General Rules and Regulations

Admission, Fees & Eligibility Criteria:
  • No claim from any student/parent for refund of fees under any circumstances is entertained.
  • In any special case if student wishes to discontinue the college before expiry of the course or seek transfer to any other College, the student shall pay the full fees then prescribed during the admission for the rest of years.
  • Students shall pay all outstanding dues in time of tuition /Library/ hostel, transport any other dues.
  • The College shall have the right to withhold the transfer certificate and any other certificates until the dues/outstanding are fully paid.
  • No student shall be permitted to appear for the Examination unless he/she clears all the arrears due to the College, library, transport and hostel.
  • It is essential to have Membership to Co-operative society, Book bank and Alumni association.
  • All candidates must pay the fees at the time of admission. Failure to pay the fees on or before the date(s) specified will result in the instantaneous forfeiture of the seat as well as any fees/booking fee already paid.
  • Course fees for the subsequent years must be remitted before the commencement of the academic year.
  • All certification, attestation, duplicate copies will be nominally charged.
  • The college takes all precautions to admit the student based on the eligibility certificate produced by the students. However, if the same is not found to be valid by the University or Government, It is the responsibility of the student to obtain necessary eligible certificates.
  • The college will not be held responsible for any such rejection of the application by the statutory body and students shall not have any claim for refund of fees.
  • The Management will not be held responsible for any delay in getting the admission approval and if students are not permitted to write the examination.
  • The students who have completed their semesters without backlog only will be allowed to take part in sports, cultural activities and competitions.

Code of Conduct

Attendance:
  • Attending classes regularly is an important strategy to maintain good academic progress.
  • It is mandatory requirement for all students to attend all classes on time and with appropriate class notes/laboratory observation books/laboratory records.
  • Students who come late will not be awarded attendance.
  • As per Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) regulations the student has to put in a minimum attendance of 85% in each course - theory/laboratory/seminar/project-work subject.
  • There is a provision of condonation of 10% of the attendance by the Vice-Chancellor on the specific recommendation of the Principal showing reasonable cause such as medical grounds, participation in University level sports, cultural activities, seminars, workshops, paper presentations, etc.
  • A student having shortage of attendance in one or more subjects shall have to repeat the whole semesters and such students shall not be permitted to take admission to next higher semester. Such students shall take readmission to the same semester in the subsequent academic year.
Internal Assessment Marks:
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) w. e. f. 2015-16
  • There shall be a maximum of 20 Internal Assessment (IA) Marks in each theory or practical paper.
  • The IA Marks in a theory paper shall be based on two tests generally conducted at the end of 6th and 12th week of each semester. An additional test may be conducted for the desirous students before the end of the semester to give an opportunity to such students to improve their IA Marks.
  • Average of the better marks obtained from any two tests shall be the IA Marks for the relevant subject.
  • For theory subjects, there shall not be any minimum requirement of IA marks.
  • For a pass in a theory subject/drawing, the student shall secure minimum of 35% of the maximum marks prescribed in the university examination and 40% of marks in the aggregate inclusive of the IA marks.
  • In the case of a practical, the IA Marks shall be based on the laboratory journal/reports and one practical test. A student failing to secure a minimum of 50% of the IA marks in practical/internship/project shall not be eligible for university practical/internship/project examination. For seminars, the minimum requirement of IA marks shall be 40% of the maximum.
  • For a pass in a practical/internship/project/seminar, a student shall secure a minimum of 40% of the maximum marks prescribed for the university examination.

Note: Progress report of student with attendance and IA marks details after Test-I and Test-II will be sent to parents by post. In case of non-receipt of the same, parents are requested to contact respective class teacher/HOD.

Conduct During Examinations:

Students are expected to abide by all the rules and regulations strictly as specified in the hall ticket issued by the university and as per the college guidelines. If the students are found guilty they shall not be permitted to take practical and viva examinations till appropriate authorities officially permit the student.

