19th VTU State Level Inter-Collegiate Power Lifting competition was organized by Sahyadri in the campus19th VTU State Level Inter-Collegiate Power Lifting competition was organized by Sahyadri in the campus Mr. Devdas Hegde, Trustee-Bhandary Foundation was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural Function. He declared the 19th VTU Power Lifting competition open and inaugurated the event by unveiling the power lifting weights. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal gave the Presidential address post which, events of various categories were conducted. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman was the Chief Guest of the Valedictory Ceremony and he gave away the prizes to the winners.

19th VTU State Level Inter-Collegiate Power Lifting competition was organized by Sahyadri in the campus In the Girls Section, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management emerged as the Overall Champions. Global Academy of Technology (GAT) Bengaluru were Overall Runner-up & JNNCE, Shimoga were Overall Third Place.

In Boys Section, the Overall Champions were NMAMIT, Nitte and Overall Runner-up was shared among JNNCE, Shimoga, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru.

16 New Meet records were created in this competition. A total of 140 boys & 45 girls participated in this event from various engineering colleges of Karnataka.

Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2018 Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2018 Department of Business Administration is organizing a One-Week Induction Programme for MBA Students of 2018-20 Batch. The Day One of the programme began with an introductory speech by Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA who gave a glimpse of Sahyadri and the various achievements of the college. She also spoke about the laurels achieved by the engineering as well as management students in IIT’s and IIM’s.

Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal urged the students to groom their future in the following two years and make the best use of all the opportunities and facilities provided by the college.

Mr. Loyson Paes, Senior Learning Partner HR, Danske IT, Bengaluru was the Chief Guest of the inaugural programme and during his speech emphasized on the “The ultimate potentials of Human Brain”. He gave a brief introduction about his career and also shared the 3 mistakes he committed during his MBA giving hints that students should not do such mistakes. He explained the importance of having a control on one's brain.

Afternoon session was conducted by Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning and Prof. Girish Madla. They addressed the students and briefed them about the Placements, Internships and the Industry visits at Sahyadri. Prof. Padmanabha B, briefed the students on the Discipline aspects and gave a glimpse about the entire academic year and all the activities which are to be conducted for the current year. Finally, Dr. Rajesh, Dean of Academics addressed the students on the implementation of “Outcome Based Education”.

Alumnus interacts with 3rd Semester Mechanical Engineering StudentsSahyadri, supporting partner of PRAXIS 2018 in Hyderabad, by deputing student volunteers and faculty Mr. Mahesh Kinila, an Alumnus of Mechanical Engineering Department presently working with Saicorp Industrial Trailer Bengaluru as a Design Engineer interacted with Third Semester Mechanical Engineering Students. In his address, he pointed the importance of industry exposure and also problem analysis & solving skill in the industry. He also stressed on the importance of GATE and Aptitude which is critical to gain entry to core companies for jobs. He motivated students to utilize the various facilities made available in the campus for the benefit of the students and capitalize on the same. He expressed to offer a helping hand in terms of industry connects and is continuously in touch with Prof. Suhas and Prof. Vaishak on this regard.

Conclusion of Three-Day workshop for Non-teaching staff at RIMSE The Three-Day workshop on Value education at Ramakrishna Institute for Moral and Spiritual Education, Mysore for the Non-Teaching staff was concluded with a positive outcome for all the participants. This programme had various value-oriented sessions for the non-teaching staff which are essential for both personal as well as professional growth. The workshop included, prayer session, yoga and meditation and educational sessions by eminent resource persons. The non-teaching staff gave their feedback during the valedictory and also performed group and solo singing. Ms. Shreelatha U A, Academic Administrative Officer and Mr. Ramesh Bhandary, Finance Officer, Bhandary Foundation, were the guest for the valedictory and Srimat Swami Mahesathmanandaji Maharaja, Correspondent of RIMSE presided over the function.

Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanthi Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanthi The Commemoration of Gandhiji and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanthi was held at Sahyadri on 2nd October, 2018. Dr. Vishanz Pinto, Associate Professor of History and Dean of Faculty of Arts, St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru was invited as the Chief Guest for the occasion. While addressing the gathering, he spoke about the Life and Ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri and motivated the students to get inspiration from the life and work of these great individuals. The programme also included a Bhajan session and a brief Pranayama breathing exercise for the students. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal addressed the students about the importance of the day and their responsibility of honouring the great sacrifice of freedom fighter who gave their life for our freedom.

During this occasion the winners of 'Conceptual Prototype Competition’ which was held on 29th September, 2018 were announced and awarded. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal addressed the students about the rational of the programme and thanked the resource person for being a part of the programme.

Brand Mangaluru Friendship Cricket Tournament 2018Brand Mangaluru Friendship Cricket Tournament 2018 On account of Gandhi Jayanthi, Press Club of Mangaluru in association with Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management organized "Brand Mangaluru” Friendship Cricket Tournament 2018 at Sahyadri Cricket Ground.

The event was participated by Police Commissioner Cricket Team, Deputy Commissioner Cricket Team, Superintendent of Police Cricket Team, Media City, Media Rural Cricket Team and Sahyadri Cricket Team.

The event saw the presence of Mangaluru Police Commissioner Mr. T R Suresh; Deputy Commissioner of Police Ms. Uma Prashanth; Mr. Sujith, Additional SP, Dakshina Kannada; Mr. Sunil Shetty, International Athlete and Mr. Srinivas Nayak, President of Working Journalist Union, Mangaluru during the inaugural and closing ceremony of the tournament.
City Commissioner Cricket Team, Mangaluru emerged as the Winner and Mangaluru DC Cricket Team were the Runners-Up.

