Happy Teachers’ Day In commemoration of the Birth Date of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Teachers’ Day was celebrated by honouring Dr. Radhakrishnan. Principal, Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte gave his best wishes to all the teachers during this occasion. The students expressed their gratitude to their teachers on this day.

Ganesh Karnik, Former MLC and Director of Nitte Institution was invited to address the Teaching fraternity on the importance and role of a Good Teacher. Capt. Ganesh Karnik spoke about the glorious cultural and educational heritage of Ancient India. He also expressed his worry about the deteriorating standards in the Indian system today. He called upon all the teachers to take up the responsibility to create a student who is more humane rather than just a machine. Capt. Karnik presented a video of the French Ambassador where he speaks about Indian-ness.

The day began with the inauguration by the Chief Guest Prof. ArunaKamath, Principal, SDM College of Business Management, Mangalore. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director, MBA Department welcomed the guests and participants. She gave a brief highlight about our College to the participants. Mr. Padmanabha B, Coordinator, introduced Prof. Aruna Kamath and Mr Sagar A H,Resource Person, who is an international educationist.

Prof. Kamath pointed out that teachers should learn from the younger generation. She said that doctors save life and teachers shape life. Teachers should always face adversities and come up with better solutions was her message to all the participants. In his presidential remarks, Prof. S. S.Balakrishna, Vice Principal, complimented the MBA Department on the innovative, dynamic and mind boggling events the department always hosts. Prof. Girish Madla, Coordinator thanked all the dignitaries and participants for being a part of the one day FDP Program.

Mr Sagar A H kick-started his session on ”Philosophy and critical thinking” with an ice breaker where he told them that “a genius is confused and asks a lot of questions but a person who is sure and confident will never think differently. He spoke on the famous theories- Chinese Room, Brain in a Vat, A Single Migration from Africa populated the world. During the post lunch session Mr Sagar A H spoke on Universal Human Values & Ethics in education highlighting the Structure of Arguments and Cultural Studies stating that there are two India’s in India.

MBA Department organizes a One-Day Leadership Development Programme for the UG students MBA Department organizes a One-Day Leadership Development Programme for the UG students The theme of the Leadership Development Programme (LDP) was “Discover the Leader in You”. A total of 175 students from 25 colleges participated in the programme. Three sessions were facilitated by the in-house faculty – Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA; Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor and Prof. Mithun Ullal. The key feature of this year’s LDP, was the visit to the in-house start ups/industries to view the work flow and also interact with the Company Heads. Sahyadri has not only awakened the leadership ability through sessions but has also made them exposed to a corporate environment.

Aeromodelling Workshop organized by Team Challengers Aeromodelling Workshop organized by Team Challengers During the Day One, students were explained about the preliminary and conceptual design of Radio controlled plane. Post this; they had an activity to interact with each other creating new bonds of friendship. Next session was on electronic components and their uses. Further, students learned the theoretical design by XFLR software.

During the Day Two, students had structural session in which they built RC plane utilizing the materials provided to them. Mentors of each group explained the reasons behind all the motions through a Real Plane. Further, Air-show was also held. A member from each team presented their plane to the mentors. Workshop concluded after announcement of the winners and distribution of certificates as well as the prizes.

Faculty members complete Java Certification course from Oracle Academy

Prof. Akhila Tejaswi and Prof. Prakhyath Rai, Department of Information & Science Engineering; Prof. Harisha, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, completed a Certification course from Oracle Academy on “Java Fundamentals and Java Programming”.

This course was taught as a part of Faculty Development Programme (FDP) by ORACLE ACADEMY in association with ICT Academy in Sahyadri Campus.

