Overview Of Physical Education
Department of Physical Education
The department strives to inculcate appropriate values and qualities required to develop sports persons and physical education professional at various levels. The Sahyadri campus is the centre for, sports, games, recreational activities, and for several competitive programmes. There is a multipurpose playground on the campus for 400mtrs Athletic track, Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Badminton, Throwball , Basketball and Handball. Modern facilities for physical conditioning are available at the Indoor Gymnasium and Outdoor Gymnasium along with facilities for Table Tennis, Chess and Carom. Sahyadri students are able to participate regularly in games and sports activities throughout the year in State and Nation level competitions.

Girls Throwball team emerged has champions at VTU level Mangalore zone Throw ball tournament & 3rd place in VTU Inter zone throw ball tournament held at SDMIT, Ujire & NIEIT, Mysore.
VTU Level Weight Lifting & Power Lifting Competition ( Men & Women)

Girls Power Lifting team emerged has champions at VTU State level Inter Collegiate Power Lifting Competition held at GAT, Bangalore from 11th to 13th November, 2016.
VTU Level Athletic Competition ( Men & Women)

Sahyadri Athletic team emerged as Over all CHAMPIONS ( with 91 points) for the 5th time at VTU level Inter Collegiate Athletic competition held at Dr. T. Thimmaiah Institute of technology, Kolar from 15th to 18th November, 2016. 127 colleges & 1520 Athletes participated from different colleges.
Our Girls team won the overall Championship in girls section with 59 points and our Boys team won the overall Championship in Boys section with 32 points.
March Past team won the 2nd place.
Manisha A. of Ist year IS won the Best Athlete award in the girls section. Vikyath V.S. 3rd sem MBA has created a New Meet Record in Discus throw by throwing 38.98 Mtrs. He has broken his own record which was created in the year 2015 by throwing 38.32 Mtrs & Our girls Relay team has created a New meet record with the timing of 54.71 sec. They have broken the record of MSRIT, Banglore which was created in the year 2013 by clocking 55.9 sec.

Our Girls Cross Country team won 1st Runners Up Trophy & Our Boys team won 2nd Runner at VTU level Inter Zone Cross Country Competition held at Kalpatharu Institute of Technology, Tiptur. Shashwath M. R. of our college won 2nd position in boys 12 kilo Mtrs. Cross Country race.

Two of our college boys participated in VTU Inter Collegiate Wrestling Competition held at MVJ College of Engineering, Bangalore. Mr. Sushanth S. Bolar 7th Sem Mech secured Second place (up to 61 kg category) and Mr. Jerin D. Varghese 7th Sem Mech secured Third place(up to 81 kg category.

Sahyadri Cross-Country team emerge the Champions for the second consecutive year

Sahyadri Boys' Cross-Country team emerged the Champions for the second consecutive year and the Girls' team won the Runners-Up trophy in VTU Cross Country competition held at KVGCE, Sullia. Fifty colleges with 195 boys and 65 girls took part in the meet. Mr. Arpith of Semester VI, Department of Mechanical Engineering won the Second Place in the Boys' section and Ms. Deepika, Semester IV, Department of Business Administration won the Third Place in the Girls' section. The Team members in the boys' sections were: Arpith, Abhishek Nayak, Rakshith Raj, Simson Rodrigues, Kiran Shahapurkar, Rakshith H.S., Midhun Jyothis, Anish, and Sannidhi Shetty. Sahyadri Boys Weight Lifting team has emerged champions in Weight Lifting, for the second consecutive year Competition held at Acharya Institute of Technology, Bangalore on 10th & 11th October 2013.The Champions won medals in the following categories:

Boys’ Badminton team emerge Champion

Sahyadri Boys’ Badminton team emerged the Champion in the VTU inter collegiate Mysore Zone Badminton Tournament held at NMAMIT, Nitte. The team defeated SJCE, Mysore, in the final (3-1). Twenty seven Engineering Colleges participated in the tournament. The team has qualified for the inter-zonal badminton tournament.

