Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan - 2016 The Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan as a part of Swach Bharath mission had a cleaning programme organized at Kankanady area. Swami Dharma Vrithanandaji of Ramakrishna Mission flagged off the drive and addressed the students. Vice Principal, Prof . Balakrishna, Dean academic Prof . Umashanker, A.A.O, Mrs. Shreelatha and few faculties along with first year students from C & D section had taken part in the cleaning drive. The mutt had provided with cleaning materials, including brooms, gloves etc. along with motivational T-shirts and banners.

Sahyadri Green Cell Kicks off with an initiative of Medicinal Plants Garden Sahyadri Green Cell Kicks off with an initiative of Medicinal Plants Garden Medicinal Plants have a great role in human life and in ecology. Karnataka has rich diversity of medicinal plants. To increase the awareness among students and society about the importance of medicinal plants, Sahyadri has taken an initiative to develop a medicinal plants garden within the campus under the initiative of Sahyadri Green Cell. As a first move to kick start the activity, Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Chairperson, Green Cell accompanied by the Green Cell committee members and Green Cell student volunteers planted the very first medicinal plant with an objective of establishing the medicinal plant garden to serve to its right cause.

Highlights of the talk included - Information about the scope of civil engineering in modern day, Difference between infrastructure and real estate companies, Job opportunities for civil engineers, Recruitment process involved in T3-Urban Developers Ltd., Basic requirement for a civil engineer apart from academics, Various job designation in civil engineering field, Reason for less opportunity for female civil engineers and Role of civil engineers in quality control.

Faculty Development Program on “Teaching Pedagogy for undergraduate teachers”

Faculty Development Program on “Teaching Pedagogy for undergraduate teachers” Department of Business Administration hosted one day Faculty Development Program on “Teaching Pedagogy for undergraduate teachers”. This programme was designed to train and develop professionals in teaching and to enhance their capacities in guiding and motivating students with practical exposure. This programme also emphasized on promoting values and nurturing culture that facilitates academic and professional development of teachers. 57 teachers from various colleges took active participation in the programme. The day began with a brief inaugural session in the presence of the Chief Guest Dr. Panduranga Nayak, Principal, SVS College, Bantwal. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management presided over the function. Dr. Vishal Samartha Director, Department of Business Administration welcomed the gathering. Chief Co-ordinators Prof. Padmanabha and Prof. Abhay Kumar oversaw the successful execution of the day long programme.

Dr. Panduranga Nayak in his inaugural address spoke on the humongous transformation teaching methods has undergone. He advocated teachers to embrace new technology in order to cater to the tech savvy students. He called upon the teachers to use varied pedagogy like group discussion, seminars, case analysis in order to make teaching interesting and engage the students.

The first session was handled by Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal on “Case Based Teaching”. He started his session by quoting “Education is for the Life”. He emphasized that every aspect of education is a case. He made the session lively by giving wonderful example of his own life. He advocated the teachers to teach students in an effective way as each student will be unique individual and will receive information according to his perception. He concluded his session by calling upon teachers to enjoy their profession which will help them to deliver their best.

The Second session was taken up by Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director, Department of Business Administration on “training through audio/visual and social media”. She mainly focused on the usage of technological tools. She helped the teachers in knowing various devices that can be handy for an effective teaching in a classroom. She encouraged the gathering on online courses such as MOOC, AMCAT, LMS etc.

The final session for the day was facilitated by Prof. Ramesh K. G and Prof. Girish Madla on “Technology Enabled Learning”. They enlightened the teachers on the advantages of E Learning Modules and gave them awareness of the advantages of Tech based learning.

Guest Lecture for MBA Marketing Students on “Trends of Indian Consumer” Mrs. Niveditha Mirajkar, Management Consultant and Business Developer, Mangalore addressed second year MBA Marketing students on the topic, “Trends of Indian Consumer”. In her session, she highlighted features of Indian consumers and addressed the students on various aspects influencing the trends of Indian Consumers. She also spoke on celebrity influence on the consumers while advertising a product and on how the social media influences the consumers to buy the product. The session included activities and videos on consumption patterns of Indian consumers.

