Grand Finale of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH) 2017

SSTH 2017 SSTH 2017, the annual event was held in Sahyadri Campus in the august presence of Prof. S N Omkar, Chief Research Scientist, Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Prof. Vijay H Desai, Senior Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, NITK, Suratkal, Mr. M V Subramanian, Co-Founder & Managing Director of Future Focus Infotech Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Basanagouda M Patil, Director, BLDE Association, Columnist & Writer, Deccan Herald & The Indian Express, President, MPATIL Foundation & Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

SSTH 2017 During the introductory remarks, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation cascaded that the reason to conduct SSTH is to generate interest about science & technology among budding talents. He emphasized on how SSTH helps to shift from studying engineering to learning engineering and finally living engineering. He highlighted that the current 1st year engineering students of Sahyadri who participated in SSTH 2016 are now making names at IIT’s & NIT’s by winning places. He also re-iterated that Science & Technology Conclave would be held during Jan 6th to Jan 10th’18 in Sahyadri which would be an International Forum for students & teachers who are passionate about Science.

Prof. S N Omkar, while addressing the gathering expressed his happiness to be at the event and the initiative of Sahyadri to collect talent pools & ignite their minds. He also said – in the current scenario we have ideas & concepts, however fail to take it to the consumers. He stimulated students to take their labs to life. He referred to the discoveries of renowned scientists & conveyed that the greatest inventions happened through simple experiments and not through major funding.

SSTH 2017 Mr. Vijay H Desai in his speech expressed his delight towards the exhibits of the day’s event. He urged students to take up their career on their area of interest and not through influencers. He encouraged faculty coordinators of SSTH from various colleges to invite professionals in engineering to their college and allow them to share their real life experiences to students which shall groom them in a most efficient manner.

SSTH 2017 Mr. M V Subramanian congratulated the participants of SSTH as they are half engineers already due to their interest in projects & models. Once they pursue their course they shall be complete engineers & not mere graduates. Mr. M V Subramanian expressed his interest to mentor students on entrepreneurship and also advised them to host their projects on social networking sites which can fetch them appreciation and feedback. He concluded his speech by stating that “the best way of learning is teaching your friends” hence emphasizing the importance of peer learning.

SSTH 2017 The day-long event witnessed students showcasing their talent in project & model competition. They had the opportunity to interact with the guests individually as well as through the panel discussion. The panelists for the day were overwhelmed by the event and congratulated Sahyadri for hosting the unique programme. The curtains of SSTH 2017 came down with the awarding of prizes to the winners.

Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt. Ltd, a Centre for Mechanical Engineering Start-Ups & Incubators was inaugurated at Sahyadri in the presence of Mr. Shreenadha Reddy Nayani, Mr. M V Subramanian, Mr. Vasanth Shetty, Mr. K Balakrishna Bhandary, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, Mr. S M Sunder, CEO, Caliper and Ms. Prasanna Bhandary, Director, Caliper.

Mr. Shreenadha Reddy Nayani is the Chairman & Managing Director of Sai Srushti Group (SSG), a conglomerate comprising of companies in real estate, education and energy. Before starting SSG, Mr. Reddy was the Vice-President of SiteLite Inc, a start-up based in Los Angeles, USA that provides web services monitoring software to global clients. Prior to that, he worked for Canon and OSI Consulting Inc in USA.

Sinchana 2017 Mr. Vasanth Shetty, Assistant General Manager is heading Canara Bank, Mangalore Circle which is having 460 branches spread across West Karnataka including Goa. In his career spanning 32 years, he has held many important positions in the Bank. He has been rewarded with many awards & accolades in recognition for his service to the Bank.

Mr. M V Subramanian is the Co-Founder & Managing Director of Future Focus Infotech Pvt. Ltd. (FFI), a premier IT Staffing & Software Consulting Services Company. Popular in the Investment community & respected for his keen business acumen, Mr. Subramanian is often consulted to ideate, incubate and model different start-up ideas through his association with TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) & IAN (Indian Angel Network).

Mr. K. Balakrishna Bhandary is the Chairman, SAMS Techno Mech Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai & Trustee, Bhandary Foundation. SAMS Techno Mech is one of India's leading solution providers in the field of formulation processing, serving the global pharmaceutical industry for more than 2 decades.

For the last consecutive 6 years Sahyadri has been the Overall Champions.