Sahyadri Boys’ Volleyball Team has emerged champion in the VTU inter Zone Volleyball Tournament held at SDM College of Engineering, Dharwad, by defeating Alva’s Institute of Technology, Moodabidri, in the finals (26-24,25-19). Eighteen qualifying teams from five zones participated in this tournament. The boys’ team emerged champions in the VTU inter-collegiate State level Cross- Country Competition held at Dr. TTIT College, KGF, Kolar. The girls’ team won the third place. History in Making

Sahyadri Girls Volleyball team emerged as Champions for the second time consecutively at the VTU Level Inter Collegiate Volleyball Tournament held at SKSVM Agadi College of Engineering, Laxmeshwar. The team defeated BGSIT Tumkur in the finals with the score of 25-13, 25-14. More than 15 Engineering Colleges participated in the tournament.
Just a week back, the same team had emerged as the champions in the State level Engineering College Volleyball Tournament organized by Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur.

Our Weight Lifting team has won the Runners-Up Trophy (Mens Section) in 12th VTU level Inter-Collegiate State-level Weight Lifting Competition out of 49 participated colleges, held at NIE, Mysore from 4th to 6th November, 2011. with 5 New VTU Meet Records in Snatch (2) , Clean & Jerk (2) & Bench Press (1). This year Sahyadri created maximum number of records at VTU Competition

Overall champions in the 15th VTU Intercollegiate Athletic Meet 2012
Sahyadri Athletic Team emerged as the overall champions in the 15th VTU Intercollegiate Athletic Meet held at SIT, Tumkur. The Athletic Meet saw 1800 athletes from various colleges competing in the Meet. This win renders Sahyadri the champions for the third consecutive year. The Men’s relay team created history with a new Meet record in the 4*400 mts. relay event. Sahyadri women’s team emerged champions in the women’s section while the men also emerged champions in their section. The Sahyadri team also bagged the first place in the March Past event for their disciplined presentation. Congratulations!.

Champions of 14th VTU Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet 2011
Day 1 of the 14th VTU inter collegiate athletic meet started with the inaugural function which was presided over by Mrs. Ashwini Nachappa. Other dignitaries from VTU and the principal of Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology were also present. It was followed by the colourful march past of 105 colleges from VTU. The meet was declared open by the chief guest.
- Our college created a new meet record in the 4x400 meters relay women with a timing of 4:47 minutes, by bettering the old record of 4:50 minutes. The team comprised of Shruthi Shetty, Jayalakshmi, Kavya Ullal, Bhavyashree.

Mithun Shetty of 1st year CS has won 3rd place in 100 Mtrs and 1st place in 4x100 Mtrs. Realy in State level Amateur Athletic meet held at Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore. He Has awarded as BEST ATHLETE in Dakshna Kannada Amateur Athletic Meet held at Mangala Stadium. He participated in the National level Amateur Athletic Meet which was held at Chennai from 10th to 13th November, 2016

The VTU Inter-Collegiate Mangalore Zone Throw ball Tournament hosted by Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management was inaugurated by the chief guest, Ms. Keerthi Nairy, the young international throw ball player. In her inaugural speech to the gathering, she said that sports and studies are both important for an individual and now it is the time for youngsters when they are young to achieve in life and that every person must have an aim in life. She wished the players good luck in the tournament. The chief guest cut the ribbon and inaugurated the court by serving the first service of the game. Eight teams from various colleges participated in the tournament. The final match was played between St. Joseph Engineering College and Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management with St. Joseph Engineering College emerging as winners in a nail-biting finish - (27-26) the first set was won by Sahyadri and St. Joseph Engineering College won the second set (20-25). The deciding set was won by St. Joseph Engineering College (13-15). Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management bagged the Runner-up trophy. Ms. Ashmitha J. Rodrigues of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore was awarded as the Best Thrower, Ms. Akshatha as Best Receiver and Ms. Anusha as Best All Rounder - both of St. Joseph Engineering College. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal distributed the prizes. Students, Ms. Marzina Natasha joint secretary welcomed the gathering and Ms. Chaitra Shetty, president of the association read the plan of action for the entire academic year. A cultural programme followed the formal inaugural programme with games and activities. Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Dr. A. P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, faculty and staff were present on the occasion.
Sahyadri hosted VTU level Inter Collegiate Inter Zonal Volley Ball tournament on 9th & 10th May, 2009 at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore. The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Vandhana Shanbhag, International level Athlete, The function started at 9 A.M. Sri Manjunath Bhandary, chairman, Bhandary foundation, Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Principal & Director, Dr. Antony A.J., Vice Principal, Dr A.J. Bhujake, Physical Director, SDM, Dharwad, and Ms. Nithisha Rodrigues, Physical director, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management were also present at the inaugural function.
Inauguration Ceremony started by invoking Gods blessings. Dr. D.L. Prabhakara, principal welcomed the gathering Physical Education Director, escorted the chief guest for the introduction of the teams. Then the Chief guest Mrs. Vandhana Shanbhag gave her inaugural address. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary gave his presidential address. Dr. A.J. Antony, Vice Principal proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by the inauguration of the tournament by the dignitaries by Cutting the Ribbon and by serving. The first match of the tournament was played between VCET, Puttur and BMSCE, Bangalore.
The function came to an end with a formal valedictory function. Winners, Runner-up, best Smasher, best Setter and best all-rounder trophies were distributed during the function.
The Chief guest for the Valedictory function was Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation Dr. D.L. Prabhakara Principal, presided over the function. The Chief Guest distributed the prizes for the winners.
Sahyadri hosted VTU level Rest of Bangalore Zone Inter Collegiate Throw Ball tournament on 20th September, 2008 at Sahyadri Grounds. Tournament was Inaugurated by Mrs. Rashmi Shetty Captain Karnataka team, ( Winners of National level Throw Ball, 1998) Manager, A.I.G. Home Finance India Ltd.