Day Two of Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2018Day Two of Induction Programme for MBA Batch 2018 Mr. V Ramani Venkat, NLP Trainer facilitated a day-long session for the new batch of MBA on the topic “Classroom to Boardroom”. He informed the students on important skill sets required to become a successful MBA. He also conducted a session on “Gamification” which is a simulation of an actual business environment. He threw light on succession planning; nine box theory and talent management through these games. It also included basic concepts of marketing. The students thoroughly enjoyed the session and also had a rich learning experience. Post Lunch, a Case study was carried out stressing on application of knowledge in the business world.

Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanthi Commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanthi The first session of the day was facilitated by Ms. Nithasha Shetty, Image Consultant and Corporate Trainer. Her session was on “ABCD of Image Management” – Appearance, Body Language, Clothes Power/Communication and Digital Presence.

The next session was on “Story Telling: Journey from a Job Seeker to a Job Creator and now managing both” by Ms. Shipra Rai. She is an individual contributor managing the portfolio of ‘Diversity & Inclusion’ at Mphasis Pvt Ltd. She is also an entrepreneur owning Spindrift and Thyme Family Restaurant in Mangaluru. Shipra re-iterated Maslow’s Need Hierarchy and stressed that his theory was applicable to everyone, in any point of time in life and that it pushes every individual upwards to take risk and also achieve. She said being an entrepreneur is fulfilling and at the same time it is extremely challenging. She also appreciated the good mix of Gender parity in the 1st year MBA.

Post Lunch, Prof. Udaykumar from SDM Law College held a session on “Stress Management” and spoke on how to overcome Stress in terms of exams, profession and life in general. He advised the students on how to develop a positive attitude and overcome the daily stress that we go through in this fast-paced world. He shared anecdotes and real life examples to engage students in the session.

Next session of the day was by Dr. Habeeb Rahman, Chairman & Managing Director, Unity Health Group –Mangaluru. He motivated students to perform and said that Management education is the best education in the world. He also conveyed that Mother is the best nature created manager on the earth. He urged students to read motivational books, have gratitude and build great network.

The afternoon session was conducted by Mr. Abhijith Karkera on “Spontaneity”. He carried out several activities which brought out the essence that we don’t get much time to take decision in this fast-paced world.

FLAMES - Student Association Inaugurated FLAMES - Student Association Inaugurated FLAMES (Fulfilling Aspirations of Mechanical Engineering Students) a student association of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for the academic year 2018-19 was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr. Pavithran Alokkan, President and Head - Shipyard, Bharathi Defence & Infrastructure Ltd Mangaluru. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pavitran stressed on the importance of Mechanical Engineering and advised the students to be disciplined in their approach. He also called on students to inculcate a sense of time management to be a successful engineer. Further, he also spoke on the importance of academics and asked students to harness necessary skills by undergoing internships. He also appreciated Sahyadri for raising the state-of-the-art infrastructure that includes an in-house production industry ‘Caliper’. The event also saw the presence of Sahyadri alumni – Mr. Abhijith Karkera (2013 batch); Sandesh Achar (2016 batch) and Mr. Bhavik Das (2017 batch). Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal spoke encouragingly on the endeavours of the department and wished the association a successful year ahead. He also expressed his whole hearted support towards the working of the association. Prof. Mahesh B Davanageri, President of FLAMES & HOD of the Department, gave introductory remarks. Mr. Devdas Hegde, Trustee-Bhandary Foundation; Dr. Ravichandra Rangappa, Dean-Industry Connect; Mr. Sunder, CEO, Calipers Engineering & Lab Pvt Ltd also graced the function. During this occasion, the academic achievers were felicitated by the Chief Guest which was followed by a Cultural Programme.

Sahyadri gets the status - 12 (B) of UGC act 1956 by University Grant Commission, Government of India

Sahyadri is one among the few colleges of the State which has been recognized by the Apex Body of Government of India. With this recognition, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru has become eligible to receive Central assistance grants for projects, funding for students and faculty, for overall development of the Institute and in higher education.

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management is now declared fit to receive Central assistance in terms of Rules framed under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956. Faculty & Students can now also receive UGC's support in respect to projects related to Technical education & Management. This recognition is based on infrastructure facilities available in the college and also the quality of education imparted to students.

Dr. Rathishchandra R. Gatti, Principal Investigator and Dr. S Manjappa Sarathi, Director Research and Research Advisor of the Indo-Denmark DST-IFD Grant application presented the project titled "Developing The Next-generation Oscillating Wave Surge Converter For Electricity Generation And Desalination In Southern Peninsular Region Of India” at Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi.

The proposed project is a joint collaboration of Sahyadri, NIT-Silchar, IIT Bombay, MIT Manipal, NDRF, New Mangalore Port Trust, Caliper on the Indian side and Aalborg University and Wavepiston Company on the Denmark side.

Caliper manufactured nuclear reactor components becoming 3rd Company to do so in India Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt Ltd successfully manufactured 3 nuclear reactor components in special steel, import substitution for NPCIL, Kudankulam, which needs to go-thru’ tricky heat treatment process as well as very difficult machining contours on a very hard material. Only two other companies in India are handling these parts and Caliper achieved this herculean task within its first year of inception.

Maithri won 2nd place in 100 Metres Butterfly and she has also been selected to represent VTU at All India inter university Swimming competition.
