Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - SSTH 2018

Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) The Grand Finale of SSTH 2018 was inaugurated very differently by Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) initially by opening the ribbon, then Lighting the Lamp with other dignitaries and also by coding in one of the SSTH Projects named – “Mini CNC” (Computer Numerical Control) developed by the 1st PUC students of Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal which printed a copy saying - “SSTH 2K18 OPEN”.

Mr. Johnson Tellis, Project Co-ordinator gave a brief about SSTH, an annual event. He said it is a community initiative of Sahyadri and aims at imparting scientific knowledge in budding young enthusiasts. He mentioned that more than 100 colleges were reached out to, covering 15,000 students finally resulting in funding 300 projects of 1,500 students on the Grand Finale day. He said - during the course of SSTH event, the team has nurtured more than 100 scientific ideas.

Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Chief Guest - Dr. Karisiddappa, during his inaugural address, expressed his delight to be at Sahyadri where students of rural areas who are deprived of opportunities are given a forum with mentors from institute and industries. He said it is for the very first time in his 35 years of teaching career that he has participated in an event like this. He added that all scientific ideas come from the nature. Nature speaks to us and we should understand the nature’s language. If we understand this, we become globally renowned professionals. He urged the students to convert the projects to something which is beneficial to the society. He concluded his speech by re-iterating that the country will no longer be recognised for the wealth it has but only for the knowledge it possesses. Going forward, Knowledge Economy will be the talk of the town. The nation needs scientifically thinking students and Sahyadri is doing a great job in igniting the enthusiasm in the budding talents.

The in-house dignitaries - Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director–Sahyadri Group; Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman-Bhandary Foundation; Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-R&D; Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Deans; Trustees and HODs of all departments were present during the inaugural and the Valedictory ceremony.

Later, a Panel Discussion was organized to throw light on the topic – “How students can leverage the Digital Resources available to them”. Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Mr. Pranav Hebbar, Mr. Ved Prakash were the Panellists and Mr. Aakarsh Naidu was the Moderator of the Panel Discussion.

Highlights of the Discussion were as follows:
• LinkedIn, Facebook, Whatsapp and so on are the gateways to Digital future and students should utilize them effectively
• It is imperative to do Self Evaluation on Passion Vs Fascination
• Students should be encouraged to chase their passion where their competency lays
• Further reading on “Nidhi Mayurika – At 15, This Brilliant Bengaluru Girl has won a NASA Contest Thrice”. Nidhi went through the sites of various academic institutions and enrolled into courses on AstroBiology
• Digital Education is just like Democracy – Democratize your learning and every student has an opportunity to discover what you want to learn
• Language is not a barrier to learn and to build the nation
The event concluded with the distribution of Prizes of SSTH 2018 by the esteemed guests.

Sahyadri selected to establish IIC, as per the Innovation Cell, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has been selected for establishing Institution Innovation Council (IIC) as per the norms and directions of Innovation Cell, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. The institute has been invited for the inaugural function which is scheduled to be inaugurated by Hon’ble HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar on 21st November 2018 at 11:00 am at the AICTE HQs, New Delhi. The Institute Innovation Council is headed under the Presidentship of Dr. S. Manjappa, Director-R&D; Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Dr. Rajesha S, Dean-Academics; Dr. Anush Bekal, Convener; Mr. Prashanth S Duddela (Faculty Member); Mr. Hancy Rohan Crasta (Student Coordinator); Mr. Rajesh Naidu (Incubation Centre Representative); Mr. Francis Borgia (Lead Bank Representative); Mr. Raghav Shetty (Industry Expert); Mr. Johnson Tellis (Alumni representative); Dr. Arun M Isloor (Patent Expert) and fifteen student members of the host institution.