This course was designed by Oracle Academy. During the course, participants were introduced to object-oriented concepts, terminology, and syntax, and the steps required to create basic Java programs using hands-on, engaging activities like programming 3-D animations, develop 2-D games and create Java applications.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty visit Bharatiya Shipyard Company Prof. Suhas and Prof. Vaishak from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering along with Mr. Ajith, CAED Lab Instructor, visited Bharatiya Shipyard Company Mangaluru as a part of Departmental Industry Connect Programme. During their visit, they had an opportunity to interact with the President and Head of the Shipyard - Mr. Pavithran Alokkan and also the Plant General Manager - Mr. Mahesh, regarding the current industry needs in terms of skill sets of engineers. Mr. Pavithran expressed his delight to host an industry visit for the Mechanical Engineering students and also internship opportunities to bridge the gap between industry & institute.

They also insisted faculty to stimulate students to opt for core field for their professional growth.

Mr. Pavithran Alokkan was appreciative of Sahyadri initiatives as he was a part of Sahyadri Conclave and has witnessed the conducive learning environment created for students.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty visit DSAJ Precisions Pvt Ltd, Mangaluru Prof. Suhas and Prof. Vaishak from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering along with Mr. Ajith, CAED Lab Instructor, visited DSAJ Precisions Pvt Ltd, Mangaluru. They interacted with the Director Mr. Jeevan Achar regarding Industry-Institute tie up for industry specific training programmes like exposure to Precision Manufacturing using automated Lathe, Imported Raw Material Inspection, Final Quality control using Metrology devices Design and manufacturing of customised CAM etc.

Faculty shared the best practices of Sahyadri with the Director and invited him to the campus as students would have enormous learning experience while interacting with him.

DSAJ Precision Pvt Ltd is a sister concern of DSAJ LLC which is located in Switzerland. In Mangaluru Plant, they manufacture watch parts which are meant for export purpose only to Switzerland for assembly of Rolex watch with 0-6µm tolerance. The raw materials are imported from the same country. Presently, Mangaluru Plant runs 35 semi automated lathe and 4 CAM manufacturing machines.

Internship recruitment conducted by LMT Software Solutions Pvt Ltd. LMT Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd. visited Sahyadri to conduct an Internship recruitment for the undergraduates. The students had to undergo a technical assessment test for the selection process. The results are awaited.

The internship was viewed by the team leader as an educational opportunity for the students rather than a part time job. The internship included training/orientation and focused primarily on learning and developing new skills and gaining a deeper understanding of concepts through hands on application of the knowledge that students have learnt in class.

Sahyadrians invited as judges at St Aloysius B.Ed College

Mr Naveen Pillar, Coordinator - Arts & Culture; Mr Kishore D J, Assistant Professor - Mechanical Department; Ms Prajwala Preema Rodrigues, Assistant Professor - Department of Business Administration were invited as judges to evaluate EDU TARANG 2017, a two-day B.Ed Inter-Collegiate Cultural Competition at St Aloysius B. Ed College, Mangaluru. Several colleges from Mangalore took part in the programme.

GATE-2019 : Closing Date for Submission of (Online) Application – Friday 21st September 2018

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB) -GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Qualifying in GATE is a mandatory requirement for seeking admission and/or financial assistance to:
(i) Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and
(ii) Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Science, in the institutions supported by the MHRD and other Government agencies.
Even in some colleges and institutions, which admit students without MHRD scholarship/assistantship, the GATE qualification is mandatory. Further, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have been using the GATE scores in their recruitment process.

Scientific Officer, Kudankulam Project - Nuclear Power Corporation visited Caliper Mr Kishore, Scientific Officer, Kudankulam Project - Nuclear Power Corporation, visited Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt Limited, a Sahyadri startupto discuss the ongoing projects ordered on Caliper.He also spent some quality time with the young CAD engineers who have joined recently @ Caliper to complete a design of the nuclear reactor components which will be manufactured by Caliper in the coming weeks.

Mr Kishore was impressed with Sahyadri and its initiatives and invited Caliper to visit their site again to discuss potential re-engineering opportunities, which can be taken up involving students and faculty.

