Students' Talent Contest and Exhibition of Science Models during SSTH 2019

The Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH 2019), a mega event, held on 16th Nov’19 attracted a host of PUC and High School students. It conducted workshops for students in 200 schools on community-based issues and design thinking, with more than 350 science models from over 1200 students. Out of these, 40 have been chosen to turn start-ups into products.
Young students showed their prowess at this scientific event and showcased their scientific ideas and models of science. They explained their projects to judges.
Several questions like:
• Do fish have the ability to experience electric shocks?
• Is it possible to cut down transmission loss during supply of electricity by embracing wireless technology?
• Is it possible to raise crop on a planet similar to earth?
And many more complex questions were answered by the young budding scientists.
Students from Bantwal showcased their project on fish and technology. This project proved that fishes indeed do experience pain subjected to electric shock. “A minor shock does not cause any lifetime harm, it just jolts you. The same goes for fishes too”
Students from Moodbidri through their project, convinced the visitors that transmission of power through Wireless Technology was indeed environment-friendly.
Similarly, another team from Kundapur had developed an integrated solar-powered agricultural robot, keeping the future in mind. The robot could sow seeds, replant paddy saplings and harvest the crop. The robot could also be used as ‘Rover’ to test whether crops can be raised in other planets.
Many models inspired by Pacchanady landfill disaster, focused on effective ways of waste segregation. The students came up with smart answers and replied confidently to all questions asked, to the utter amazement and disbelief of the non-participant observers.
As many as 40 projects of the total 350 that were showcased in the SSTH, including fishing model, were adjudged as winners under different categories.
The teams who showcased their projects were many, but just a few are mentioned here. Yet all deserved an equally well lauded applause for their innovation. The projects showcased are more of social innovation problem solving projects. Overall, the guests including by Mr Prashanth Prakash, Co-founder, Erasmic, and Founding Partner, Accel India, applauded the efforts of the teams and appreciated the chairman for initiating students’ talents from rural section.
SSTH-2019 is offering new ideas to the younger generation. It motivates scientific activities, and enables critical examination of scientific questions from a different perspective.
