‘Arena-2020’ the Annual Sports Day event took off on 21st Feb’2020 at the Sahyadri Grounds. The Chief Guest was Ms. Shruthi Shetty, National Athlete.
The event started with the March Past. The students in spectacular colours took part in large numbers with a spirit of sportsmanship, representing the unity and discipline of Sahyadri. Ms. Manisha, Sports Secretary introduced the March Past teams to the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest then hoisted the Flag that signifies the dignity & integrity of athletes and unites all as a team.
Light is a reflection of Power, Zeal and Intensity and ignites the spirit of sportsmanship. The Torch Bearing ceremony was led by the most zealous Mohammed Zaheer, student of Mechanical Engineering. Later, the Chief Guest raised the Torch, bearing the light. Mr. Harshith V., student of Mechanical Engineering, led the team through the oath. Moving on, the VTU Blues – Students who represented VTU in All India Level were honoured.
Ms Shruthi is an Alumna from the Dept. of Civil Engineering. She is currently working as Senior Executive Business Development in Turner Project Management India Pvt. Ltd. She represented Karnataka in National School Games during her school days. She has represented VTU at All India Inter University Athletic competitions held at Andhra Pradesh & Punjab universities. Her current involvement in sports is training for 10K Run & 21K Half Marathon.
In her inaugural speech Ms Shruthi said that she was very grateful to Sahyadri for moulding her into a person that she is today. Sahyadri has always given her an opportunity to explore her potential, she stated.
Speaking about the importance of sports in our life, she said it does not merely make us physically fit and active but also contributes towards the mental growth and development. It gives a student a chance to enhance the physical and the social skills.
She ruefully stated that once students leave the college portals and start working they find themselves in a situation where they cannot manage time. They often complain about time restraint, she exclaimed. She advised the students to be focused and try to strike a balance between the academics and extra-curricular activities. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Mr. Balakrishna S S, Vice-Principal; Mr. Devdas Hegde, Trustee; Mr. Sadananda H S, Director of Sports; were also present.
