CSE Department organizes the event Aarambh’24 under CLOUDS Association

On 29th October 2024, the Department of Computer Science & Engineering hosted its esteemed branch entry event for second years, Aarambh'24. The event warmly welcomed the new batch of CSE students, providing valuable insights into industry trends, academic pathways, and cultural insights that support comprehensive growth and technical advancement.

The event was graced by the presence of

· Chief Guest- Mr. Praveen Kumar Kalbhavi, CEO of Novigo Solutions, who shared invaluable industry insights inspiring students with his experience and vision.

· Guest of Honour - Mr. Ravi Ramakunja, a versatile Comedian & Tulu Film Actor, known for his contributions to regional film industry, and Mr. Rahul Amin, a renowned Director and Actor in the Tulu film industry.

The event was further graced by Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-Research & Development bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience; Mr. Johnson Tellis, CEO of SCEM, shared his invaluable insights to students; Dr. Sudheer Shetty, Vice Principal, honored the event with his presence and Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi, the Head of the CSE Department, along with other department HODs, faculty members, students, and other notable guests.

The ceremony commenced with a traditional lamp-lighting ritual, led by the dignitaries and council members, symbolizing the official start of the event. Ms. Prapulla G, Staff Co-ordinator extended a warm welcome to the guests, setting a gracious and enthusiastic tone for the event. The Chief Guests were then honored in a special felicitation ceremony, celebrating their inspiring journeys and remarkable achievements. In addition, students with outstanding accomplishments in academics and co-curricular activities were also recognized, underscoring the department’s commitment to excellence.

Mr. Deveesh Shetty, Vice President of the Clouds Association, addressed the audience, encouraging new students to make the most of the opportunities offered by the CSE department and the Clouds Association. Members of the Cloud Association took an oath to commit to the department’s code of ethics and further goals and objectives of the organization.

Following the formal ceremony, an informal session commenced, featuring a series of dance performances by students from various classes. Additionally, second-year students participated in a class-wise variety competition, showcasing their talents across diverse categories. Aarambh ‘24-Investiture Ceremony was indeed a memorable start to the freshers’ academic journey, setting a high standard for engagement and excellence in the department.

Industry Visit by Final Year Students of CSE (AI&ML) Dept.

Dept. of CSE (AI&ML) organized an industrial visit from 24thOctober 2024 to 26th October 2024. A total of 93 students from 7th semester CSE (AI&ML) and AI&DS departmentvisited various reputed Industries at Kochi, Kerala in different sessions.

The students had an opportunity to visit UST Global, World Trade Center, Info Park-1, Kochi Kerala in two session. During the first session, Ms. Nayana from CenterManagement Team and Mr. Rithu Verma, Lead Software Developer, UST Kochi addressed the students regarding the current trends and technological growth in IT Industry. Further they gave an exploration about AI&ML Tools and technologies used in Healthcare servies they provide to their clients. Second session was handles by Mr. Asif, Delivery Manager and Ms. Neha, Software Developer, UST Kochi. They elaborated about various roles and responsibilities of software engineer. Further they explained various Internship and Job opportunities in various domains and interview process in UST. During this interactive session students could able to get information about various policies, protocols and procedures of IT company.

Tata Consultancy Services Kochi: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is an Indian multinational technology company specializing in information technology services and consulting. As of 2024, TCS is ranked seventh on the Fortune India 500 list. In September 2021, TCS recorded a market capitalization of US$200 billion, making it the first Indian IT company to achieve this valuation. It was a great experience for the students to interact with eminent personalities from TCS Kochi. During the interaction with Mr. Rajeev, The Enterprise Architect, TCS Kochi on the topic “Application of Deep Learning in Industrial Projects” he provided insights on five tribes of Machine Learning, Trinity of AI, ML Stack and different tools an AI engineer must know. Further Mr. SunishCheriyan, Head for Agile Centre of Excellence, TCS Kerala gave insights on the Elevator pitching and demonstrated the same by conducting a mock interview with few participants. The session was moderated by Ms. Ashitha Menon, Region Head,Academic Alliances(Kerala).

Sea Blue Shipyard Kochi: Sea Blue Shipyard Ltd. is an ISO 9001-2015 certified Shipyard based in Kochi established in 2003. Its the India's largest shipbuilding and maintenance facility, responsible for constructing some of the most advanced ships in the country, including defense vessels. The company integrates state-of-the-art AI and automation technologies to enhance its shipbuilding processes, improve efficiency, and reduce human error in large-scale manufacturing.

The students explored the shipyard in two sessions under the mentorship of Mr. Ashir Thankachan, Assistant Manager, HRand Mr. Vishnu, Naval Architect from Sea Blue Shipyardexplained the process involved in the construction and repair of various types of ships focusing on safety, efficiency, and quality. They also elaborated about integrating digital technologies, such as IoT and automation, to optimize shipbuilding processes and improve operational efficiencies. The participants had an opportunity to explore one of the naval vessel named Achook owned by Indian Navy.

Spinach Kochi: Spinach Kochi is leading HR Consulting Company providing services in the domain of Leadership Development, Cultural Change and Building Organizational Capability. The students had an opportunity to interact with Mrs. PK Shiby, Founder and Chief Mentor of Spinach Kochi.She conducted a session “College to Corporate” and gave insights on various leadership qualities, Time Management, tips and tricks to crack various interview rounds and so on.Finally the students explored nearby Landmarks like Kochi Hill Palace Museum, Floriculture Centre Munnar managed by Kerala Forest Development Centre, Govt. of Kerala, Echo Point, Kochi Harbour and so on. The students were accompanied by Prof. Ganaraj K, Prof. Manishchandra P G, Prof. Sandra Jeyes and Prof. Shwetha S Naik Dept. of CSE (AI&ML).

Dr Prabhu interacts with the teaching fraternity of Anjuman Educational Institutions

Dr. Ananth Prabhu G, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Principal Investigator at the Digital Forensics and Cyber Security Centre of Excellence was invited by the Anjuman Educational Institutions to deliver a lecture on High Impact Teaching For the faculty members of their various colleges.

Anjuman Educational Institutions in Bhatkal encompasses a range of colleges that cater to various fields of study, including arts, science, commerce, engineering, management, pharmacy, and teacher education. In his 3 hour interaction, Dr. Prabhu spoke about the following:

CSE Faculty Research Published in Q1 Journal Scientific Reports on Advanced Brain Tumor Diagnosis

The faculty members of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering— Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi (Professor & HOD), Mrs. Chaithrashree M (Assistant Professor), and Dr. Ananth Prabhu Gurpur (Professor)—have co-authored a research article titled "Enhancing Multiclass Brain Tumor Diagnosis Using SVM and Innovative Feature Extraction Techniques" in the prestigious Q1 Scopus-indexed journal, Scientific Reports. This paper, accessible at DOI: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-77243-7 , demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating Support Vector Machine (SVM) with advanced feature extraction and dimensionality reduction techniques for classifying four types of brain tumors using MRI images. By applying Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) for feature extraction, along with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction, the study significantly improved multiclass classification accuracy—from an SVM-alone baseline of 86.57% to 96.03% with the addition of HOG, LBP, and PCA. These findings underscore the potential of sophisticated machine learning techniques to enhance diagnostic accuracy and computational efficiency in medical imaging.
