State Level Workshop on Cancer Awareness

National Cancer Awareness Day is observed on the birth anniversary of Madame Curie, a prominent scientist remembered for her efforts and contribution in the battle against cancer. February 4 is World Cancer Day, a day that touches many of us who have either had the disease or know someone who has fought the tough battle against it.
Keeping this in mind, "Indian red cross society" collaborated with Sahyadri along with Yenapoya deemed university, Mangalore University and NITTE (deemed university) celebrated their Centenary year by organizing a "State level one day workshop on cancer awareness" on 3rd March in Sahyadri Campus.
The workshop on cancer awareness was graced by many dignitaries and delegates fom 12 universities from all over Karntaka. It was presided by honorable Principal Dr. Rajesha S and was inaugurated by Shri. C A Shantharam Shetty, Chairman of the Indian Red cross society. The program was also graced by many guests like

  • Major, Dr. Shivakumar Hiremath
  • {Medical superintendent, Justice K.S Hegede, charitable Hospital, Derlakatte, NITTE University (deemed to be)}.
  • Shri. Devadas Hegde, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation.
  • Shri Kusumadhar BK, Hon. Secretory, IRCS, D.K Dist
  • Dr. Ganapathy Gowda, YRC Nodal officer, Mangalore University.
  • Mrs. Nithyyashree B V, YRC Nodal officer, Yenepoya University (Deemed to be).
  • Mrs. Latha S, YRC Nodal officer, NITTE University (Deemed to be).
  • Mrs. Shreelatha U A, YRC Program officer, Sahyadri college of ENG.& MGMT.
  • Mr. Raviindranath, MC member IRC D.K. Dist.
  • Mr. Sacheth Suvarna, Director YRC/ JRCsub committees IRC, D.K.
  • The program began with a special Stage performance by Shri. Sheena Nadoli, Folklore and Ninasam Artist and lecturer, Government junior college Belthangady. Further, the day of workshop was enriched by Dr. Jalauddin Akbar K C (Professor and HOD Department of surgical Oncology) Yenepoya Medical College & hospital. He basically spoke about "Cancer in general" followed by Testimony by a Cancer survivor and Care Taker. Dr. Umme Amarah, Asst. Professor, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Yenepoya Dental College spoke on "Oral Cancer" and Ms. Khaini Cicilia research scholar from NITTE University spoke on "Breast Cancer".
    In the next half of the session Dr. Neetha Kamath, Associate Professor, NITTE Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences spoke on "Cervical and ovarian cancer", Mr. Gireesh G R, Associate Professor, Yenepoya Nursing College spoke on "Behavioral and lifestyle changes for prevention of cancer" and in the last session Dr Leena K C Dean/Principal Yenepoya, Nursing College gave an insight on "Reaching community through Youth Program officers/ Volunteers".
    In the end, the program was concluded by a graceful ceremony honoured by Dr.Rajesh S Principal and Shri Jagannath Chowta, Trustee.
