforms to convert their projects to products.

There was a question & answer session which was answered by the dignitaries. Mr. Deepak Thimaya, the moderator of SSTH-2016 concluded the panel discussion stating that, Innovation will come up with the students’ hard work and their efforts. Efforts will take any individual to their growth.

At the valedictory, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation delivered the presidential address. He congratulated the students for their efforts and enthusiastic participation in the SSTH-2016. He stated that it is not only academics which is the criteria to excel but along with academics, talent, intelligence and passion is very important because these young minds are the future scientists and entrepreneurs of developing India. He called upon the students to use the platform provided by Sahyadri and interact with eminent invitees and develop their knowledge. He emphasized on converting Project to product.

Karthik Kashyap guides IAS aspirants for appearing UPSC Karthik Kashyap guides IAS aspirants for appearing UPSC Mr. Karthik Kashyap, IAS officer spelt out roadmap for preparing to UPSC examinations. In his talk, he highlighted that there is no shortcut to success. One has to be determined for his goal which will definitely be rewarded by success. He also emphasized that strong base has to be built to crack this examination. He also added that one has to keep his eyes and ears open and grab information and current scenario. A minimum of 60 hours of study is required per week. He also gave reference of books for aspirants.

Karthik, in his very first attempt got through the IAS, considered to be the mother of all exams. He completed his Civil Engineering from NITTE in 2007. Presently, he is The Superintendent of Police, Goa. He is the Son of Former Mayor Mr. Shanker Bhat & Ms. Sujatha S Bhat. Karthik received IPS Association's Sword of Honour for the best outdoor probationer at the 63rd 'Dikshant Parade' (passing out parade) of the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad from E S L Narasimhan, governor of Andhra Pradesh. He has married to Ms. Priya Kashyap who is also an IPS officer serving in Goa.

Mr. Max E. Rasquinha, International Business Consultant and Philanthropist visits Sahyadri Mr. Max E. Rasquinha , International Business Consultant and Philanthropist from Houston, Texas, USA visited the Sahyadri campus and interacted with the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the Principal, Dr. U.M.Bhushi, the student entrepreneurs and the students of the Aero design team. He went around the campus and appreciated the facilities and infrastructure provided for the students.

Mr. Max Rasquinha is an International business Consultant in the oil and gas sector, situated in Houston for 37 years after being in the Middle East for 23 years and a short stint in Calgary, Canada. He is an active philanthropist dedicating his service to several humanitarian causes. He has patronised many educational institutions in Canada and USA.

Mangalore being his birthplace, Max's heart still lies in India and the Mangaloreans which is visible in his philanthropic works.He has also established the International Orientation Center and the International Institute for Public Policy- A 'think-tank' movement in Mangalore. He brought the Toastmasters International to Mangalore with the establishment of Winners Club Toastmasters.

His global and intellectual involvement involves his continuing education with the London Chamber of Commerce, International Management Association in Europe, The London school of Business in England, The American management Association, The Houston Community college,North Harris college at Kingwood, The Houston Baptist University, The University of St. Thomas, Houston, Oklahama University, University of Houston, Rice University and the University of Calgary, Canada. His autobiography of two volumes, "I'll Cry Tomorrow" outlines seventy seven years of his life and experiences in six countries and seven cities.


Sinchana-2016 celebrated in the campus

Sinchana-2016 celebrated in the Sahyadri campus “Sinchana 2016 – Sprinkle of Talents”, a cultural extravaganza had been celebrated in the campus on Sunday, 6th November. Mr. Jagannatha Chowta, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation and Governing Council Member of the college inaugurated the programme by beating drums. Addressing the audience he said art and culture is important for every individual in order to shed away negativity and recoup good energy which forms as a driving force for our daily work. He gave a call to the students to make use of the platform to exhibit their talents. He narrated a story to emphasize on the importance of empathy to others and the society. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, presided over the function and in his presidential remark, urged the students to effectively utilize the opportunity. Prof. Balakrishna S S, Vice Principal, welcomed the gathering and Ms. Varsha rendered the Vote of Thanks. Mr. Chinmay Bharan, Council Head for Art & Culture, Mr. Naveen Pilar, Head of the Department of Art and Culture were present on the dais.

