Installation of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club Installation of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club Toastmaster being a prime dais for enhancing leadership and communication skills was inaugurated and installed as a club in the campus. Mr. Prashanth Rao, Technical Manager of Mathworks was the Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony. Vice-Principal, Prof. S S Balakrishna; TM Malini Hebbal, Educomp Director; TM Savitha Salian, Area Director and fellow toastmasters were also present during the event. The club was installed with chartered members taking their oath and receiving of the Charter Banner. President of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club, Mr. Samarth Shenoy welcomed the gathering.

"Everyone loves butterflies flying, Toastmasters is a place where you let those butterflies in your stomach fly away" - this quote by TM Bryan Fernandez beautifully captured what this club is all about.

SPACE - Civil Engineering Students Association inaugurated SPACE - Civil Engineering Students Association inaugurated Sahyadri Pupils Association of Civil Engineers – SPACE, was inaugurated by the Chief Guest - Er. Ujwal Dsouza, Director, O&A, Marian Projects, Mangaluru. In his address, he highlighted the importance of setting priorities and inculcating discipline in life. He also spoke about how important the role of a mentor is in one's overall development. Students of 7th semester who worked in his organization as a part of their internship programme were felicitated by him. Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, Vice-Principal presided over the function. The formal function was followed by cultural extravaganza were students of Civil Engineering showcased their talent.

CLOUDS Inauguration CLOUDS Inauguration Ms. Shimna M, Senior System Engineer, Infosys Mangaluru inaugurated the activities of the CLOUDs (Computer Legends Of Unified Department @ Sahyadri) for the academic year 2018-19. Head of Computer Science & Engineering - Dr. J V Gorabal, welcomed the students of second year into the department and delivered the inaugural address. Ms. Shimna quoted an inspiring story of karoly takacs and said - to achieve anything worthy in life one needs attitude and will. She gave an important message to the students that “We need to work towards our goal with complete determination to succeed’’.

Prof. Sudheer Shetty, Dean-Examination addressed the students and stimulated them to maintain consistency in their academic performance.

The academic toppers were felicitated by the Chief Guest. The CLOUDS team comprising of Ms. Pooja N S, Staff Coordinator; Mr. Krithesh Bhandary, Vice President and Ms. Souravi, General Secretary, were present on this occasion. The inaugural ceremony was then followed by Cultural activities by students of the department.

Two-Day Placement Workshop for Final Year MBA students Two-Day Placement Workshop for Final Year MBA students A Two-Day Placement Workshop was facilitated by Trainers from ‘Practical Trainers’, Bengaluru for the final year MBA students. ‘Practical Trainers’ is a leading training provider in Bengaluru with experience of training more than 10,000 students across various campuses. 176 students were part of this training programme.

The training team comprised of Mr. Amit Gupta, Engineering from IIT Chennai and MBA from Delhi School of Economics. He has an overall experience of more than 12 years in Corporate where he leads the Marketing Team for Campus hiring of Wipro. Currently, Amit works for IBM.

Mr. Swaroop Srinivas, an industry practitioner with close to 12 years of experience has spent majority of his career in the consulting companies like PwC. He has done his engineering from NITK Suratkal and has a post-graduation from IIM Bangalore.

Manish Jha is a Sales & Marketing champion who did his MBA from Welingkar Institute of Management. With over 12 years of experience in Insurance, Consulting, Travel & Food-Tech, Manish leads the team at ‘Practical Trainers’.

Day One of the workshop had a session on Resume Building and students were given individual feedback on their resumes. Post this session, students were apprised on frequently asked questions during a face to face interview and how these questions should be addressed in the most pleasing manner.

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized “CATAPULT 1.0”

CATAPULT 1.0 CATAPULT 1.0 On behalf of Engineers Day, Department of Mechanical Engineering organized “Catapult 1.0” in the memory of Sir M Vishweshvaraya. The event was held with the main intent to exhibit the technical talent of Mechanical Engineering students. Around 20 catapult teams were part of the event with around 100 participants. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Pramod Mishra, Deputy General Manager, MRPL, Mangaluru. During the inaugural address, he mentioned about the Role of engineers in building the society, importance of fundamentals of subjects which are much essential for Design, operations and maintenance of various mechanical components. He also stressed on activity-based learning & appreciated that such events provide a platform for students to exhibit their talents. Prof. S S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal presided over the function. Dr. Rajesh, Dean-Academics; Dr. Ravichandra Rangappa, Dean-Industry Connect; Dr. Ravindra Babu, Associate Professor; Mr. Kiran Prakasha, Assistant Professor were present during the event.

UG Students of Vivekananda College Puttur came to Sahyadri for Start-Up visit & Hands-On Training in ComputersUG Students of Vivekananda College Puttur came to Sahyadri for Start-Up visit & Hands-On Training in Computers A total of 95 students from Vivekananda College Puttur came to Sahyadri to visit the in-house Start-Ups and industries in Sahyadri Campus and also get Hands-On Training in MS Excel and Typing. To begin with, Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA addressed the students and gave them a brief background of the nature of start-ups and industries that Sahyadri houses. Later, students were taken round the campus to visit the industries and also clarify their doubts with the industry heads. Post Lunch, Prof. Sushma V, Dept. of Business Administration trained the students on Typing Skill as it is one of the key skills to enhance their employability. She also introduced them to the Typing Tool available online which can further bridge the gap in Typing Skill. Later, Prof. Ramesh KG, Dean-Strategic Planning facilitated a session on MS Excel. The students were accompanied by four of their faculty members who were also a part of the day-long event.