Calling Bell with Swachtha Tone

Calling Bell with Swachtha Tone Shri. Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi, Union Minister for Drinking Water & Sanitation, New Delhi during his visit to Sahyadri inaugurated the Calling Bell with Swachtha tone in the presence of Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary and Mr. Raghav Shetty, CEO, RDL Technologies.

This is an initiative by Dr. M R Ravi, CEO, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath towards cleanliness, thereby creating awareness among the general public by way of calling bell. This unique concept was presented by Dr. M R Ravi to the Sahyadri Management, in the presence of Faculty members and the Start up Team during his visit to Sahyadri earlier. As a response to the concept, a team of experts from the institute converted the concept into an end product by designing a calling bell with Swachtha tone imbibed in it. These calling bells have already been installed and are in use at the Dakshin Kannada Zilla Panchayath office. As a part of the Pilot programme, Sahyadri has expressed its willingness to partially sponsor for the cause in making of such calling bells.

CTO of Tayana Software Solutions speaks to the MBAs Mr. Rathan Rao Pathur, Chief Technical Officer, Tayana Software Solutions addressed the 1st year MBAs. He emphasised on the advancement of technology that has made life easier. He said while engineering is about thinking out of the box and being innovative, MBA is being more practical. He urged MBAs to have curiosity which leads to building case studies. When students ask “Why” questions, there comes involvement and further receives information and brings out innovation. Companies now look out for MBA Technocrats. He advised students to visit industries and get an exposure in a LIVE working environment along with a structured questionnaire including questions on HR, Marketing & Finance.

MBAs visit Bio Fuel Park, Hassan

MBAs visit Bio Fuel Park, Hassan Over ninety 2nd year students of MBA visited Bio Fuel Park at Shanthi Nagar, Hassan. Mr. Halesh, Training Staff, Bio Fuel Park, Hassan gave presentation on the topic – “The What, Why and How of Bio Fuel”. He also explained the opportunities available in Karnataka for Bio Fuel plants. Students had an interactive session with insights being received on the subject. Students had an opportunity to view the manufacturing process of Bio Fuel & also the various plants used as an input in Bio Fuel manufacturing. This visit shall pave the way to take up KSCST projects on Bio Fuel. Dr. Vidyavathi & Prof. K Abhaya Kumar, Dept. of Business Administration coordinated the visit.

Resume Writing Workshop facilitated by MBAs

Resume Writing Workshop facilitated by MBAs In addition to being on top of university curriculum, Sahyadri MBA gives experiential learning opportunities to students which provide them plenty to talk about in job interviews. It also gives them a chance to take the theories & strategies they have learnt in the classroom and put them into practice.

Athmeeya & Sangeetha K from the second year MBA facilitated a Resume Writing workshop for the first year MBA students. These real-world opportunities take our students beyond the classroom. Their session covered - the mandatory components in a Resume, a sample format, DO’s and DONT’s in drafting a Resume. Workshop concluded with the Q&A session. As a follow up action, first years have submitted first draft of their Resume’s to the seniors who will then revert with corrections if any, before preparing the Final Resume.

Similarly, Aptitude Test, GD Round and Face2Face Interview rounds will be conducted by the final year MBA HR students for the 1st year students of MBA. This shall expose the first year students to their forthcoming Job interview process in return shall also contribute to polishing the HR skills of the final year students.

Dr. S. Ramakrishna Sharma has joined the Dept. of Humanities as an Adjunct Professor. He has his M.A in English Literature from Mysore University & Ph.D in English Literature from DAVV, Indore (MP) and Ph.D in Sanskrit from Mangalore University. His area of interest is Research in Indian Scientific Heritage.

First year Engineering students attend Swacch Manas Seminar at Ramakrishna Mission  The students of First year engineering attended a seminar on “Swacch Manas - Awakening Young Minds”, organized by Ramakrishna Mission as a part of their Swacchata Abhiyana: Phase 4 at Ramakrishna Mission Matt, Mangaladevi.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mr. M R Vasudeva, Retd. Director of Mangalore International Airport with the divine presence of Swami Jitakamanadji, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru and Swami Muktidanandaji, Trustee of Belur Math, West Bengal. Swami Sarvasthanandaji, Minister in-charge of Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre, UK was the Chief Guest for the inaugural Ceremony. The inauguration was followed by two sessions by Prof. K Raghotham Rao, Director of Manas Training Academy, Bengaluru & Swami Muktidanandaji. Prof. K Raghotham Rao emphasized on the need for clean thoughts among the young mind so that it can motivate them to work selflessly for the betterment of the society. Swami Muktidananadaji spoke about the importance of spiritual awaking among youth.

