Bridgestone India Pvt. Ltd Campus Recruitment Drive

Bridgestone India Pv. Ltd. conducted a campus recruitment drive for the 2015 passed out Mechanical Engineering students for the role of Graduate Engineer Trainee offering a package of Rs.6 lakhs/annum. The results are awaited.

Sahyadri Runners-up in Table Tennis Tournament

The Sahyadri Boys’ and Girls’ Table Tennis team are the runners-up in the VTU Mangalore Zone Table Tennis Tournament held at SDIT, Bajpe. Sameeh Mohammed (Captain), Krishna Sindhur M., Ashwith Immanuel, Shreyank S Perla , Aadil Hussain , Harikrishnan, and Aster Fernandes played for the boys team and Chaithra Kamath G. (Captain), Archana George, Primal Lobo, and Alphonsa Lincy played for the girls team.

Dr. Shashidhara Marathe, Diamond Light Source UK at Sahyadri

Dr. Shashidhara Marathe, Diamond Light Source, UK ,visited the campus and shared his research experience with the Principal, Director-CENT and with the members of the core research team and discussed his research work on coherent X-Ray diffraction with phase contrast imaging. He conveyed that he would be happy to collaborate with the Sahyadri researchers in the future. He greatly appreciated the beauty of the Campus.

Dr. Shashidhara Marathe, an alumnus of Mangalore University, obtained his M.Sc. from Mangalore University in 2001, Ph.D from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Korea. At present he is working at the Diamond Light Source, which is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.

Sahyadri Research Team Visits Mangalore University for Research Collaboration

Prof. Dr. Richard Pinto, Dr. Niraj Joshi and Dr. Jayarama A. of the Government Research Centre at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management visited Mangalore University and had fruitful discussions with Prof. S.M Dharmaprakash for research collaboration based on pulsed laser deposition for the growth and study of thin films. They discussed the possible work such as alcohol detection and gas detection. Prof. S.M. Dharmaprakash also has a plan of setting up a gas sensing measurement setup. He extended his collaboration to use all other instruments such as AFM, Vacuum coating unit and powder X-ray diffractometer.

Prof. S.M. Dharmaprakash, is an active researcher in the Department of Physics, Mangalore University. He has published more than 300 journal papers. His area of expertise is device physics, thin films, crystallography and nonlinear optics.

The Chairman Invited to Asian Summit on Education & Skills (ASES) 2015

Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary was invited to the Asian Summit on Education & Skills (ASES), 2015, held at Bangalore. He was one of the delegates to the summit and had an opportunity to meet the Education & Skills Ministers from across Asia, the Indian Central and State ministries, Senior Policy Makers, Eminent & Senior Educationists, Owners of Educational Groups and other key stakeholders to share and deliberate on various issues pertaining to the policy & implementation of best practices in the education and training sector.

He also had a round of discussion with Dr. Sharanprakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Government of Karnataka & Dr. Assadullah Hanif Balkhi, Minister of Education, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The Asian Summit on Education & Skills (ASES) brings together influential leaders, eminent educationists and other key stakeholders to create an unparalleled platform for exchange of dialogues on policy, implementation of future practices and new growth drivers that are revolutionizing the education and training sector in India and around the world. VTU Centralized Placement Cell Holds Meet for Placement Officers of Engineering Colleges at Sahyadri

Mr. Geo D'Silva, Director, VTU-Centralized Placement Cell, and Special Officer (VTU Placement), introduced the placement officers to the new portal for placement - VTU Centralized Placement Cell (VTU-CPC), which consists of areas such as Human Resource Conclaves and IT Domains and Academics. He emphasized on the point that all training must be done by certified trainers.

VTU-CPC consists of assessment tests and career direction for final year students. The training programmes will include aptitude training, personality development, business communication in English and technical training.

The portal also includes placement drives, government job links and other placement related news, circulars, announcements, industry internships, mock tests, online practice tests as well as overseas opportunities in 10 to 15 different countries along with the courses offered by their universities. He encouraged the placement officers of the different colleges to get affiliated under the VTU-CPC portal to reap the benefits of centralized training and placement.

Sahyadri Faculty Participate in the Symposium ‘Prajna ‘15

Prajna – A symposium for college faculty on the theme, ‘Reflections on Ancient, Contemporary & New-Gen Education’ was organized by the Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru.

The symposium was organized to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s historic speech delivered by him at the World Parliament of Religions on 11th September 1893, Chicago.