Awareness Programme on Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging and Cyber Crime Laws for the First-Year Engineering Students Awareness Programme on Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging and Cyber Crime Laws for the First-Year Engineering Students Department of Academics and NSS division of Sahyadri College in collaboration with The District Police Department organized a much-needed awareness talk for the First year engineering students on issues like Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging, and Cyber Crime Laws. Mr. K. Rama Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mangalore South Sub-Division and Mr. Bhajantri, Inspector, Mangalore Rural Police Station addressed students about the evils of Substance abuse, Ragging, and Cyber Crime. Emphasizing on substance abuse problem, in his speech, Mr. Rama Rao shared his experiences of the cases he handled relating to drugs and revealed that 90% of the time, the people involved in such cases will be students. He explained the Acts such as NDPA and various Indian Penal Codes applicable for the crimes relating to drug abuse and ragging. He stressed the role of students and teachers in curbing the menace of substance abuse, ragging, and Cyber Crimes. He also explained the various types of substances that are abused and its physical and psychological impact on the students. Talking about the cyber crimes, he explained about CDR (Call Details Records) and how mobile phones can be used to solve the crime and track the culprits. He said that Drugs weakens the society and those involved in it are doing a crime against the society. Mr. Bhajantri spoke about the effects of a substance on an individual’s mind and body. He made the students understand their purpose of attending college and how they must choose to lead their life. Dr. Rajesha, Dean- Academics explained the mechanism put forth by Sahyadri to curb substance abuse, ragging and Cyber Crime. He spoke about the college Anti-ragging committee and squad. He urged the students to report to the committee if any incidence of ragging that may happen to them or their friends. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his presidential remarks, urged the students to unite against the evils of Substance abuse, Anti-Ragging, and Cybercrimes. Mr. Devadas Hegde, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation graced the programme as the Guest of Honour.

Research Article of Dean-Industry Connect, Published in Scopus Indexed Journal

A research paper titled “Effect of thermo-physical properties of cooling mass on hybrid cooling for lithium-ion battery pack using design of experiments” authored by Dr. Ravichandra Rangappa, Assoc. Professor (ME) and Dean-Industry Connect, has been published in the International Journal of Energy and Environmental Engineering with the ISSN: 2008-9163 and E-ISSN: 2251-6832.

This article illustrates the application of design of experiments (DOE) to optimize the control variables involved in thermal management. Control variables used for optimization are mass of phase change material (PCM), thermal conductivity of paraffin copper composite (PCC) and water flow rate (WFL). The outcome of this research will be useful for Li-Ion battery manufacturers, as it provides suggestions to design appropriate cooling systems for the battery pack.

E&C Engineering Faculty has been conferred with the Doctorate Degree at IIIT-A

Faculty has been conferred with the Doctorate Degree at IIIT-A Mr. Anush Bekal, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics & Communications Engineering has been conferred with the doctorate degree at the 13th convocation held at the prestigious Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A). The title of his PhD thesis is "Improved Design of Asynchronous ADC with Reduced Comparator Counts" which was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Manish Goswami, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Electronics & Communication (Microelectronics Division), IIIT-A. This research work was jointly carried out with Prof. Ashok Srivastava, Louisiana State University, USA which has lead to the fabrication of the Integrated Circuit prototype (credits: MOSIS foundry) and has resulted in 6 publications in the standard SCI-journals and IEEE International conferences.

The Sahitya Sammelana was organized by Dakshina Kannada Jilla Kannada Sahitya Parishathu & Mangaluru Taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishathu, at Vidyaratna School, Deralakatte.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty visited Canara Springs, Mangaluru to strengthen Industry-Academia Connect

Mechanical Engineering Faculty visited Canara Springs Prof. Suhas and Prof. Vaishak from the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering along with Mr. Ajith, CAED Lab Instructor, visited Canara Springs Mangaluru as a part of Industry-Institute interaction. The team interacted with Mr. Premnath Kudva, Executive Director, Canara Springs who invited Sahyadri students to visit his industry and also approved internship opportunity. The team had also met Mr. A. J Saleem, Deputy General Manager, Canara Springs who shared his appreciation and recalled the elated moments spent at Sahyadri during his visit to the in-house start-ups and industries.

Faculty Team also interacted with the HR Manager – Mr. Krishna Kumar Rao who briefed about the formalities to be followed when students visit their industry for internships and so on.

Parents interaction programme with the parents of lateral entry students

An interaction for the parents of students who have joined lateral entry system was held in Sahyadri campus. The parents were taken for a visit to the start-up companies established in the campus and also to the departments. Mr. Manujanth Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, spoke to the parents and explained about their role in helping students in their education. He explained about the various student-centric activities and initiatives undertaken at the institution. He spoke about the importance of internship and placement training and urged the parents to extend their support in this regards. Mr. Bhandary shared the challenges that students would face in the current competitive scenario and added that being prepared for it is the only best solution. He explained to the parents about industry connect, research projects, newsletters, e-buzz and other initiatives. Post this, Principal – Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte explained about the rules and regulations that the students have to follow in the college.