Department of Computer Science &Engineering (CS) organized “Arpan-2K18”

Arpan-2K18 With the intent of helping the needy, every yearvarious events are conducted and the money thus collected is contributed to orphanages and old- age homes.

Accordingly, in April this year Arpan-2K18 was conducted and a total of Rs 50,000/- was collected during the programme. This amount was donated to “Sri Matha Lakshani Shanthidhama” an Old Age Home at Meramajal. Faculty members, along with the students visited the placeand interacted with the elderly people.

Alumni Interacts with the students of Information Science & Engineering  Ashwitha Crasta, alumni of Information Science & Engineering, currently working as Software Quality Assurance Engineer at Dell EMC, Bengaluru, interacted with the students of Information Science & Engineering.

In her address, Ashwitha insisted that the students get placed through the placement drives itself. She also explained about the different levels of interview process. She also enlightened the students about her domain of expertise i.e. Database Storage Applications in virtual machines.

Faculty presents a poem during Independence celebration at Town hall

Internship recruitment conducted by LMT Software Solutions Pvt Ltd. Mrs. Akshaya Shetty, Asst. Professor, Departmentof Kannada, was invited for poem recital at the Independence Day celebration event organized by Kannada Mattu Sanskriti Ellake, Government of Karnataka, at Town Hall, Mangalore City.

The poem entitled“Savaalinolage Svatantrothara” was selected by the Department, for presentation during this prestigious event.

MBA Faculty invited for a Guest Talk at St. Agnes College, Mangaluru

Prof. Prajwala Preema Rodrigues, Department of Business Administration, was invited as the resource person to St. Agnes College, Mangaluru. She had an interactive session with 150 final year students of BBM Department. She spoke on - “If you can dream it, you can achieve it”. She urged the students to have a purpose or a goal in life which will drive them towards achieving it. Further, she said that life without a purpose is meaningless. One should seek to find the purpose for oneself and strive towards achieving it.

Student Counsellor completes CPR and Emergency First Aid Certification conducted by Indian Red Cross Society

Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor has undergone training in responding to victims of natural disaster, accidents, sports injuries and other worst case life threatening scenarios. With this certification, Mr. Ankith has become an authorized first responder and first aid provider. He has received training from Dr. Ramachandra Bhat, B.Sc., M.B.B.S., DIH, DHA, F.W.C.D., P.G. Diploma in Psychological Counselling, Authorized First Aid Trainer for Indian Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance. Campus Recruitment Drive

ShipX & Vembu Technologies  ShipX & Vembu Technologies conducted a pool campus recruitment drive at Sahyadri for the 2018 passed out engineering students. A total of 29 students attended the drive from D.K and Udupi districts.

Accolite Software India Accolite Software India conducted an exclusive campus recruitment drive for the B.E, B.Tech engineering students of 2019 batch. A total of 252 students attended the drive and the results are awaited. The package offered is 13 lakhs per annum.

Achievements of a First Year Engineering Student

Ms. Ananya P J has participated in District Level Badminton Competition held recently at Uppala. She has also received First Place in Shuttle Badminton (Singles) which was held at Kasaragod. Sahyadri is proud of her achievements and wishes her the best in future.

Paper presented by Sahyadri faculty is accepted atINTERSPEECH-2018  A paper entitled "Robust Acoustic Event Classification using Bag-of-Visual-Words" presented by Prof. Manjunath Mulimani, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering (CS) is accepted at the INTERSPEECH-2018 held at Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Hyderabad. The co-author of the paper is Dr. Shasidhar G. Koolagudi, Associate Professor, Dept. of CSE, NITK, Surathkal.

INTERSPEECH is the world’s largest and most comprehensive tier-1 international conference on speech, language and audio signal processing. In India, the conference is organised for the first time by International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) National Qualifier Test

TCS conducted a National Qualifier Test to recruit engineering students of 2019 Batch. Fifty Five students were shortlisted for the first round and Sahyadri is leading in the Mangaluru region. Furthur rounds would be held at Bengaluru.