Identity card:
  • Wearing ID card inside the campus is mandatory.
  • Students will be issued the temporary identity cards immediately after the admission process is complete. Students should collect their temporary identity cards within a weeks' time of the commencement of college from Academic Section (SWO).
  • Students are expected to wear the identity card issued by the Institution in campus all the time and are required to produce the same when asked for by the institutional authorities. Failing which Rs. 250/ penalty will be levied and attendance will not be accounted for that day.
  • Students will be provided with permanent ID cards at the beginning of 2nd semester on surrendering the temporary ID cards. Afterwards no students are authorized to hold temporary identity cards. If anyone found wearing temporary ID cards they are liable for suitable disciplinary action and fine of Rs.500/- pre month.
  • Loss of ID card must be brought to the notice of the Student Welfare officer in writing. The duplicate/ replacement ID card will be issued on payment of prescribed fee.
  • If a student fails in the final examination and continue his/her studies beyond the period specified for the course, the student must renew the ID card by paying the required ID fee.
  • The cards must not be mutilated, defaced or rendered ineffective for identification.
  • The card must be returned at the time of Completion of course/ termination of course/ withdrawal from the institute.
  • In case of using someone else's ID card, both of them are liable for punishment.
Dress code:
  • College has introduced the dress code and all the students must follow the dress code. It is mandatory to wear uniform for 1at year students, which is provided by the college on payment. Wearing prescribed lab uniform viz: cap, mask, shoe, gloves, apron etc are compulsory. Other Students shall wear clean, neat, formal and presentable clothing.
  • Students are advised to follow the dress code while attending the colleges for lectures/ practical's / library / labs and formal function of the institution.
  • The dress should be neat, clean and pressed. In case of violation of the dress code, the concerned student will be asked to leave the academic session.
Dress Code for Boys:
  • Formal collared shirt and pants
  • Formal Jeans with Formal Shirts or Sahyadri T-shirt
  • Shoes/Sandals
Prohibited Dress for Boys:
  • Any T-shirt other than Sahyadri T-shirts
  • Torned/ Damaged Jeans/ Low Waist jeans/ Cargo Pants
  • Any type of Jeggings
  • Colouring Hair / Tattooing on any exposed body parts
  • Wearing Slippers/ Flip Flops
Prohibited Dress for Girls:
  • Tight fitting dirty jeans
  • Any T-shirt other than Sahyadri T-shirts
  • Torn trousers touching the floor, Skirts, Shorts
  • Deep necked tops/ Spaghetti tops/ Sleeveless tops
  • Leaving hair beyond the length of shoulder
  • Colouring Hair /Tattooing on any exposed body parts
  • Wearing Slippers
Smoking:

Smoking is prohibited in college/hostel campus. Parents of the students will be informed and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

Alcohol and Drug Policy:

The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students on College property or as any part of a College-sponsored activity is strictly prohibited as per the laws of the Government. Laws prohibit the unlawful use, manufacture, possession, control, sale and dispensation of any illegal narcotic or other drugs. These laws carry penalties for violations, including monetary fines and imprisonment.

Usage of Mobile phones:
  • Uses of Mobile phones are strictly banned as per AICTE/VTU Norms. Use of mobile phone in the class, laboratory and library during working hours is not allowed. If any student found using the mobile will be levied with a penalty of Rs. 500/ for the first time, Rs. 1000/ for the second time and the mobile will be confiscated and penalty of Rs. 1500/ shall be levied if found for the 3rd time.
  • Anyone possessing mobile phone during exam is ;aiable to book under mall practice case by VTU.
Fighting & Criminal Activity:

Any student involved in or encouraging the involvement of another student in fighting at college or hostel premises will be suspended. Persistent involvement will result in expulsion from the college.

