One day workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights: Significance in Business and Research”

Intellectual Property Rights: Significance in Business and Research Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, in association with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Karnataka and Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), organized a day-long workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights: Significance in Business and Research”.

Inaugural session was started with a prayer by the college choir. Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director (R&D), welcomed the dignitaries and gave the keynotes about the workshop. He shared the benefits of launching intellectual property (IPR) cell in Sahyadri. Shri. Gokuldas Nayak, Joint Director, DIC, Mangaluru was the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony. He emphasized the importance of patenting in today’s world. He also added that India is the treasure house of knowledge and it is our duty to protect it by IPR. He appreciated Sahyadri for launching an exclusive IPR cell and also for organizing an IPR workshop for the benefits of researchers, faculties and students.

Prabhavathi Rao, Program Coordinator, IP Initiatives, VTPC, Dept. of Industries & Commerce, Government of Karnataka, shared the trends in Intellectual Property Ecosystem and also highlighted the initiatives from Government of Karnataka, Centre for Export Promotion towards this. Adding to that she gave a golden rule for patenting that anything which is pre-existing in digital form cannot be patented and also emphasized to respect others intellectual properties.The inaugural ceremony is followed by various technical sessions.

The first technical Session was on “Demystifying the Intellectual Property Rights Spectrum” by Dr. Arvind Viswanathan, Senior IP Specialist & Formerly with GE Caps, in which he introduced the various IP tools – Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks, Industrial Designs, Semiconductor layouts & integrated circuits, Plant Variety Protection, Geographical Indications, Traditional Knowledge and Trade Secrets. He also added the benefits of these tools to potential Inventors and Entrepreneurs and discussed how to leverage these tools effectively in their business and research. The significance of IP protection and respect for one’s IP was also highlighted.

This was followed by a session “Innovations in IP” by Shri Mohan S G, (Consultant, Patent Information Centre, Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology, KSCST). He spoke about the role of KSCST in promoting Intellectual Property Right (IPR) and various initiatives for stakeholders. He also highlighted that the criteria for filing patent are novelty, inventive step or non-obviousness and Utility. In addition he emphasized the importance of applying for a provisional patent whenever a novel idea strikes in one’s mind, which can prevent others from claiming his inventions. He also shared the number of patents filed from different institutions in India and added that he is looking forward to see Sahyadri in top 3 positions among other premium Institutions.

Afternoon session started with the topic “Intellectual Property and the Technology Space” by Dr. Farah Deeba, Senior IP Specialist and Former Principal Scientist, Monsanto. This session highlighted the IP Protection of computer software related Inventions, Copyrights, plagiarism and ethical issues in research.

In addition to this, Dr Deeba introduced the initiatives, such as, Creative Commons, Open Source Model of IP sharing and Copy left. The Session had also awaken academia on key alerts during the Research process and how one could as a Researcher ensure that any significant IP could be protected before making a publication. She highlighted the Mantra “Publish and Perish”, “File and Prosper”. Dr Deeba’s next session was on the topic “Towards a robust IP Cell Management at Sahyadri”. In this session she highlighted the benefits of the launch of IP Cell at Sahyadri College with VTPC, Govt. of Karnataka and KSCST, as knowledge partners. She also explained the various steps involved in IP Cell Management and the way forward in nurturing the cell. She further discussed the institutional nurturing of IPR and provided a roadmap for IP Asset Development and Innovation Management. She also emphasized on the significance of IP Strategy, IP Policy, Key Elements of IP Cell, Significance of IP audit and other operational issues.

The last technical session was on “Patentability Subject Matter and Prior Art Search” by Dr. Arvind Viswanathan, Senior IP Specialist, formerly with GE Caps. This session focused on the process of patenting such as preview of patent filing mechanisms and procedures involved in it. He elaborated on what is patentable and not as per law. The concepts of Prior Art and Patent Search, the soul of the patenting system were also a part of the deliberations. The Technical Sessions were followed by a Panel Discussion and Valedictory Session.

Sahyadri is graced by the visit of Mr. Subramanian Sivakumar and Mr. M. Manjunath Mr. Subramanian Sivakumar, CEO, Pratian Group of Companies, a serial entrepreneur, startup adviser and a servant leader, and Mr. M. Manjunath, an IT industry expert for two decades, visited Sahyadri Campus. They interacted with Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman and Mr. Johnson, Head of Sahyadri Hub for Innovations and Entrepreneurship – SHINE. They discussed about planning on establishing Center of Excellence at Sahyadri.

Both guests were spellbound by the student-centric initiatives of Sahyadri. They expressed their thoughts and suggestions as to how things could be taken forward and scaled up in order to benefit the organization and the nation.

Mr Subramanian Sivakumar specializes in Systems Approach to Innovation, Strategy, Designing Best Total Solutions, Breakthrough Cost Innovation, Digital Transformation Strategy, Software Architecture, Design, and Innovative Learning Models. He has worked on large complex projects, leading with enthusiasm and working with people and customers from different geographies, cultures and time zones.