Over-all Champion ship in the girls section won by two Branches Physics Cycle & MBA & Over-all Runner-Up in the girls section won by the Civil Branch. Over-all Champion ship in the girls section won by the Computer Science & Engineering Branch & Over-all Runners Up in the girls section won by the IS Branch. Mr. Abhishek Pakare, national athlete, the Chief Guest inaugurated “Arena- 2015” the annual athletic meet of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and declared the meet open. In his inaugural address, he called on the gathering to give importance not only to academics but also to sports. He praised his sports mentor Mrs. Nitisha Rodriques, the Director of Physical Education on how she had cultivated his love for sports as his coach. He was very happy to be invited to Sahyadri as the Chief Guest and was delighted to be given the opportunity to be part of the sports Meet. A March Past by the engineering students was the highlight of the inaugural session. The first year, Section G, won the first place in the March Past. The second place was bagged by the first year Section A while the third prize went to first year Section I. The prize winners of the various events were honoured on the occasion. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Dr. A .J. Antony, Vice Principal, along with HoD's and faculty members were present on the occasion.

In his inaugural address, he stressed on the importance of sports in daily life and wished the students a bright future. A March Past by the engineering students was the highlight of the inaugural session. The first year, Section E, won the first place in the March Past. The second place was bagged by the first year Section J while the third prize went to second year of the Department of Civil Engineering. The prize winners of the various events were honoured on the occasion. Dr. A .J. Antony, Vice Principal, presented a memento to Mr. Nishith J. Shetty as a token of appreciation from the college.

Various athletic events and fun games were held for the students on the Annual Sports Day `Arena-2014’ held in the Campus. The Individual Championship was won by Mr. Arpith in the boys’ section while Ms. Nishmitha G. Kulal and Ms. Carol R. Monteiro won the Individual Championship in the girls’ section. The Over-all Championship in the boys’ section was won by the Mechanical Engineering branch and the Electronics & Communication Engineering branch won the Over-all Runners-Up Championship in the boys’ section. The Over-all Championship in the girls’ section went to the Computer Science & Engineering branch while the Over-all Runners-Up Championship in the girls’ section was won by the Physics Cycle. The Over-all Championship (Boys’ & Girls’ combined) was won by the Computer Science & Engineering branch.

“Arena 2013” the annual athletic meet of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management saw a host of winners being felicitated at the Valedictory function. Mr. Arpith won the Individual Championship in the boys’ section, while Ms. Carol Monteiro and Ms. Jayalakshmi C.S. shared the Individual Championship in the girls’ section. The Overall Championship in the boys’ section went to the Mechanical Engineering team (89 Points), and the Overall Championship in the girls’ section was won by the Electronics & Communication Engineering team (95 points). The Combined Overall Championship for both; boys and girls was bagged by the Computer Science & Information Science Engineering team (121 Points). In the Tug-of-War boys’ section, the Electronics & Communication Engineering team won the first place, the second place went to the Mechanical Engineering team, and the third place was won by the Computer Science Engineering team. The Computer Science & Information Science Engineering team bagged the first place in the Tug-of War girls’ section while the second place was won by the Electronics & Communication Engineering team, and the third place was won by the first year engineering team of the Chemistry and Physics Cycle. Various fun games were also conducted. Congratulations!