Instructions to parents:

At Sahyadri Campus, our aim is to produce good professionals and we seek the co-operation of parents in achieving this goal. The infrastructure, amenities provided are of top class quality and the atmosphere is congenial for learning. Following points need to be understood by every parent:

  • Do keep in regular touch with the teacher and guardian of your son/ daughter.
  • Be aware of your son/ daughter's academic progress, especially attendance, internal assessment and marks in the university examinations.
  • Remit all the payments like tuition fees, hostel fee directly to Institutions in time.
  • Be aware of your son/ daughter's monthly expenditure and mode of expenditure.
  • We may need to contact you sometimes urgently especially in case of any accidents, casualty or emergency. Hence it is essential that any change in address, phone numbers and email be informed promptly to the college.
  • Do not encourage your son/ daughter to extend their holiday and stay at home when he/ she visit the family during vacation. He/ she may end up with attendance shortage.
  • It is advised that you visit your son/ daughter once in a way instead of the student visiting the family frequently so that his/ her studies go uninterrupted.
  • Avoid providing the student with a two wheeler or a four wheeler especially in the formative years.
  • Please keep us informed, if the student has a history of specific illness.
  • It is imperative that parents keep in regular touch with the institution officials especially in case of poor academic performers.
Public demonstration of affection:

Public demonstration of any kind of involvement is not permitted in the campus. The Security personnel/ college officials on duty are authorized to check the identity card of students who are involved in public demonstration of affection. Parents of the involved students will be informed and appropriate disciplinary action will be initiated amounting to suspension from the institution.

Strike/ Mass Bunk:

Students will not participate in any strike or demonstration and will not instigate others to do so. Mass bunking will lead to loss of three days attendance for the first time and one week loss for the succeeding attempts.

Special Safety Instructions:
  • Swimming in the back waters of Nethravathi River and in Arabian Sea is strictly prohibited. Be cautious about the tricky waters and beaches of coastal Karnataka and do not venture. College will not be held responsible for any of mishappenings in the event violating this.
  • Students are strongly discouraged to possess a two or four wheeler Speed is the cause for majority of the accidents. Students are recommended to observe the traffic rules and drive cautiously. There is only one single life!!!
  • Students riding noisy two wheelers are warned that their vehicles will be locked/ seized by the security/ police.
  • Students are expected to possess the identity card issued by the institutions at all time and are required to produce the same when asked for by the institutional authorities and District Police Authority.
  • Organizing picnics, tour or jolly rides without the consent of the college is strictly prohibited.
  • Students are recommended to eat, dine in restaurants of good repute with good hygienic standards. It is recommended that students avoid eating at unhygienic restaurants and drink safe water to avoid any water borne disease & food poisoning.
  • Do not develop any acquaintance with unknown people and accept any kind of invitation extended to win over.
  • Students are expected to register their vehicle with Transport Department/ Security.
Respect for Authority:

Students will demonstrate respect for all staff, visitors and fellow students. Students are expected to recognize and comply with the authority held by the institution and its staff. Requests made to them by staff are expected to be followed and adhered to. Failure to follow such requests could lead to parental contact, loss of privileges, suspension or expulsion.

The Institutions reserves its right to suspend and recommend to respective university the dismissal of the student under following circumstances:

  • Involvement in criminal case which brings disgrace to the image of the Institutions.
  • Involvement in case of Ragging.
  • Repeatedly violating the Code of Conduct and showing no improvement after several warnings.
  • Violating the ethics of the profession.
  • Involvement in anti-national / anti-social activities.
  • Certified by qualified professional and approved by the University that the student is mentally ill and is not fit to pursue the profession.
  • Students who do not show any improvement in academic progress despite all the support, found to be involved in substance abuse and refuse rehabilitation.
  • Involvement in Sexual Harassment
Cyber Crime:

Any activity of the student creating wilful damage to the credibility of the institute through passing of information via any media viz facebook, whatsapp etc., is liable to be dealt under cyber crime. Also instigating any group activity in the college is liable for rustication from the college.

Penalty for damages & breakages:

Students must not indulge in any act which will cause any damage/loss to the property of the College and not misuse any facilities like library, Lab etc of the College. The Management is authorized to recover the cost with penalty for the same.

