Padmashri Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao Inaugurates Sahyadri Center for Social Innovation

The Sahyadri Center for Social innovation which includes Hands on experience lab, Engineering sense lab, Innovation lab and Product design lab was inaugurated by Padmashri Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao Former Vice Chancellor of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Former Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory. He unveiled the Hands on Lab Manual and addressed the gathering at the Sahyadri Seminar hall.

Padmashri Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate from University College of Engineering, Bangalore University. Subsequently he got his Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering Department from IISc., Bangalore, with specialization in Rockets and Missile Systems and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad. He is a fellow member of several Indian institutions and professional bodies and has also configured and established many world class high-tech facilities and infrastructure. As Project Director for the mobile surface to air area defense missile system, AKASH, he has provided the technological and managerial leadership for about 1000 scientists/engineers working at various development centres over 20 years in the country.

Principal Dr. U.M .Bhushi welcomed the gathering. He spoke about Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, a great scientist who ignited the young minds, and also added that Sahyadri is honored by the presence of Dr. Prahlada Rao.

Chairman Mr.Manjunath Bhandary expressed his vision in initiating this Center for Social Innovation. He spoke about the importance of social innovation which helps to build a better society. He said that almost 90 % of engineers fail to use their basic knowledge and added that a good engineer will always be the one who applies his knowledge towards societal problems.

Prof. C Ranganathaiah, Director of Research introduced the Chief guest and stated that engineers will come up with innovations which are technology driven by providing products, services and models which contribute to the development of the society.

Chief Guest Padmashri Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao interacted with the students and faculty members by sharing some of his experiences in serving the nation. He further stated that, the students should utilize the model of learning where in teachers will do less of teaching and students learn more. He also emphasized that institutes should provide the environment and space for innovation where students being dynamic, highly networked, ambitious and comfortable in adopting new technologies can make wonders happen if opportunities are provided to them. He illustrated about Skunkworks, where projects are being developed by a group of people who research and develop a project primarily for the sake of radical innovation. He advised students to realize their potential and break barriers in order to innovate and explore. He spoke about developed countries like Germany, Japan and USA which provide more leverage for innovative thinking. He also shared his memorable moments with Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. He concluded by saying that solutions can be provided to problems through innovative products, services and processes. Finally he expressed that this day would be considered as Learner’s Day. He assured Sahyadrians of his continuous support in the area of innovation.


Brahmachari Aathmaroopa Chaithanya Pays Visit to the Campus

The system of education is churning out scores of people brilliant in their respective fields but unsuccessful in building happy fulfilling lives. Inorder to orient the youth Ramakrishna Math, Mangalore, is organising ‘Shraddha- a Symposium on Education for Life Management’, to discuss various aspects of Life management for the students on the 9th of September 2015.

‘Prajna- A Symposium for the college faculty will be organised on the 11th of September 2015, providing an apt platform to discuss and reflect on the Ancientm Contemporary and New- Gen Education Systems.

Brahmachari Aathmaroopa Chaithanya visits Sahyadri to brief on the events and invited the faculty and the students.


Dr. Ganesh Kannarpady from the University of Arkansas Visits Sahyadri

Dr. Ganesh Kannarpady from the Nano-Centre, University of Arkansas, Little Rock, visited the campus and shared his research experience with the core research group. He interacted with the researchers and stated that there are three main areas in which the current research is going on in the University of Arkansas:

a) Introduction of super-hydrophobicity for de-icing of aircrafts.
b) Solar electrochemical cells for generation of hydrogen as fuel for fuel cells.
c) Development of micro/nano channels on surfaces for the early detection of cancer using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
He proposed that he would be happy to collaborate with Sahyadri researchers in the future. He also appreciated the beauty of the Campus and its ambience.

Dr. Ganesh Kannarpady, an alumnus of Mangalore University, obtained his Ph.D. from Mangalore University in 2002 under Prof. Jayagopal Uchil. After his Ph.D. he was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. At present he is working at the newly formed Nano-Centre, University of Arkansas, Little Rock.


The Director of Pai International Electronics Limited visits the campus

Mr. Ajith Pai, promoter and whole time Director of Pai International Electronics Limited visited the campus. He had hands on experience of our labs and appreciated the college and its infrastructure. He also visited the electronic laboratories and offered to provide the electronic items required for the electronics lab.

Pool Campus by Maiyas Beverages & Foods Private Limited for MBA Sales Trainee

Pool Campus by Maiyas Beverages & Foods Private Limited for MBA Sales Trainee was held in the campus. The 2015 pass-outs had an opportunity to apply for the 10 open positions. Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal interview was conducted. Two of our students have been shortlisted and the final results will be announced soon.

