Karnataka Rajyotsava Celebrated

The 59th Karnataka Rajyotsava was celebrated in the Sahyadri Campus with singing of the state anthem glorifying the state by the students of Sahyadri Educational Institutions. Dr. Chinnappa Gowda, Professor & Director, Yakshagana Study Centre, Mangalore University, the Chief Guest, inaugurated the celebrations as well as ‘Sinchana – 2014’. In his address, he recounted the glorious history of the state. In his thought provoking speech he spoke about the significance of language and culture and the respect to be accorded to them. Instead of fighting for language and culture one should share and experience every language and every culture. It shouldn’t divide people, but it should bridge the divide, he added. He quoted the author, late Dr. U. R. Anantha Murthy’s words, “I get pleasure in writing in Kannada even though I am a professor of English.” Our rich heritage is strength and should not be considered as weakness. He quoted Buddha and said, “We should have faith and respect towards one’s own language.” The 21st century should be celebrated in our state for the reasons that we are living in a democratic system and all have proved that they are equal including women. Quoting the late Ha.Ma.Nayak, the academician and writer he said that with all the wisdom and knowledge acquired human beings do not respond in a humane way.

Speaking about Sinchana-2014, he referred to Abraham Lincoln’s letter written to his son’s headmaster, where Lincoln wrote that one should accept defeat and should not attain success through underhand means and one should not be driven solely by competition but should feel and experience the event. He wished the gathering and gave a call to be humane and respect each other, accept defeat gracefully and only then will one’s personality bloom in society.

Mr. Jagannath Chowta, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation was the President of the function. Rajyotsava – The Festival of Karnataka

The Rajyotsava Day is the state festival of Karnataka and is observed on the first of November every year. The day is celebrated to commemorate the formation of the state. The heart of the Kannadiga is epitomized in the Kannada flag which is divided into two horizontal strips of equal length and breadth with a yellow strip on the top and a red strip at the bottom. The Yellow and Red signify Peace and Courage respectively.

In the year 1956, all Kannada speaking regions of South India were merged into one state. The new state was named after Mysore, which by itself was a princely state. The name Mysore was not accepted by some regions like North Karnataka and Hyderabad of the present time and people residing in these areas demanded a change in the name of the state. Finally, after a prolonged discussion over the issue, in the year 1973, the state was renamed as Karnataka on the first day of November.

The Rajyotsava day is celebrated with great joy and vigor all over the state of Karnataka. The state government confers the Rajyotsava awards on this day, which are awarded to people responsible for great contributions in the development of Karnataka. The celebration is marked by multicolored tableaus.

The colorful procession is also accompanied by stunning performances of the folk artists in the fields of drama, dance, classical music, etc.
