Engineer’s Day observed at Sahyadri

On the occasion of Engineer’s Day, the College paid homage to Sir. M. Visvesvaraya. The Principal, the HODs, the faculty, the staff and the students showered flowers on the statue of Sir. M. Visvesvaraya commemorating him on his birthday.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya was a man who excelled in various fields. He is remembered today as an engineer par excellence, a highly respected statesman and a visionary thinker. He is known to be the greatest engineer of all times, who with his vision and dedication in the field of engineering made some exceptional contributions to India. Owing to his contribution, he was honored with the highest state award of India, the “Bharat Ratna”, in the year 1955. He was the chief designer of the flood protection system designed and built for the city of Hyderabad, as well as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore which created the largest reservoir in Asia at that time.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya was knighted as the Commander of the Order of Indian Empire (KCIE) by the British for his contributions to the society in the year 1915. He is also the recipient of several honorary doctoral degrees from eight universities in India.

He dedicated his life towards the building of the nation and he epitomized all the qualities of an ideal engineer throughout his life. Hence, today we honour this great luminary by celebrating his birthday as ‘Engineer’s Day’. t failure is the stepping stone to success. Unless we perform an action, we never know how close we are towards success.

Teacher’s Day and Fresher’s Day celebrated by Department of Business Administration

“Teaching is touching lives forever”. With the intent to celebrate the spirit of the noblest profession of teaching, students of Department of Business Administration organized Teacher’s Day Celebration with activities being conducted for the Professors and honoured them for their sincere efforts to impart knowledge to the students.

Fresher’s day was also organized for the MBA new entrants welcoming them with a warm heart into the new world of post-graduation. This event was conducted with the intension to collaborate newly admitted students and seniors. The program was marked by several colourful and entertaining activities. It explored the talent of the students in dancing, singing, and skits, as well as exhibiting their personal talents. The ceremony hosted many dazzling performances by both seniors and juniors.

Orientation Programme for parents of sixth batch of new Entrants held in the Campus

Parents Orientation programme for the sixth batch of new entrants to the engineering stream was held in the Campus in two batches. Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary welcomed the parents and provided an overview of Sahyadri and its growth since inception. He addressed parents saying that the college is just a dead infrastructure, to which only the students can bring about a difference and make an impact.

He shared few of his personal views with parents that they need to develop a friendly relationship with their wards and also closely monitor every activity of theirs. He also advised the parents to make their ward self-dependent, and insisted that skill and personality development to be taught from home itself. He added that discipline and attitude of the student plays a vital role in shaping one's career. He provided an option to the parents of availing educational loan, in order to make their ward financially responsible. He gave additional details about the E-buzz, E-mails, E-magazine and Newsletter. He concluded by saying - “Do not educate the children to be rich. Educate them to be happy. So when they grow up, they will know the value of things, not the price”.

Principal, Dr. U. M. Bhushi, delivered the concluding remarks at the end of the program, by narrating live examples in connection to the students’ attitude. He placed the placement statistics and explained the code of conduct that every student has to follow in the campus.

Civil Engineering Students' Association - SPACE Inaugurated

Sahyadri Pupils Association of Civil Engineers (SPACE) for the academic year 2016-17 was inaugurated at Nethravathi Auditorium. Mr. Nagesh Puttaswamy, Regional Head (Technical), Ultratech Cement Ltd, Karnataka South, Bangalore, was invited as the chief guest. Mr. Puttaswamy, in his key note address, expressed his appreciation to the growth of Sahyadri and the department of civil engineering over the past few years. He conveyed his best wishes to the second year students for their new phase of engineering life. Dr. Premanada Shenoy, the guest of honor, in his address said that students in the present world should work harder to increase their competency in the current civil engineering industries. He also emphasized on the fact that civil engineers should think beyond the commonsense of a common man and emerge successful in their endeavors. Dr U. M. Bhushi, Principal, presided over the function and in his presidential address, he congratulated the department for the activities conducted during the last academic year. Prof. Purushothama C.T, HOD (UG), welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. Mr. Manohar K, Assistant Professor & SPACE coordinator, presented the SPACE report. Prof. Umesh S.S, HOD (PG), Prof. Umashankar B.S., Dean Academics, and Prof. S. S. Balakrishna, Vice Principal, were present during the inaugural function. Mr. Nirmith A Bangera, student President, SPACE proposed the vote of thanks.

Technical talks delivered to Civil Engineering students

Mr. Ujwal D'souza, Director - O & A, Marian Projects, Mangalore delivered a technical talk on 'Career Opportunities in Civil Engineering,' to second year and pre final year civil engineering students. He gave a gist about various fields which a Civil Engineer can opt as his career.

Mr. Nagesh Puttaswamy, Regional head (Technical), Ultratech Cement, Karnataka South, delivered a technical talk on 'M Sand as an alternative for River Sand,' to the final year civil engineering students.

Faculty members felicitated

Dr. Premananda Shenoy, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering was felicitated on the occasion of SPACE inaugural ceremony by the Civil Engineering Department for having completed his Ph.D recently. Also, Ms. Sthuthi K A, of semester V from the department of civil engineering was felicitated for securing 2nd rank in VTU exams held during the month of June 2016. Mr. Nagesh Puttaswamy, Regional Head (Technical), Ultratech Cement Ltd, Karnataka South, Bangalore was part of the ceremony.

Sahyadri MBA New Entrants share expectations with the Management & Faculty Team

On the last day of the Induction Programme for the MBA New Entrants, the Management and the faculty team of Department of Business Administration conducted a group activity wherein the students were given an opportunity to discuss and note down their expectations. The group presented the key aspects of why they chose Sahyadri for their MBA, their expectations from Sahyadri MBA and also shared further doubts on matters relating to the curriculum.