Some of the companies that have professionally engaged him are Microsoft, Cisco, HP, Oracle, IBM, Siemens, GE, Accenture, Sun Micro Systems, Philips, Cerner and Amadeus. He has:
• Designed and implemented the Digital Strategy for one of the largest ecosystems in US Healthcare, integrating Healthcare professionals with IT professionals in a complex multi-vendor, multi-location delivery model. This platform has generated offers from investors in US to the tune of US$ 100 Million.
• Successfully scaled the Healthcare IT vertical in 24 months by hand-picking 135 ‘super talented’ engineers, and inspired the team to build a suite of products for the US markets.
• Designed a scalable and robust Talent Acquisition Model for assessing over 100,000 tech talent globally.
• Has mentored over 3,000 senior professionals in leading IT Majors and Fortune 500 companies on Design, Patterns, Software Architecture, Estimation and High Performance Code.

Mr. Subramanian envisions an interconnected world of Global Innovation Hubs which allows people from diverse cultures and skill set to solve global and hyper local problems. He places hope on young talent for breakthrough innovation and aspires to incubate a 1,000 successful startups.

First Year Engineering students win places in Technical fest at NIT, WarangalFirst Year Engineering students win places in Technical fest at NIT, Warangal By the support of Dtlabz and under the mentoring of Thruptesh V, students of 1st year Engineering participated in various events like Hovercraft, Line follower and thrust in the recently held fest at National Institute of Technology, Warangal.

Team Trojans consisting of 16 students have occupied 6th place in Hovercraft, 4th and 7th position in Line follower and 7th place in Thrust events.

Proud moment for them was that the other teams which attended the events were consisting of students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year; however the team of Sahyadri were from first year.

Indian Ordinance Factories approved Caliper as a supplier

Indian Ordinance Factories approved Caliper as a supplier Mr. Praveen Kumar, Works Manager along with his Quality Engineer, from Indian Ordinance Factory, Trichy (a Defence Establishment) audited Caliper to include as vendor. After interacting with Caliper Team, Ordinance Factory approved Caliper to be part of their supply chain. Formal certificate will be issued soon. With this, Caliper can now supply goods & services directly to all 41 Ordinance Factories located all over India. They also visited RDL, DT Labs & were taken through the college.

Team Sahyadri selected as Bengaluru Finalists at the IESA Makeathon 2018

Team Sahyadri selected as Bengaluru Finalists at the IESA Makeathon 2018 "IESA Makeathon" an IESA initiative to enable the maker community in India, drives technology innovation for the semiconductor and electronic systems industry in India. IESA Makeathon is an annual event to identify high potential projects for Incubation, funding and Mentorship. Team Sahyadri is one of the five finalist teams from Bengaluru selected by Jury for the Grand Finale at Delhi on 14th December 2018.

The highlight of the event - Industry and Academia jointly from Sahyadri participated at this event in Bengaluru. Nithin Kumar T from 5th Semester Electronics & Communication Engineering and Pradeep Kumar from RDL jointly participated in the event. It was a 36 hours non-stop over night event to build and demonstrate Visible Light Communication LiFi based data communication solutions on the floor.

Sahyadri Management Student’s Association (SMSA) InaugurationSahyadri Management Student’s Association (SMSA) Inauguration Sahyadri Management Student’s Association (SMSA) was inaugurated by Mr. Yathish Baikampady, CEO, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project. Sampath, Child Artist in the leading role of the recent super hit Kannada movie – “Sarkari Hiriya Prathamika Shale, Kasaragod” also graced the occasion. Sampath is the nephew of Mrs. Vanitha, Office Staff of MBA Department. Mr. Akshay Somayagi, Proprietor of Aakar Creations, Laser Cutting & Engraving, was also a part of the ceremony. He is the Alumni of Sahyadri MBA.

Mr. Yathish during his inaugural address urged the Student Council to meet regularly every week without disturbing the regular classes. He said - MBA certificate is not everything. It will only give support. It is more like entering into the war field without gadgets. Hence one should equip themselves with the life skills. Give more importance to communication skills. He stimulated students to think of starting business with their group of friends as Sahyadri Campus has lot of energy in the form of facilities readily available to the students to get into entrepreneurship. He also said - he doesn’t want the Student Council to pick up thrash in the beach but wants them to create a system so that these things are taken care by itself regularly.

The office bearers were lead through oath taking by Prof. Samarth Shenoy. Mr. Shainith Shetty, President of SMSA shared the Plan of Action of the Academic Year 2018-19.

Session on IEEE Xplore Digital Library Session on IEEE Xplore Digital Library Mr. M S Srinivasa, Training Manager at EBSCO Information Services which is the official partner of IEEE India, conducted a session on “Effective Utilization of IEEE Xplore – Less search, More research”. The session covered various features of the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Mr. Srinivasa instructed on ways to effectively segregate content to get the desired results and methods of filtering research papers. He showed easier ways to share content and collaborate effectively between groups using the digital library. Tools for better assimilation and publication of research papers were introduced. Features that help users keep tabs on the latest developments in technology were also discussed.