During the pre-placement talk, Mr. P. G Manjunatha, Vice President, HR gave detailed information of their organization and emphasized on the implementation of Nano technology in food processing. Students were enlightened on the various modern technology introduced in their manufacturing unit that removes excessive oil from their food products and Spiral Freezing technique being executed to enhance the life of a food product.

They also conducted sessions on Return on Investment & HR Accounting for the HR and Finance specialization students & also on FMCG – Food product Sales & Distribution for the Marketing specialization students of MBA department.


Dr. Tenzin Pasang Honoured the Syikong award, 2015

Dr. Tenzin Pasang, Assistant professor of Physics, Sahyadri College of Engineering and management is one of the two recipients of the Syikong award for 2015 by the Central Tibetan Administration. He received this award for the recognition for his PhD thesis in physics, entitled ‘Synthesis and Characterization of molecular imprinted polymer using positron lifetime spectroscopy’. He has been awarded with a certificate and a cash prize of 20,000 rupees.

The award was given on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Tibetan Democracy Day at at Tsuklakhang, Main Temple, Dharamsala, Himachal Pardesh. The occasion was graced by Mrs. Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister for Women & Child Development and Mr. Shanta Kumar, former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and Union minister in the central Government of India among the other members of the Parliament. Dr. Lobsang Sangye, Sikyong of the Central Tibetan Administration introduced this award in the year 2012 and Dr. Tenzin Pasang is the sixth person to receive the same.


Prof. C. Ranganathaiah delivers a Technical talk

Prof. C. Ranganathaiah, Director of Research, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management delivered a talk on “Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy: A novel tool for Materials Characterization” to the Post-Graduate Students at the Regional Institute of Education, Mysore. The talk consisted of a brief over-view of the positron annihilation process starting from the prediction and discovery of the first antiparticle namely the Positron. The description of the three conventional methods which are the off shots of the process followed with an example to demonstrate the potential uses of these methods. The talk was completed by updating the students on the advancement made on the conventional methods. He gave one such advancement example that is the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) a medical diagnostic tool popularly used as an alternative to MRI diagnostic method.

This followed a series of questions by the students who showed a lot of interest in such a sophisticated technology and its use in materials Science. Prof. Ranganathaiah gave them convincing answers to all of their questions.

MBA Faculty Members Invited to Deliver a Guest Lecture


Mr. Lokesh, Assistant Professor, S.G, and Mr. Abhaya Kumar, Assistant Professor Department of Business Administration, delivered a guest lecture on the topic "Personality Development" for the U.G students of Besant College, Mangaluru.

Sahyadri Ranked Sixth

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has been ranked 6th out of 37 colleges in the VTU level Rest-of-Bangalore Zone Chess Tournament held at SJMIT,Chitradurga.

Exposure Visit to Mphasis, Mangaluru

Students specializing in HR from the department of Business Administration visited Mphasis, an HP Company, Mangaluru on an exposure visit. The company has recently been declared as a Tier 1 company. Mr. Joy Devasia, AVP & Lead Business Processing Delivery (Location Leader) and Mr. Vidyaranya Kollipal, Head HR addressed the students on the innovative HR practices in their organization. The Mphsasis management team was delighted to see a greater strength of female students who would want to pursue their career in a leadership role and was fascinated with the information they had about Mphasis through their research before the visit. Mr. Joy Devasia emphasized that Digital Strategy is the need of the hour and all approaches/decisions should be driven through Digital Strategy. Students questioned aspects related to Employee Engagement, CSR Activities and Challenges in Recruitment & Selection which was clarified by them using real time scenarios of their organization. This visit has not only assisted the students to stay updated with the HR practices in the corporate organizations but has also enhanced their opportunities in the HR domain. Ms. Sushma V and Ms. Gayathri U Shetty, Asst. Professors, Department of Business Administration accompanied the students on the visit.

Deeksha Bhandari Receives Best Outgoing Student Award

Ms. Deeksha Bhandari has been awarded the Best Outgoing Student award from Mount Carmel College. She was honored to receive this award from Mr. Chakravarthi Mohan, IAS, and Commissioner, Department of Collegiate Education. She completed her graduation with distinction and holds an offer from the prestigious London School of Economics to pursue her masters.

Online Excel Training Course by the Department of Business Administration

Department of Business Administration has launched an online excel training course, a skill building program, for the MBA students. On completion of the course the students receive certificates from Knowledge Varsity.