In his keynote address, Swami Jitakamananda, Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru emphasised the wise saying – The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book. He said that in the Gurukula system, the purpose of education was the opening of the heart, sharpening of the intellect and instilling discriminative wisdom into the students that would guide them through the vicissitudes of life. Awakening of Prajna was the goal of education and the art of bread-winning was only a byproduct. But today, he said that, earning has become more important than learning, because of which, several problems are plaguing our society.

The Inaugural address was by His Excellency Sri Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, Honorable Governor of Karnataka. He spoke on the teachings of Swami Vivekananada and reiterated the role of a Guru. He said that a mother is the first teacher and she educates the child with the best of both, knowledge and culture. He emphasized the role of teachers as lamps lighting up several lamps without losing their light. He asked the lady teachers to educate the students with knowledge and sanskruthi as they encompass all the great virtues of love, patience, perseverance and truth which are essential for the building of one’s character.

The resource persons of the symposium were Padmabhushan Dr. B.M. Hegde, Indian medical scientist, educationist, author and former Vice Chancellor of the Manipal University. He spoke on Ancient wisdom & Modern Science. Swami Atmapriyanandaji, Vice Chancellor of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University and Member of the Central Advisory Board of Education, spoke on Changing and Changeless trends in education in the ancient and modern times. Swami Sarvathanandaji, Adhyaksha of Ramakrishna Ashrama, Rajkot discussed on the Pedagogy- Past, Present and future and Prof. K. Raghothama Rao, Director of MANAS Centre for Training & Development, Director of Human Networking Academy and Chairman of Seek Foundation interacted on the Active Learning Strategies.

The guests of Honor were Dr. N. Vinay Hegde, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University and Prof. Dr. K. Byrappa, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University. Two faculty members from Sahyadri college of Engineering & Management participated in the symposium.

Faculty Member Receives Patent Notification for Ph.D. Thesis

The Ph.D. thesis of Mr. Steven Lawrence Fernandes, Assistant Professor, Electronics and Communication Engineering received a patent notification from the Government of India, Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks. The patent notification number 2983/CHE/2015 for the invention titled, “Match Composite Sketches with Drone Images”, published on the 10th of July 2015, relates to the method of comparing composite sketches. The said method utilizes a dynamic image capturing system with an intelligent module for the recognition of face from live images. More specifically, an image quality assessment module is utilized to assess the quality of the captured image. Further, based on the image quality assessment module results, a feature extraction module is utilized to extract the features from the said image which finally is compared with a reference image using a classifier module. The present invention provides a single step easy procedure with a very quick turnaround time for matching composite sketches.

Huawei conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the 2015 passed out students of Computer Science & Engineering, Information Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Master of Computer Applications. The results are awaited.

Civil Engineering Students Visit Ready Mix Concrete Plant

Students of civil engineering visited the Ready Mix Concrete plant in the Baikampady industrial area of Mangaluru as part of their internship program. They interacted with the site engineer Mr. Siddish Kamath and gathered useful information in their specific area of study.

Mr. Anand G Naik Makes a Stopover at Sahyadri on his Entrepreneurial Journey

Mr. Anand G Naik, Managing Director & CEO of BOREDBEES Tech Solutions India (P) Ltd. and a young entrepreneur who has embarked a 10,000 kms entrepreneurial journey visited the Campus. Beginning his journey this month from Chennai, he will drive across 10 states, 25 Cities, addressing 30,000 young and potential entrepreneurs to motivate and take them to the energetic world of entrepreneurship. He strongly believes this initiative would bring a change in the mindset of the aspiring entrepreneurs. He founded his first company at the age of 17 and has received many awards for his work.

He interacted with the Entrepreneurship, Research and Project Student Council co-ordinators and motivated them to become future entrepreneurs. He shared his startup experiences and gave his definition of entrepreneurship – 'convergence of all skills'. Students were greatly inspired by his talk and benefitted from this session.

Call for VGST Projects - Rs 40,000/- Funding

Technology Related Innovative Projects (TRIP), by VGST which offers a grant of Rs. 40,000/- has been announced specifically for the third year engineering and first year Mechanical Engineering and Master of Computer Applications students. VGST will receive proposals up to the 6th of October 2015 and the project should be completed by the 30th of April 2016.

Students interested in taking up SPSS projects may do so at the earliest. The third year students are required to apply to the VGST (TRIP) proposal as it is a time line project which is to be completed before April 2016. The plus point is that before one goes in for placement the project will add immense value showcasing that the candidate has executed a government project. Another added advantage is that the same project could be enclosed as a final year project in the curriculum. Click here for more details.