College Fee

Fee Structure:

In addition to the prescribed fee in the respective category all students shall pay the college fees for various courses separately. This fee includes, Internet browsing facility, personality development trainings, soft skill programme, Industrial interaction, expert talks and other complementary facilities provided along with academics to get an edge over others and good exposure to industries. These facilities are aptly scheduled and introduced during each semester. The fee is fixed at the time of admission.

  • Book Bank fee:A unique provision of book bank facility is given to students and onetime fee is collected for the same at the time of admission.
  • ISTE fee:It is mandatory for all students to register themselves to the Indian society for technical Education and the registration charges are one time.
  • Alumni Fees:Every student is our alumni and one time alumni registration charges during the admission are applicable to all students.
  • Sahyadri Society fee:All students are the part and parcel of Sahyadri family. The Sahyadri co-op society is a system run by the students, for the students and the membership at the time of admission is mandatory to all students.
  • Bridge course (Optional):In order to match the professional learning potential, the basic engineering skills are taught by experts for 30 days (for the first semester students only) through enjoyable learning process. The students shall pay at the time of admission.
  • Uniform:The College has introduced dress code and uniform pattern to students. The actual cost of the uniform shall be borne by the students.
  • Sahyadri Kit fee:Sahyadri kit consisting of college bag, shoulder bags and other item in the kit is provided to all and the minimum cost of the same at the time of admission shall be paid by the students.
  • Transportation Fees (Optional): The institution is running its own fleet and students wanting to avail the services may book the seats in time during the admission itself and necessary transport cost shall be borne by students as per the cost every year.
Value Added courses:

To help the students in their future career and also to enhance the placement opportunity, the management has introduced value added courses. All these courses will be out sourced and the actual expenses of these courses will be borne by the students, apart from their regular academic fees in the beginning of the respective semester. These courses are compulsory to all the students.

  • As per our Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with IIIT-A, the selected students (optional) will have an opportunity to visit IIIT-Allahabad for 10-15 days to take up their project work.
Fee Remittance:

All fee payment must be through the demand draft only and it shall be in the name of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, payable at Mangalore. Demand drafts must be crossed and Payees A/C only.

Handbook:

Generally no refund of fee is permitted on account of withdrawal/absence from college or any other reasons once a student is admitted to any course.

A refund claim in writing to the management may, however, be made/ admitted on special merits. And if such request is approved by the management, the amount shall be refunded within the limits stated below:

  • The request should be Before 10 days prior to the date of commencement of classes, as per VTU schedule.
  • From the student Rs 25,000/- shall be deducted from the total fees paid.
  • Any claim for refund thereafter but within 30 days from the date of commencement of classes, 50% of the total first semester fees shall be deducted. And the refund will be only subject to the condition that all the seats so vacated are filled up.
  • After 30 days from the date of commencement of classes no refund on whatsoever reason will be considered.
  • Provisional admission or Booking amount is not refundable under any circumstances.
  • Any student who withdraws from the course after the date of commencement of the classes will be required to pay for the remaining period of the course.
  • All refunds will be processed by the Finance Office of the management, upon receiving the approval from the management/administrator based on the recommendation from the Director or Principal.
  • Requests for withdrawals should be made in the prescribed application form available at the Admission Office. Refund will be made only after the candidate has surrendered the ID card, original fee receipt and the No-dues clearance certificate from the concerned departments.

Note:The refund information given above is indicative and Management reserves the right to make any changes.

Counseling Centre

Having joined a professional course, you may face a number of situations that place several demands on you physically and psychologically. Certain times one tends to feel too stressed out. That is the time a Counselor can be of help. Talking to a Counselor would relieve your tensions and thus help you to get back to your feet again. There may be certain issues that are very personal and are interfering with your work and normal functioning. Peer group may sometimes be unable to understand them.

Being away from home into a new environment can also put you in a distressing situation at times. A Counselor can help you to feel more comfortable in your new set-up. The Counselor is the person you can turn to whenever you need to discuss some difficult situations of your life. The Centre provides total privacy to students who need guidance and counseling. All matters discussed are kept strictly confidential. Counselor is available in the office on all working days.