Zonal event of SSTH-2016 held at The Prestige International School (PIS) Zonal event of SSTH-2016 held at The Prestige International School (PIS) Two High schools and Two PU Colleges (Yenopoya and Prestige) participated in The Zonal event of SSTH-2016 held at The Prestige International School (PIS). Around 20 projects were exhibited. The Sahyadri team f co-ordinators comprising of Dr. C K Manjunath, Mr. Vikas G, Ms. Shruthi, Mr. Prasad Chandran N, Mr. Nishanth Kothari, Ms. Babitha, Ms. Akshatha, Mr. Ajay were a part of this event.

Dr. Manjunath C K, Prof. of Humanities & Administrator, the coordinator of SSTH-2016 gave a brief insight on SSTH and its importance in the student’s career. More than 150 students were part of project exhibition and students were also felicitated with certificates.

Blood Donation Camp

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management (Civil Department & NSS Unit) in association with Lions Club, Bendoorwell, Mangalore and Indian Red Cross Society, Mangalore with the help of KMC hospital, Mangalore and Wenlock Hospital had organized a Blood Donation Camp at Sahyadri campus, Nethravathi Auditorium.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Arun Shetty, District Governor, 317 D, Lions Club by offering a bouquet to our Principal, Dr. U M Bhushi, who was the first donor of today’s Blood Donation camp and thanked Sahyadri for the opportunity. Dr. Sharath Kumar, Blood Bank Officer, Wenlock Hospital, addressed the gathering and briefed about the importance of blood donation. Mr. Nagesh Kumar, District Coordinator, Blood donation camp and Mr. Edward Vas, Blood Bank In-charge, Indian Red Cross Society, Mangaluru were present on the occasion.

Sahyadri ranked 2nd amongst the Promising Pvt. B-Schools & 16th amongst the Pvt. B-Schools in Karnataka

GHRDC-CSR B-School Survey 2016 conducted by GHRDC has ranked Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore as 2nd amongst the Promising Pvt. B-Schools and 16th amongst the Pvt. B-Schools in the state of Karnataka.

GHRDC being highly research - based organization, has been the pioneer in starting the concept and practice of rating and ranking B-Schools from the very inception of its organization and has since (1998) been involved in rating and ranking of B- Schools in India. This was followed by initiating the Survey and Ranking of Hotel Management Institutes in the year 2007 and Engineering College Survey since 2009.

The unique feature of GHRDC’s Survey methodology takes into consideration the holistic performance of an institute, considering both qualitative and quantitative factors together with relative and absolute value of each factor, which provide insight into an institute in all respects.

The result is being published in November 2016 issue of Competition Success Review Magazine.

Research article entitled “Design of low-power, 1V 8-bit 125fJ Asynchronous SAR ADC with Binary Weighted Capacitive DAC” authored by Prof. Anush Bekal, Department of Electronics & Communication has been accepted for publication in Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers (SCI-E) which would be published in vol. 26, No. 5, May 2017.

Ltd., Shakila Banu, Cascademic Solutions, Bengaluru, Abdullah Khan, iWave Systems Technologies, Bengaluru, and Dr. Nalini Bhat & Harshada Tawde, BARC Hospital, Anushaktinagar, Mumbai, got published in an International Journal, Academia and Society, Vol 3, Number 1, October 2016 edition.

Sahyadrian excels in the Art of Music

Sahyadrian excels in the Art of Music Mr. Abhishek M B, Flute Performer, a student of 1st year Mechanical Engineering gave a solo flute performance in the musical concert organised by Sangeetha Prishath Mangaluru (R). He has won several awards like Kalashree Award (2013) for Creative Performing Arts (Flute), Aralu Mallige Award (2014) and Yuva Sourabha Award (2016). He has contributed immensely to the art of music by giving a flute performance on Akashavani, Mangalore in the Araluva Prathibhe Series and also in Alvas Virasat. He has also featured on Chandana Channel.

Federal Bank pooled campus drive The Zonal event of SSTH-2016 was held at Sharada PU College, Mangaluru. Around ten teams participated in the project competition. SSTH Coordinators, Ms. Shetty Mamatha Gopal, Associate faculty from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Mr. Nishanth, CEO, DTLabz evaluated the projects. Certificates for participation as well as to the winners were distributed during the valedictory ceremony.