MRPL - SAHYADRI Inter-Professional-Collegiate Debate Competition 2018 in Sahyadri CampusMRPL - SAHYADRI Inter-Professional-Collegiate Debate Competition 2018 in Sahyadri Campus Mr. M V Rajeev Gowda is an Indian politician and academician. He holds a Ph.D from Wharton Business School, USA. He is a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha since July 2014 and a national spokesperson for the Indian National Congress. He currently serves as Chairman of the "CONGRESS RESEARCH DEPARTMENT". He was Professor of Economics and Social Sciences and the Chairperson of the Centre for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and taught a range of courses. He served as the Director of the Central Board, Reserve Bank of India.

Mr. Rajeev visited Sahyadri and interacted with the MBA students on “Indian Economy”. He walked the students through a graphical presentation on the Historic perspective of World GDP and also the place that India holds in GDP. He stressed on how India’s wealth was exploited in the past and other countries moved ahead due to industrialization. Under British rule our economy shrunk since they did not promote industrialization. He appreciated the words of Sir M Visvesvaraya which emphasised on “Industrialize or Perish”. Looking at the current statistics on GDP in India, he expressed his happiness in forecasting that India will be the third largest economy by 2040 and also said that India will be the fifth largest consumer market by 2025. He added – While rest of the world is ageing, India has a huge young population.

Students were encouraged to ask questions not only on matters related to Indian Economy but on anything that they wanted heads-up on. It was a great opportunity for the students to be directly interacting with such an eminent personality with vast experience in almost all spheres that contribute to the nation’s growth.

Representatives from RDL Technologies invited as speakers at Tech EDP 2018, NITK Representatives from RDL Technologies invited as speakers at Tech EDP 2018, NITK NITK STEP is an entrepreneurial driven self sustaining body for promotion of entrepreneurship. Tech EDP 2018, a Technology Based Entrepreneurship Development programme is a weeklong event at STEP showing experience and expertise drawn from various industry segments. Mr. Raghavendra G shetty and Mr. Pradeep Kumar C from RDL Technologies were invited speakers at this event.

As resource person, the team shared both entrepreneurial and technical experience on IoT, Software Defined Networks and Machine Learning with students and faculty drawn from multiple branches. Students expressed interest in contributing and being part of projects being executed at RDL and in the forthcoming days, a formal announcement in this regard can be anticipated. Companies from the Sahyadri campus have been recognized at NITTE MSME Conclave 2018 and RDL Technologies has won the “BEST PRODUCT INNOVATION” award. The award was handed over by Dr. Manjappa Sarathy at a glittering ceremony at Ocean Pearl in Mangaluru. This recognition is the manifestation of our goal orientation and commitment to provide both best-in class products as well as technical exposure to students. RDL profoundly thanks Dr. Molly S Chaudhuri who ensured their complete participation.

Management Development Programme – Digital MarketingManagement Development Programme – Digital Marketing Department of Business Administration organized a Management Development Programme on Digital Marketing. The first two days of the programme was held during 3rd and 4th of November. The Programme began with the inauguration by Mr. Vishal Patel, Associate Director-MetricStream, Bengaluru, the Chief Guest and the Resource person of the training. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA and Prof. Girish Madla, Coordinator of the programme were also present during the inaugural. Dr. Vishal welcomed the gathering and gave a brief highlight about college to the guest. She mentioned about the various MOUs signed by the college with various universities and companies.

Mr. Vishal Patel kickstarted the session by highlighting the difference between sales and marketing and the career opportunities in sales and marketing. The session was followed by introduction to Digital Marketing and topics like - finding out the 3 best and worst advertisements in the market were covered. He also made participants work on various tasks regarding creating a home page, page title and Meta description, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

A total of 36 students participated in the training programme.

A One-Day workshop on Digital Signal Processor TMS320C6748 was conducted for the pre-final year students of Electronics and Communication Department. Mr. Ganesh from Edgate Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru was the resource person. He gave a brief note on Analog and Digital signal processing, advantages of digital signal processing over Analog signal processing with emphasis on DSP applications. Various types of Microcontrollers were dealt with in detail during the session. The architecture of TMS320C6748 was thoroughly explained. He also demonstrated the application of Digital signal processing on TMS320C6748 processor. Students had hands-on experience on the processor. Session concluded with discussion on various domains of signal processing and its scope in electronics industries.