Students Volunteer for Swacchata Abhiyana at Mangaladevi  Students of First year Engineering A & F section, volunteered for Shramadhan during the inaugural of Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyana: Phase 4. The Phase 4 of Swacchata Abhiyana was set in motion on Sunday, 5th November, 2017 by Ramakrishna Mission at Mangaladevi. The students volunteered to clean the premises around Ramakrishna Math & Mangaladevi Temple during 07:30 am to 09:30 am. Students worked with enthusiasm & zeal which was well appreciated by the Ramakrishna Math and the general public. First year faculty Prof. Prajwal M & Prof. Nisha, Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor and Mr. Navin Pilar, Department of Art & Culture accompanied the students during the Shramadhan.

Dr. Ananth Prabhu G interacts with the Mayor of Birmingham at the SDPS 2017  Dr. Ananth Prabhu G, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering had an opportunity to interact with Mr. William A Bell, Honourable Mayor of Birmingham at the SDPS conference 2017 at Birmingham, Alabama.

William A. Bell Sr. is an American politician who is the 28th mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. A member of the Democratic Party, he assumed office in 2010. Bell previously held the office on an interim basis in 1999.

Dr. Prabhu discussed about the various research & academic activities undertaken at Sahyadri and even invited the Mayor to visit the institution. Dr. Steven Fernandes, Assistant Professor in the Dept of Electronics & Communication Engineering at Sahyadri and Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Alabama Birmingham is the coordinator of SDPS 2017. Dr. Varadaraj Gurupur, Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida and Organizer of the SDPS was also present.

SDPS was incorporated in the State of Texas on September 6, 1995. The corporation is organized for educational and scientific purposes and shall be dedicated to the study, understanding and use of design and process science for the benefit of all people throughout the world. It is the vision of this Society to be a catalyst for change, enabling the discovery of new approaches that lead to alternative solutions for the increasingly complex problems that face civilization.

Student Counsellor invited as resource person for NSS Camp Educational Session

Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor was invited as the resource person by St. Agnes College (Autonomous) to conduct an educational session for the NSS students during their Annual Special Camp at the Government Higher Primary School, Ranipura, Munnur on the Topic “Self Analysis & Awareness”. Mr. Ankith spoke on Self, demonstrated the power of thoughts on objects and people and power of focused mind. Techniques of NLP and Johari Windows were used and explained to help students understand themselves and create awareness about their strength, weakness, opportunities and challenges.

Sahyadri Talent

Thrupthesh, first semester Electronics & Communication Engineering has excelled in Drawing. He has participated in various competitions at State & National Level. He has secured 4th place in State Level competition organized by Karnataka Pragathipura Yojana Seva Samste at Mandya in the year 2008. He has also excelled in Karate by winning 1st place in ‘Kata’ in the year 2008 organized by Institute of Bukokan Karate, Kundapura.

Shikha Shet from first semester Civil Engineering is a sports personality. She has participated in several competitions such as Throw-Ball, Athletics, High Jump & has also won prizes. She was part of the team which secured first place in District Level Throw-Ball tournament. She was a runner-up in 800 metres Athletics. She has also participated in High-jump event and won first place at intercollegiate level.

Basavarajeshwari Ambi, first semester Information Science & Engineering student is an all- rounder. She has cleared Phase -1 of National Leadership League conducted by Zee News in 2017. She was a runner-up in Handball nature at State Level in the year 2016. She secured Junior Grade in Bharatanatyam in the year 2013 & 'Higher Grade' in drawing in the year 2014. In National Cyber Olympiad, in National she secured 39th Rank & in state she has secured 1st Rank. In District level Speech, she has won places - I, II, III in different Academic years 2010, 2013 & 2014. She has received 'Prathiba Chetana' Award for Special Talent in the year 2014. She has also received 'Saraswati Puraskar award' at State level by Kala Kunja in the year 2015. To add to her list of achievements are the prizes won in Zonal & Taluk level in Singing (Carnatic), Bharatanatyam, Sports, Essay, Fancy dress, Drawing, Craft, Writing etc.

Apeksha V K, First Semester, Civil Engineering is a Dancing Talent. She has won in various competitions at National & State Level. She was first Runner-Up in Group Dance Competition held at National Level organized by Karavali Sangamotsava, Karwar in the year 2013. She has also secured first place in State Level Group Dance organized by Shree Devi Cricketers, Boloor in the year 2013.
