Inauguration of Sahyadri Student Council by Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka

Sahyadri Student Council was inaugurated with great pomp and pride in the presence of Chief Guest Shri. Basavaraj Rayareddi, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka, Guests of Honour Shri. B. A Mohiuddin Bava, Member of Legislative Assembly, Mangaluru City North, Shri. Aditya Gupta, CEO, India Didactics Association and Dr. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University. Sahyadri Student Council is initiated by the students and for the students. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, welcomed the gathering and highlighted how Sahyadri stands out in providing opportunities to students to enhance their employment. He also mentioned that Sahyadri gives encouragement and nurtures Leadership and the Chief Guest for the day is the role model for leadership. Dr. Umesh M Bhushi urged the student council to be empathetic, modest and be grounded in leadership positions.

Prof. S S. Balakrishna, Vice-Principal invited the student council members onto the dais. These were honoured by the Chief Guest. The Student Council was inaugurated by lighting the lamp and Mr. Nagaraj, Council Member of MBA, administered the Oath.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation in his Presidential Remarks mentioned that Sahyadri focuses on developing leadership quality among students together with academics. He highlighted that student’s walk-in to Sahyadri with an IDEA, get an exposure to identify social problems with the help of faculty team, Develop the concept, Convert them as a project and finally walk out of Sahyadri with a Product. He re-iterated the Vision of Sahyadri that it makes students not Job seekers but Job Creators. He shared an anecdote to prove that Sahyadri is unique and that it has not only grown in Quantity since its inception but also in Quality. He invited each and every individual to be a stake holder of Sahyadri by contributing their time to this institution. He concluded his speech by stimulating the student council to Live like a Leader at Sahyadri and carry it throughout the life.

Shri. Aditya Gupta mentioned that the role of a teacher is now changing to be a guide and hence the students should lead themselves. He appreciated the positive vibe he gets when he visits Sahyadri. He also emphasized that entrepreneurs are not born but created, hence he wished students to be successful entrepreneurs and contribute to the society.

Shri. Mohiuddin Bava appreciated the Quality of education provided in India that has developed the nation and also congratulated Mr. Manjunath Bhandary for leading such a Quality Institution in Karnataka. He also appreciated the achievements of Sahyadri and its contribution to Research.

Shri. Basavaraj Rayareddi emphasized that with the advancement in technology it is imperative to have an Engineering and MBA college like Sahyadri. Our Engineers are moving abroad in search of jobs and the Government is not alone responsible for providing employment opportunities but each student should join hands for employment. Shri. Basavaraj Rayareddi awakened the gathering by quoting how China is moving rapidly on GDP, hence Engineers and MBAs should contribute to India’s GDP as well.

Hack-A-Dream-2016 organized by DTLabz

After 12 hours of blood, sweat and tears, Hack-A-Dream-2016, a hardware hackathon organized by DTLabz came to an end on 18th September, 2016. Total of 76 students participated in the event. The valedictory ceremony was held in the Sahyadri Campus. Mr. Abdul Kareem, Vice-Principal & Dean Research, Bearys Institute of Technology and Mr. Prajwal, Managing Director & Founder of Mangalore Robautonics Pvt. Ltd were the panellists of the event. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, Mr. S. S Balakrishna, Vice-Principal, Dr. Umashankar, Dean Academics and Faculty members were present during the occasion.

The winners were:
I Prize: Team Marvels: Vasu, Shreya B, Ramkishore, Kishan and Harshith.
II Prize: Panthers: Subramanya, Akarsh, Krishna, Sunil and Joel D'souza

One Day Workshop conducted by Flicker Infotech, a Start-Up of Sahyadri

Flicker Infotech has conducted a workshop on web development using HTML, CSS and PHP for the students of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management as well as Canara College at Sahyadri Campus.

Flicker Infotech, the student Start-Up of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, is a Software company involved in Web Designing and Development of Mobile Application. The trainer of the workshop was from a Software Industry with four years of work experience. This workshop was appreciated by the participants for the immense learning outcome.

Industry Visit by First Year MBA Students

As a part of Industry-Academia interaction, students of first year and two faculty members of Department of Business Administration visited ‘Friends Plywood Industries’, Baikampady. Mr. Pavananjay N, General Manager of Friends Plywood Industries briefed the students regarding the various functions, processes and policies of the company. Students visited four units of the firm and had an opportunity to practically view the entire process and the final product produced by the manufacturing unit. Students enthusiastically asked several queries relating to Production, Finance, Marketing and HR functions to the workers on the job. All queries were answered and Mr. Pavananjay N enlightened the students on the realities of plywood industry.

First year MBA students visited two manufacturing units namely Coastal Chip Boards & Lams Pvt Ltd and M. A. Board Products Pvt Ltd situated in Baikampady Area. Coastal Chip Boards & Lams Pvt Ltd manufactures allied wood which include a wide range of products like plywood, lamin board, particle board, fibre board, panels and other boards. At Coastal chip, students interacted with Site Supervisors and the Manager. Post which the students visited M. A. Board Products Pvt Ltd which is a sister concern of Coastal Chips. It manufactures flush doors, moulded doors, veneer doors, densified film faced plywood’s and so on. Students interacted with Mr. Sebin, Manager of the Company. He is a Production Site In-Charge and supervises the Marketing and HR related functions. Students had a premises tour of the manufacturing unit and interviewed several workers to sought answers to their queries.