SLK Software Services Pvt. Ltd. SLK Software Services Pvt Ltd. conducted a pool campus recruitment drive for the engineering students of 2019 outgoing batch. Around 725 students from the pool colleges had participated in the recruitment process. A Twelve-member recruitment team headed by Mr. Amit Rane, HR-SLK Software, were at the campus to facilitate the entire recruitment process. A total of 23 Sahyadrians have been selected by the company.

KPMG-GDC Campus Recruitment driveKPMG-GDC Campus Recruitment drive KPMG-GDC team visited Sahyadri to conduct a pool campus recruitment drive for the outgoing MBA students. The drive started with a pre placement talk by Mr. Badri Subbarao Bangaru, Executive Director, KPMG-GDC. Ms. Lakshmi Venkatesh and Mr. Hardik Shah from the recruitment team were present on the occasion.

In total 93 students appeared for the aptitude test out of which 67 got shortlisted for the next round of personal interview. Final results are awaited.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty visited Lamina Suspensions Products LTD Mangaluru Prof. Suhas, Prof. Vaishak NL and Mr. Ajith from Dept. of Mechanical Engineering had a visit to Lamina Suspensions Products LTD Mangaluru, as a part of Industry connect activity. Faculty had a meeting with Maintenance Manager, Mr. Neeth Sharan. During the meeting, he encouraged student’s participation in industry activity in the form of internship or industry exposure in order to get the feel of operations workflow.

Faculty had an opportunity to interact with production personnel’s as well. The entire production process was carried out using Automation and Robotics starting from heating to material handling.

Lamina Suspension Products Limited is a leaf spring manufacturer based in Mangaluru. With a high degree of automation and extensive technological support, upgraded every year through in-house R&D facilities, they manufacture quality leaf springs that have withstood the toughest of Indian road conditions. Complementing Lamina's product base is its fully automated foundry unit started near Mangaluru in 1983 with a production capacity of 15,000 tpa. It manufactures grey iron and alloy iron casting for industrial applications. They export the product to USA, Brazil, Ecuador, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland, U.K, Spain Holland, Middle East, Singapore, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Africa.

Dr. Molly Chaudhuri invited as Member of CII-KM Core group

Dr. Molly Chaudhuri has been invited as the member of the CII-KM core group for their forthcoming summit in March 2019.
The CII Knowledge Management Summit is organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry annually. The summit provides an opportunity to look into how organizations are rediscovering KM strategies for driving growth and innovation. Also with a strong influx of industries across sectors, start-ups and new age entrepreneurs which are at various levels of maturity with their knowledge systems have marked an increased internal and external attention to the KM experience. The space, therefore, is opening up for dynamic perspectives on KM strategies that take into account the complexities of these businesses. With Block chain, Automation, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Digital transformation, newer technologies all reaching scale and being absorbed into the enterprise at the same time, organizations are getting transformed rapidly.

Over 150 delegates attended the Summit with representation across industry sectors including IT/ITES, Consultants, FMCG, Pharma, Automobile and Manufacturing, and other sectors.

Student Counsellor receives Senior First Aid Responder Certification from the famous UK based First Aid Charity Organization, St John’s Ambulance.

Mr Ankith S. Kumar, Student Counsellor has received his Senior Certification in First Aid Training by the world renowned UK based First Aid charity organization called St John Ambulance. He has cleared his senior examination conducted by St John Ambulance India division and received SFA certification.

St. John Ambulance India is the Indian branch of St. John Ambulance an international organization involved in teaching and practice of medical first aid and the provision of ambulance services. It has its national headquarters in Delhi and operates as a federation. There are two operational wings often called the Association Wing (which delivers first aid training) and the Brigade Wing (which delivers First Aid at public events).

St John Ambulance is the name of a number of affiliated organizations in different countries, which teach and provide first aid and emergency medicine and are primarily staffed by volunteers.

Obituary

• It is with profound grief we inform you of the sad demise of Shri Ira Baavabedu Patela Shankara Alva, Founding Governing Council Member of Bhandary Foundation. He is the Father of our Secretary, Mrs. Prasanna Bhandary and Father-in-law of our Chairman Mr. Manjunath Bhandary. Shri Shankara Alva was also the President of Shree Somanatheshwara Temple Seva Committee and Managing Trustee of Ira Baavabedu Kuriyaadithai Muvaru Daivangal Kshetra. Sahyadri family deeply mourns the demise of its beloved member and pray for the resting of the departed soul in eternal peace.


• Sahyadri family deeply mourns the sad demise of Mr. Abdul Rashid Al Muhsin, student of third semester from the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering. We pray that God Almighty give courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss with fortitude.
