Faculty of Mechanical Engineering receives Funding under TEQIP Programme from VTU Belagavi

Prof. Ajith B S, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering has been selected by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) to receive Rs. 2 Lakhs worth “Competitive Research Grant” for the project titled "Optimization of High Yield Biodiesel Production from Fish Oil using Nano-catalyst and Performance Evaluation in Diesel Engine". The Project is being supervised by Dr. Manjappa S, Director-Research & Development.

The objective of the proposed project is to use suitable Nano Catalyst to improve the biodiesel yield and investing fuel properties of methyl ester and also to study the performance, combustion and emission characteristic of single cylinder four stroke diesel engine fueled with methyl esters and their blends with conventional diesel oil at varying operational conditions like load, injection pressure and injection timing.

The extracted biodiesel will replace 10 to 15% of conventional diesel oil, thereby reduces the dependency on fossil fuels. Thereby, energy independency and energy security can be obtained for local industries, transport vehicles and in diesel engine operated Generator pump sets etc. By-product of esterification and biodiesel extraction process are glycerin and alkyds-rich water. Both have commercial value in the market due to their application in soap and detergent industries.

Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of Government of India (TEQIP) is being implemented as a World Bank assisted project to improve the quality of technical education system in the country.