The officials of Deccan Plasts and Coastal Chip Boards briefed the students regarding the various functions, processes and policies of the company. Students had an opportunity to practically view the entire process and the final product produced by the manufacturing unit. Students asked several queries relating to Production, Finance, Marketing and HR functions to the workers on the job. There was good interaction by the students with the officials of both the corporate units.

Guest Lecture for MBA on “Stock Market Investment in India”

Mr. Sunil Kumar Bedi, Partner, Edelweiss Financial Consulting Firm, Mangalore took a session on “Stock Market Investment in India” for second year MBA finance students. In his talk, he shared few useful tips on how to invest in stock markets. He asked the students to be prudent investors and advised them to device their theoretical knowledge and analyse the stock performance before investing in order to earn profit in market. During his session he showed LIVE trading in stock market and explained various concepts related to it. He motivated them to engage themselves in share market regularly and keenly observe the market for right investment decisions.

Industry Expert interacts with MBA-HR students

Ms. Karishma Suvarna, Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist at VoiceGlance, MResult, Mangalore addressed the Sahyadri MBA students on Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO), An external source of recruitment and also the Step-by-Step Workflow of Talent Acquisition (Procuring the Job requirements from the clients till closing the open position).

She enlightened the students on Active Candidates & Passive Candidates in terms of sourcing the profiles for any open position through Social Networking sites, Job Portals and also LinkedIn. She also highlighted how a Job Description is designed, posted on Job Portals, Screening is done on these portals with key words, sourcing of candidates for further round of telephonic interview and then putting forward the selected candidates to the clients for final selection.

She urged the students to prepare a checklist prior to engaging in the task of sourcing the candidates. It was an interactive session with various queries related to Sourcing Process being answered by the speaker based on the real life scenario. Students were also persuaded to take up Talent Acquisition jobs if such opportunities are available as they provide greater scope for growth in career. This session gave a chance to the MBA-HR students to learn the practical applicability of HR theory and concepts.

With six years of total work experience, Karishma worked with Mphasis Ltd as a Project Trainer, Soft Skills Trainer and also Quality Analyst prior to MResult.

FLAMES - Student Association Inaugurated

FLAMES (Fulfilling Aspirations of Mechanical Engineering Students), student association of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for the academic year 2016 - 17 was inaugurated by Mr. Chidanand Kubihalmath, CEO & MD, Samruddhi Group of Companies. He gave a presentation to regarding Importance of communication for career growth, Capabilities for self growth, Opportunities in industries, Industrial requirements to recruit fresher’s, Technical skills, Soft skills & Training, Product Design & Development, Internship Opportunities and his Professional Experience.

Mr. Pradeep, final year student of M.Tech was felicitated for his excellence in project work on design and fabrication of low head turbine. Student executive committee members, Mr. Vaishak R (Vice-President) welcomed the gathering; Ms. Joelene gave an overview of the annual activities of FLAMES of previous year. Mr. Bhavik Das organized the event under the guidance of Mr. Kiran Parkasha A, Assistant Professor, and Faculty Advisor of FLAMES YR 2016-17.

Mr. S. S. Balakrishna, Vice-Principal, presided over the function. Prof. Mahesh B Davanageri, President of FLAMES & HOD of the Department, gave introductory remarks. The models of various mechanical components prepared and decorated by the students were well appreciated. The achievers were felicitated by the Chief Guest which was followed by a Cultural Programme.

Estuate Software pooled campus drive

Estuate Software Pvt. Ltd. conducted the pooled campus recruitment drive for engineering students of 2016 passed out batch at the campus. Mr. Harish Suvarna, Program Manager, Estuate Software Pvt. Ltd. was at the campus to facilitate the entire recruitment process.

Outbound Training for Second Year MBA Students

In today's corporate world, the need of the hour is for smart thinking, swift action and effective people skills - qualities that are more effectively developed in an experiential setting than through classroom training. Outbound programmes have been found to be particularly effective in areas that involve interpersonal relationships, trust and bonding, communication of shared vision and goals, motivation, behaviour modification in response to change, and personal effectiveness. With this premise in mind, Department of Business Administration organized an Outbound Training Programme for 127 students of Second year MBA at Bhagamandala, Madikeri District. Six faculty members accompanied the students for the training programme. The end outcome of the training programme was to develop skills such as group dynamics, crisis management, and leadership, knowing your team and working with the team, knowing your customer and negotiation skills. The students were divided into six teams and were allocated various activities. Team “Black” won the overall prize. There were several students who went through such training for the first time and were truly enthralled and fascinated by the experience they encountered in staying in a Dormitory in secluded environment and the obstacles one face in such situations. Mr. Venkat Ramani and his team from Varnaaz facilitated the training activities.

MBA faculties attend FDP organised by ICFAI & IBS School, Bangalore


Mr. Chandrakanth S and Ms. Prajwala Rodrigues, faculty members from the Department of Business Administration were deputed to Faculty Development Programme organised by ICFAI & IBS School, Bangalore. Prof. Geetha V Sharma was the resource person for the programme. She addressed the gathering on the Teaching Pedagogy for Management faculties and urged on use of innovative techniques in the classrooms in order to make the learning more effective.

Obituary

Sahyadri family deeply mourns the sad demise of Mr. Ahmed Raiyan, III Sem. B. E. (Mechanical Engineering) student. May his soul rest in peace and we pray that God Almighty give his family the strength to bear this loss.