The events were judged by renowned persons in the respective field.

In the concluding ceremony, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman and Mr. Devadas Hegde, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation delivered prizes to the winners. Prof. Umashankar, Dean Academics and Prof. Balakrishna, Vice Principal were present on the dais. The Department of Computer Science has emerged as the overall Champions by scoring highest points.

Ethnus Campus Recruitment Drive

SSTH 2016 event at Excellent PU College, Moodbidri Ethnus Consultancy Pvt. Ltd conducted the exclusive campus recruitment drive for the engineering students of the 2017 batch. Mr. Narthan Poovanna, Human Resources, Ethnus accompanied by panellists on the recruitment team was at the campus to facilitate the entire recruitment process. Sixteen students have been shortlisted for the final round of selection.

Swachch Mangaluru in Valencia area

SSTH 2016 event at Excellent PU College, Moodbidri The Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan as a part of Swachh Bharath mission scheduled a cleaning programme on 6th of November 2016 in Valencia area. “Swami Bodhaswarupanandaji of Ponnampet Ramakrishna Ashrama & Prof. Prabhakar B K, Department of Computer Science & Engineering jointly flagged off the drive. Students of first year engineering section “F” took part in the drive along with Ms. Mary Jency, Mr. Prabhakara B K, Ms. Nithisha Rodrigues and Ms. Shreelatha U A. Swamiji briefed the volunteers about the drive & its objectives. Swami Tyagishwaranandaji from Shivamogga Ramakrishna Math, Swami Ekagamyanandaji, Co-convener of Mangaluru Math and Capt. Ganesh Karnik, MLC visited the venue and encouraged the students. Mr. Prakash Garodi & Mr. Dhanush, volunteers from Ramakrishna Math, co-ordinated the event.

MBA Faculty invited as a Moderator for HR Conclave at JKSHIM, NITTE

SSTH 2016 Zonal Event at St. Philomina Pre-University College, Puttur Prof. Sushma V, Department of Business Administration was invited to moderate a session on “Engaging Talents in a Dynamic Business Environment” at JKSHIM, NITTE HR Conclave on “Managing Human Capital in the Dynamic Business Environment”. This session had three guests, out of which two belonged to corporate organization and Prof. Sushma V was invited from the academic institution. As a moderator of the session, she introduced the two main concepts – Dynamic Business Environment and Engaging Talents to the students by quoting herself as the most engaged employee who stayed in the organization till she won the pillar award which was possible due to her efficient leaders who constantly engaged her in managerial roles and challenging positions. She also emphasized the need to differentiate between a happy employee and an engaged employee. It was a great opportunity to meet the resource persons from Health Care and IT Sector and also influence them that the gap between management institutions and corporate organizations are diminishing due to more of corporate experts shifting their career to teaching.

The HR Team was guided on the key attributes of this award under each category and the best practices that may contribute and further win the prestigious Golden Peacock HR Excellence Award. SSTH 2016 event at Sri Bhuvanendra PU College, Karkala Ms. Reshma, an Alumna of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, currently pursuing her Masters, addressed the students of Computer Science & Engineering. During her interaction, she highlighted the importance of Aptitude and Academics. She made the students aware of the competition and struggle to get jobs off-campus. She also spent quality time interacting with the HOD and faculties of the department.

Students from various colleges all over the country had participated in the competition.

Guest Talk on “Significance of Fourier Series and Transforms in Engineering”

Guest Talk by Dr. Savita H M Department of Mathematics organized a guest lecture for the students of third semester Electronics and Communication Engineering on the topic “Significance of Fourier Series and Transforms in Engineering”. The session was engaged by Dr. Savita H M, the Department Head of Electronics and Communication Engineering, St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru.

In her talk, she enlightened the students on the applications of Fourier series and Fourier Transforms in various engineering fields. She also encouraged the students to find the applications of all the theory subjects what they learn in their classroom in order to become qualitative professionals.
