How Self-Driving cars work?

Self-driving cars must SEE and THINK while on the road, and their subsequent response should be based on the surroundings and external factors i.e., Maneuver without any impact, Gauge and introspect whether to cross the intersection on a yellow light? etc. Recent surveys highlight the fear factor amongst people and their nervousness to travel in bot-driven cars. However, in the hindsight, we need to accept the fact that Driverless cars will soon vroom on the roads. Be ready!!!
cet
SEEING (Sight and Vision of the Car)
The primary sensors that are used to know and understand the surroundings include;
• LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging):
LiDAR enables the autonomous vehicle to detect obstacles by firing off laser beams and the bounce back time of these beams to the sensor gives an accurate distance and speed of Hit to the Object measurement to the sensor.
• Cameras:
3D cameras are used to enable an autonomous vehicle to precisely recognize its own position and that of the objects around it any time in order to facilitate the accurate coordination of maneuvers.
• RADAR:
Radar uses radio waves to detect the position and speed of other objects around them. Examples include, RADAR that’s used by cops to catch over-speeding vehicles and to track aircrafts in Air traffic controllers.
• THINKING:
Artificial Intelligence is the brain of self-driving vehicles. Autonomous vehicles need to quickly interpret and respond to what they see. This can be accomplished by the use of software and algorithms. One way is through artificial neural networks, a computer system that mimics the human brain. These neural networks let self-driving cars observe, understand, respond and learn in real-time from sensor data.
Based on all these facts, the million-dollar question now is;
Would you be comfortable riding in a driverless car?

Dept. of Mechanical Engineering
