Engineer’s Day: Sir M. Visvesvaraya the Engineer Remembered

On the occasion of Engineer’s Day the College paid homage to Sir. M. Visvesvaraya. The Principal, the HODs, the faculty, the staff and the students showered flowers on the statue of Sir M.V. and remembered Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on his 155th birthday.

“Remember, your work may be only to sweep a railway crossing, but it is your duty to keep it so clean that no other crossing in the world is as clean as yours.” – Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

These were the words of the greatest engineer India has ever seen, the engineer whose birthday is celebrated as “Engineers Day” all over India on the 15th of September every year.

Sir M Visvesvaraya was a man who excelled in various fields. He is remembered today as an engineer par excellence, a highly respected statesman and a visionary thinker.

He is known to be the greatest engineer of all times, who with his vision and dedication in the field of engineering made some exceptional contributions to India. Owing to his contribution he was honored with the highest state award of India, the “Bharat Ratna”, in the year 1955.

He was the chief designer of the flood protection system designed and built for the city of Hyderabad, as well as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore which created the largest reservoir in Asia at that time.

Right from the very first day of his service, Sir M.V. demonstrated his flair towards engineering and the building of the nation. Within a decade, he gained reputation as the most able engineer who could be entrusted with the most complex problems. The government even published articles in the leading newspapers praising his dedication and admired his work.

Sir Visvesvaraya was knighted as the Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) by the British for his contributions to society in the year 1915, he was also awarded with the independent India’s greatest honor, the Bharat Ratna in 1955 for his relentless work in the fields of engineering and education. He is also the recipient of several honorary doctoral degrees from eight universities in India.

He dedicated his life towards the building of the nation and he epitomized all the qualities of an ideal engineer throughout his life. Hence, we honour this great luminary by celebrating his birthday as ‘Engineer’s Day’.

A research article titled “Influence of Heat Treatment on Microstructure, Hardness and Wear Behavior of Super Duplex Stainless Steel AISI 2507” authored by Mahesh B. Davanageri, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering has been published in the American Journal of Materials Science, Vol. 5(3C), pp. 48-52.




Aimfill International Campus Recruitment Drive

Aimfill International conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the 2015 graduates of Engineering in the stream of CS, IS ,EC of 2015. The results are awaited.

The job profile will give the students exposure to various facets of corporate work culture like sales, marketing, client presentation, corporate law, franchise development, operations and management of a center etc.

Xchanging Technology Campus Recruitment Drive

Xchanging Technology Services India Pvt. Ltd. conducted a pooled campus recruitment drive for the 2015 graduates of Engineering in the stream of CS, IS, EC, EE and Mechanical Engineering. Eight students have been shortlisted.

Xchanging PLC (LSE: XCH) is a company which provides business processing, technology and procurement services in 42 countries for customers across many industry sectors. The company offers expertise in business processing, with knowledge of insurance and financial services. Xchanging offers IT outsourcing, infrastructure including network managed services, software products and application management. It also sells procurement services. Xchanging has offshore centres in India, Malaysia and Singapore.

Agents of Social Change

A talk on 'Agents of Social Change' as a part of Social Innovation Projects for the first year students was delivered by Mr. Guruduth Shenoy, Project Manager-Content Development, Accenture, Bangalore, Mr. Namdev Shenoy, Associate Director - Treasury & Banking at Mindtree, Bangalore and Mrs. Deepali Shenoy, facilitator, CMCA, Bangalore. They stressed on the importance of co-existing based on concepts like Care, Co-operate and Communicate. They shared examples of a few social innovators who were able to bring about some change in the environment that they lived in and also shared a live example of social innovative work that they have personally carried about in the city of Bangalore through a social awareness campaign named 'Ugly Indian' and through a civic awareness workshop that they conduct for Govt. school children in Bangalore.

Guest Lecture by Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate

Mr. Raghavendra Shettigar, Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate, Ponnampet, Kodagu district, visited Sahyadri and delivered a lecture to the MBA students on ‘Judiciary as a Service’. He emphasized the aspect of Management in the Civil Courts and the aspects of administration in the courts with the appointment of court managers. He further gave a brief description of the concepts of the Indian Judiciary and the Indian Penal Code. The talk gave insights into the proceedings that take place in the Court and thereby linked the concept of Judiciary as a service.

Principal Chief Guest at KIOCL Engineer’s Day Celebration


Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, was the Chief Guest on the eve of Engineer’s Day celebrations at Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL), Panambur Mangalore. The function was presided over by Shri. S. Govindaraja Bhat, Joint General Manager (Production). There were also deliberations on use of renewable energy resources for the KIOCL plant. The company is open to offer internships and industrial visits to students of Sahyadri.

Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd is a Government of India enterprise with its head office in Bangalore. It has iron ore mines in Kudremukh (Chikkamagaluru district) on the Western Ghats and a pelletisation plant in Mangalore. The Kudremukh mine is one of the largest iron ore mines in the world. KIOCL's products are now exported to China, Japan, Iran and Taiwan in the international market besides catering to a number of consumers in the domestic market such as Ispat Industries, Vikram Ispat and Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited. Deeksha Bhandari en route to the London School of Economics

Ms. Deeksha Bhandari is en route to London, U.K., to pursue her postgraduate studies at the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE).

Dean Academics Invited as Resource Person

Prof. B. S Umashankar, Professor and Dean Academics was invited to deliver a lecture on “Latest Technologies which are Driving the Web”, at the National Seminar on “Emerging Technology in Computer Science & Information Technology” organised at St. Philomena College, Puttur.

Funding for Projects under the Sahyadri Project Support Scheme (SPSS)

The Sahyadri Project Support Scheme (SPSS) funding is now open to all the BE, M.Tech. and MCA students. The funding allotted for the first year B.E. students is Rs.5,000/-, second year B.E. is Rs 10,000/-, third year B.E. is Rs. 25,000/- and the inter-departmental projects (a mixed group of fourth year, third year and second year B.E. students from two or more branches) is Rs.50, 000/-.

The students of B.E. can form a team of 6-7 members, a team of 3-5 members can be formed by the M.Tech/MCA students and 8-10 members from the inter-departments can pool together for the same. Each SPSS project will have two guides - a supervisor and a co-supervisor from the faculty list with their areas of expertise document. The submission of the online project proposal can be done using the link Online project proposal submission. The project proposal should be submitted by the 30th of September 2015.

J Sanjeev Kumar Speaks on Corporate Expectations from Fresh Graduates

J Sanjeev Kumar, Senior HR Manager, TESCO, Bangalore, delivered a guest lecture to the MBA students of Finance, HR and Core Finance on the topic `Corporate Expectations from Fresh Graduates.’ He spoke on the changing work environment in the corporate world and growing expectation from the fresh knowledge workers. He also touched on key skills a candidate must possess while entering into the new world of business.