This was a productive session wherein the Faculty team including the Principal penned down the key aspects presented by the students, gave answers to various doubts they had in mind, understood the expectations from the students as they would be spending the next two crucial years of their life at Sahyadri and chalked out a Roadmap on the actions to be taken in response to the expectations and needs of the students. It was encouraging to note that they were focussed on their personal development and longed to see a transformational change in them by the end of their MBA course. They were keen on being placed in an esteemed organization and appreciated the support of the faculty team. Students were informed of the Value added courses apart from the VTU Curriculum that are already introduced in the daily schedule which not only develop their knowledge & skills but also provides a forum which enhances their ability to exhibit what they learnt and practiced during the course. These include Aptitude Class, MS-Office Training, Communication Enhancement Sessions, SPSS Software Class, Soft Skills & Leadership Development Sessions, E-Learning Portal, Industry Exposure Visits, and Industry Interaction in the Campus.

Students were stimulated to go extra mile in being the best among themselves and also make Sahyadri MBA on par with the premier institutes. Students were also invited to join hands in making Sahyadri MBA one among the best B-Schools. This activity opened doors for students to invest time and effort in building case studies of the situations in and around Sahyadri and contribute towards the growth and improvement collaboratively.

Workshop organized by DTLabz

DTLabz organized a one day workshop on Internet of Things at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology, Udupi. A total of one hundred and ten students participated in the workshop and were excited to work on the trending technology. Mr. Johnson Tellis, Mr. Shrajan Bhandary and Mr. Mayank Chetan of DTlabz facilitated the training session.

Staff Member secures Second place in Inter-State Body Building Championship

Mr. Jagadish Poojary, Department of Mathematics and Trainer at Sahyadri Multi Gymnasium secured second place in the ‘12th Shree Ganesh 2016 ’ –Inter-State (Karnataka - Goa) level for senior and physically challenged body building championship held at Kalamandir, Belagavi organized by Sanjay Sunkar Sports Foundation , Belagavi. He has been selected for Mr. India, National level body building competition which will be scheduled soon.

First Rank in VTU M.Tech CAD Structures

Ms. Sasha Rai P, M.Tech CAD Structures (YR 2014 – 16 Batch) secured First Rank in VTU in CAD Structures. Her aggregate is 87.08%. She has done her project work under the guidance of Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri Educational Institutions. Director, Principal, HOD and Staff-Department of Civil Engineering congratulates and wishes her ALL THE BEST in her future endeavours.

Sahyadrian recruited by Larsen & Toubro Limited

Larsen & Toubro Limited conducted the pooled campus recruitment drive for engineering students of 2016 batch at the campus. 119 students from the pool colleges were part of the recruitment process. Ms. Vidyashree from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering has been recruited by the company.

Fidelis Pooled Campus Recruitment Drive

Fidelis Corporate Solutions Pvt. Ltd conducted the pooled campus recruitment drive for engineering students of 2016 batch at the campus. Thirty students from the pool colleges were part of the recruitment process, out of which one has been shortlisted by the company.

Sahyadri MBA exposure visit to Mphasis Ltd, Mangaluru

Students specializing in HR from the Department of Business Administration visited Mphasis Ltd, Mangaluru. The visit was well-planned with representatives from various functions in HR, addressing the students on matters relating to Recruitment, Training & Development, Line HR and Strategic HR Management. It was a great opportunity to interact with Mr. Joy Devasia, VP & Site Head, Mr. Ben Serrao, HR Business Partner, Ms. Lipitha Kitta, HR Recruiter and Mr. Anoop Kumar Pillai, Lead - Training & Development. The session was interactive with doubts being clarified by the HR professionals on various spheres of HR domain.

On queries relating to how an instance of unethical practices is handled, they highlighted the 3 severity levels of unethical offence and how each level is handled separately. Students were walked through the Recruitment & Selection Practices carried out with importance on the best mode of Recruitment according to the organisation. Various discussions were held on the Strategies of Training and a range of Training Programmes designed for the employees and the new entrants. Employee Engagement activities were touched upon which is an effective tool for employee retention.

Initiatives under Corporate Social Responsibility were also shared with the students so that they can get ideas to be incorporated in the future. Practical answers to queries on the recent changes in the Maternity Benefits Act of 1961 were ascertained which has clarified how a theory is put into practice in an organization to ensure its smooth functioning.

This visit has not only assisted the students to stay up-to-date with the HR practices in the corporate organizations, but has also enhanced their opportunities in the HR domain. Thirty four MBA – HR students were accompanied with Professors Ms. Sushma V and Ms. Prajwala Rodrigues.

Project Exhibition at Infant Jesus Joyland School in association with DTlabz

The students of Infant Jesus Joyland School, Bolar as part of their Design Thinking Class of 10 hours, in association with Sahyadri Edu Dreamers R&D Pvt. Ltd conducted a project exhibition. Mr. Johnson Tellis, Director, DTlabz was invited as the chief guest for the event. Mr. Gautham Nayak, Technical Trainer and Ms. Shreya M, Admin, from the DTlabz were also part of the organizing committee of the project exhibition. Nine teams exhibited their models and the same was presented before the PTA members and students.

10 hours of Design Thinking course included several topics like, idea to prototype, social innovation, basic electronics and circuit making.

Sahyadrians in the VTU Rest-of-Bangalore Zone Chess Tournament

Sahyadri has been ranked third in the boys section and fourth in the girls section in the VTU rest of Bangalore zone chess tournament held at SJMIT, Chithradurga.

Mohammed Shandar, Sanath, Hemanth Kumar, Akhilesh Rai, Chawan Gowda and Ahmed Shameem were the team players in the boys section, while, Smitha B, Sharanya D K, Prajna Shetty, Tanuvi and Sreelakshmi C were from the girls section.