“Save Wildlife” - Awareness Programme for MBA students

Save Wildlife Save Wildlife
An awareness programme on Environment and Wildlife emphasising on Snakes was organized by Dept. of Business Administration and Sahyadri Health and Counselling centre in association with Save Wildlife Trust for the MBA students. The prime objective of the awareness programme was to create awareness about the wildlife ecology and snakes since there are a lot of myths and misconception about snakes, the different species and varieties. Mr. Kiran Pinto, popularly known as Snake Kiran facilitated the session. He explained about different varieties of venomous and non-venomous snakes and also the first aid procedures for snake bites. Mr. Dipin Poojary, President of Save Wildlife Trust and his team was present during the session.

“Be with Engineers”, a Two-Day pre-event of SSTH for Mentoring Projects

Outbound Training for MBAs in SakleshpurOutbound Training for MBAs in Sakleshpur As a part of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - SSTH 2018 which will be held on 10th Nov’18, “Be with Engineers” a Two-Day pre-event was held at Sahyadri. This programme intended to mentor 60 Best Project Teams by industries and give them hands-on training with Machines to improve their ideas. A total of 260 students participated from all over from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts. Mr. Johnson Tellis interacted with the young budding talents. This programme was organized with the objective to make the dreams of young talents amplified.

Delegates from CISCO Bengaluru visit Sahyadri Ms. Aradhana Prakash, Analyst IT Talent services & University programs, Cisco Bengaluru and Mr. Pawandeep Sethi, Manager-Business Development (APAC) visited Sahyadri. They interacted with Dr. Anush Bekal, Associate Professor and Faculty co-ordinator-Industry Connect (IC) and Mr. Johnson Tellis, CEO-Dreamers. While visiting various innovative labs and going around the campus, Mr. Johnson Tellis, explained about the various facilities and benefits created by the in-house industries to the students of Sahyadri. They were very much impressed with R&D initiatives and the infrastructure provided by Bhandary Foundation, to bridge the gap between fresh engineering graduates and current industry requirements. They have agreed to share the happenings at Sahyadri to the University Program team at CISCO. The Industry Connect team at Sahyadri will be looking forward for collaboration in terms of student internships which is currently a part of VTU academic curriculum.

Alumnus interacts with MBA Marketing Students

BEST PRODUCT INNOVATION Mr. Harsharaj Rai K C, an Alumnus of Department of Business Administration-MBA interacted with the 2nd year MBA Marketing Students.
After his completion of MBA in 2017, he was placed as Team Leader-Sales at Weiwo Communication Pvt Ltd (VIVO). He shared his retail sales experience at Bengaluru where he was initially handling 5 stores. He also informed the students that confidence and smartness is all that matters in sales. During the last one year he has not taken a single leave, hence he could focus on his work and is currently promoted as a Territorial Sales Manager leading a team of 42 Team Leaders and also handling around 115 stores. He stressed on the fact that students should not restrict to their job alone, but widen their scope which would help them grow faster.

MBA Faculty facilitates a session on “HR Analytics” at JKSHIM Nitte

HR Analytics Prof. Sushma V, Dept. of Business Administration was invited at JKSHIM Nitte to facilitate a half day Hands-On session on “HR Analytics” for its MBA Students. Sushma was deputed by Sahyadri for a Short Term Course on “Hands-On HR Analytics” at IIT Kharagpur in the year 2015. Since then, she has been actively engaged in HR Analytics and developing herself on this current trending topic. During her session, she has not only introduced the concept of “HR Analytics” to the students but has also shared Case Studies and HR Analytics Tools that the corporate organizations use for their studies. This session was well appreciated by the students and faculty of JKSHIM Nitte.