Department of Student welfare:

  • The department of student welfares is set up to look after the welfare of students. With about 3000 students studying in the Campus, it is imperative to have such a support group to look after the students' interests outside the classroom and provide special services.
  • The Student welfare department's services cover wide areas such as guidance, well being, health and counseling. It is constantly evolving ways to support and foster students' interest in the campus. A number of activities are held every year to ensure that the growth of students is not limited to classrooms alone.
  • Our idea is to help students reach their highest potential in the areas of intellectual curiosity and personal well-being. We are committed in providing students a wide variety of opportunities to explore leadership styles along with scope for cultivating and practicing new skills.

TIPS to Students

  • To become a good professional, the student should be very clear in his/her ambition and set appropriate goals for themselves.
  • The priorities for the day should be clear in the mind.
  • Proper time management is very essential (with proper time management a student can easily have 3 hours of relaxation and read for 5 hours per day).
  • Mind and body should be kept active and balanced. Priorities and ambition may be forgotten if relaxation (though important) is overdone.
  • Inmates of the hostel are expected to abide by the hostel rules and regulations.
  • Talented students in the field of sports and cultural activities should intensify the talent in the respective fields. Such students are expected to be the active members of sports and cultural committee of the college. Good hobbies should not be forgotten.
  • Students are expected to observe the dress code of the Institution.
  • Indiscipline will be dealt with as per rules and the nature of punishment can vary from suspension to dismissal from the institute.
  • In case of ill health students should keep the concerned officials/parents informed and it is always better that one of the parent is present.
  • In case of stressful situations students can contact Student Counselor.

Ragging

Ragging is a criminal offence as per Karnataka Educational Act 1983 and Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. Ragging means over riding one's human respect in any manner through words, deeds or looks. Ragging within or outside the educational institution or at hostel or during travel is prohibited. The photo of the students indulged in ragging will be displayed on college notice board and immediately terminate from college. Students will not indulge or resort in any form of anti-social and unlawful activities including 'Ragging' or any kind of misbehavior or harassment-physical or otherwise to any co-student.

Whoever directly or indirectly commits, participates in, abets or instigates ragging inside or outside the educational institution shall be suspended, expelled or rusticated from the institution and shall also be liable to fine up to Rs. 2.5 lakhs. The punishment includes rigorous imprisonment, cancellation of admission, suspension from attending classes, withholding/ withdrawing fellowship/scholarship and other financial benefits, withholding or cancelling the results.

No Leniency will be shown to the offenders or any warning will be given to those involved in ragging. All students are requested to note and co-operate in keeping our campus and its constituent colleges free from ragging.

Note:
  • Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management ensures strict compliance on the prevention of Ragging of any form.
  • Harassment in any form, whether written, verbal, sexual (including homosexuality and pornography), physical, emotional or racial, is a serious offence and the offender will be treated very seriously.
  • No student will participate in or initiate any form of bullying, intimidation or swarming. Persistent disregard would result in suspensions, expulsions, and/or criminal charges.
  • Such behavior shall be punishable under law.

Special Instructions

  • Students are warned against possible cheating by unscrupulous agencies that may put out misleading advertisements in newspapers or approach by other means, promising and assuring seats for various courses for monetary considerations or by extracting large sum of money from candidates / parents. The management wishes to authoritatively refute all such misleading false claims and advertisements.
  • The seats for all the courses offered by Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management can be secured only by CET/Comed-K and Management quota.
  • The website provides guidelines and information about the courses and institutions. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of content at the time of updating, Management reserves the right to amend or alter information without notice. No liability can be accepted by the Institution in connection with any such alterations or amendments.
  • Management reserves the right to change the rules relating to admissions, fee structure, refunds, scholarships etc. The amendments, if any will be notified in the website. All differences and disputes arising in the interpretation and implementation of the sections in this prospectus will be referred to the Director and his decision shall be final and binding.
